Screening of Type 2 Diabetes in the City of Belo Horizonte: Differences between Genders

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a major public health problem that carries a high social and economic burden. Its diagnosis is unknown in half of individuals who have the disease. The diagnosis of the risk factors should be done in the beginning, since changes in lifestyle and hyperglycemic correction may delay the appearance of the disease and its complications. In this context, screening has been considered an important tool for an early detection of diabetes in asymptomatic adults. Objective: The objective is to track diabetes in people from BH, comparing genders. Patients and methods: People were interviewed with questions concerning the risk factors associated with the development of diabetes. According to the risk factors present, they were classified as non-diabetic [ND], pre-diabetic [PD] or diabetic [DM]. Statistical analyses were performed considering p ≤ 0.05 as significant. Results: 1264 individuals participated (5.5% DM, 6.5% PD, 88.0% ND). When grouped, PD and DM males were more prevalent than PD and DM females. Those in the DM group had higher blood pressure, age, glycaemia, number of past smokers, first-degree relatives with diabetes than either PD or ND. Both males and females in DM and PD groups had a higher waist circumference than did either ND males or females. ND men had a higher intake of fried food and smoked more in the past than ND women. Both ND and PD males had higher blood pressure than women from the same groups. Conclusion: Screening for diabetes is very important for an early diagnosis and to avoid future complications in patients. It’s possible to infer that women are more conscientious when it comes to taking care of themselves than men.

On the Misunderstanding of the Ziegler-Nichols's Formulae Usage

In the Ziegler-Nichols' s method of reaction curve,the proportional gain should be calculated as an inverse relation of the plant steady-state gain. One of the reasons behind this is to avoid an excessively high loop gain, which can jeopardize many required characteristics of the closed loop. However, many reports, scientific papers and books have been neglecting such gain compensation in the tuning *** brief presents a comprehensive discussion about such uncompensated tuning rules. The main paper finding is that either the stability margin or the disturbance rejection is reduced in this case. A theoretical analysis is performed to obtain the main result. Moreover, a consistent simulation study is also performed to show the impact of the lack of compensation on performance.

MULTIGRID METHOD FOR A MODIFIED CURVATURE DRIVEN DIFFUSION MODEL FOR IMAGE INPAINTING

Digital inpainting is a fundamental problem in image processing and many variational models for this problem have appeared recently in the literature. Among them are the very successfully Total Variation （TV） model [11] designed for local inpainting and its improved version for large scale inpainting： the Curvature-Driven Diffusion （CDD） model [10]. For the above two models, their associated Euler Lagrange equations are highly nonlinear partial differential equations. For the TV model there exists a relatively fast and easy to implement fixed point method, so adapting the multigrid method of [24] to here is immediate. For the CDD model however, so far only the well known but usually very slow explicit time marching method has been reported and we explain why the implementation of a fixed point method for the CDD model is not straightforward. Consequently the multigrid method as in [Savage and Chen, Int. J. Comput. Math., 82 （2005）, pp. 1001-1015] will not work here. This fact represents a strong limitation to the range of applications of this model since usually fast solutions are expected. In this paper, we introduce a modification designed to enable a fixed point method to work and to preserve the features of the original CDD model. As a result, a fast and efficient multigrid method is developed for the modified model. Numerical experiments are presented to show the very good performance of the fast algorithm.

Diuretic window hypothesis in cirrhosis: Changing the point of view

Since the 1970s,non-selective beta-blockers(NSBB)have been used to prevent variceal upper bleeding in advanced cirrhotic ***,several recent studies have raised the doubt about the benefit of NSBB in end-stage cirrhotic *** fact,they suggested a detrimental effect in these patients that even reduced *** of these studies have been assembled to compose the“window therapy hypothesis”,in which NSBB would have traditional indication to be initiated to prevent variceal upper bleeding;however,treatment should be stopped(or not be initiated)in patients with end-stage *** would reduce the cardiac reserve of these patients,worsening systemic perfusion and ***,it should be emphasized that these studies present important bias issues,and their results also suggested that diuretic treatment may also be behind the effects *** this opinion review,we changed the point of view from NSBB to diuretic treatment,based on a physiopathogenic approach of circulatory parameters of cirrhotic patients studied,and based on diuretic effect in blood pressure lowering and in other hypervolemic disease,as heart *** suggest a“diuretic window hypothesis”,composed by an open window in hypervolemic phase,an attention window when patient present in a normal plasma volume phase,and a closed window during the plasma hypovolemic phase.

The relationships between selected soil properties and caesium-137 identify organic carbon,nitrogen and water soluble phenols as indicators of soil erosion processes in different forest stands

In the last few decades,the use of environmental radionuclides,particularly caesium-137(^(137)Cs),represented one of the most valid methods for estimating soil ***,the cost associated with the use of the equipment needed for radiometric analyses is still high and,for this reason,finding more easily measurable indicators can be *** is a strong correlation between^(137)Cs,organic carbon(OC),nitrogen(N)and water soluble phenols(WSP)exists,indicating the latter parameters as possible early indicators of soil *** on the above assumptions,the main purpose of this work is to identify specific soil chemical parameters able to indicate early triggering of soil ***,several soil parameters such as pH,electric conductivity(EC),WSP,OC,N and C/N have been evaluated against^(137)Cs and on a comparative *** addition,since the rate of soil erosion depends on the degree of coverage and canopy structure,two different tree species(Pinus nigra laricio *** Fagus sylvatica L.)have been considered in this contribution in which ten different scenarios of forest management have been *** results show that the reduction in tree cover of managed sites triggers erosion and nutrient loss *** has been observed that the loss of^(137)Cs,compared to the control areas,is closely correlated with those of WSP,OC and *** parameters(WSP,OC and N),more easily assessable,can be a valid tool to understand easily,triggering of erosive phenomena.

Fluidized and vibrofluidized shallow beds of fresh leaves

The fluid dynamics behavior of shallow fluidized and vibrofluidized beds operating with fresh leaves was investigated with the aim of exploring drying applications in a modified conveyor belt （MCB） system, which may be operated in a fixed- or fluidized-bed mode. Leaves of the specimens Duranta repens, Schinus molle, Coleus barbatus, Buxus sempervirens, and Bougainvillea spectabilis were tested with a range of sphericities from 0.063 to 0.213, bulk densities from 0.038 to 0.251 g/cm3, apparent densities from 0.52 to 0.97 g/cm3 and ratios of total surface area to volume from 21 to 224 cm-1. Fluidization characteristic curves were obtained by measuring pressure drops versus air velocity in a rectangular column of 0.20 m - 0.11 m cross section. It was not possible to reach real fluidized regimes with the leaves due to strongly non-homogeneous beds. Nevertheless, the characteristic curves allowed for the identification of a transition regime from fixed- to expanded-beds, and parameters such as air velocity and pressure drop obtained from the experimental data at the transition were reproducible for specimens with lower surface area or lower specific gravity （i.e., Duranta repens, Schinus molle, and Bougainvillea spectabilis）. The transition velocity and pressure drop could not be predicted by the literature developed for estimat- ing minimum fluidization conditions. The use of vibration at dimensionless vibration parameters （Γ） of 0.5 and 1.0 helped to reduce channeling and decrease the transition velocities from fixed to expanded regimes although it did not affect the pressure drops after the bed expansion. The results suggest that drying fresh leaves using the MCB dryer operating in a fluidized mode would not be feasible because none of the materials investigated attained a high-quality fluidization. Intelligent geospatial maritime risk analytics using the Discrete Global Grid System

Each year,accidents involving ships result in significant loss of life,environmental pollution and economic *** promotion of navigation safety through risk reduction requires methods to assess the spatial distribution of the relative likelihood of ***,such methods necessitate the integration of large volumes of heterogenous datasets which are not well suited to traditional data *** paper proposes the use of the Discrete Global Grid System(DGGS)as an efficient and advantageous structure to integrate vessel traffic,metocean,bathymetric,infrastructure and other relevant maritime datasets to predict the occurrence of ship *** and heterogenous datasets are well suited for machine learning algorithms and this paper develops a spatial maritime risk model based on a DGGS utilising such an approach.A Random Forest algorithm is developed to predict the frequency and spatial distribution of groundings while achieving an R2 of 0.55 and a mean squared error of *** resulting risk maps are useful for decision-makers in planning the allocation of mitigation measures,targeted to regions with the highest *** work is identified to expand the applications and insights which could be achieved through establishing a DGGS as a global maritime spatial data structure.

Assessment of deforestation impact on soil erosion in loess formation using 137Cs method (case study: Golestan Province, Iran)

Golestan,a province in the North-East of Iran,is characterized by high coverage of loess *** 1963,the area has experienced approximately 200,000 ha deforestation due to land-use changes in agriculture and increasing demand for ***,110,000 ha of the clear-cut lands are under dry-farming,mainly for wheat cropping,and about 86,000 ha have been *** IAEA funded project is the first attempt to use nuclear techniques in the East of Hircanian Forest for determination of on-site impacts of deforestation due to two land-use changes(*** farming and reforestation).Practicing long-term dry-farming led to 60%soil losses with a mean rate of 2 mm per *** net erosion rate of croplands on loess deposits in the study area was 32.27 t ha-1 ***,cultivation of even-aged Cypress trees since 1993,showed 13 to 60 percent effectiveness in soil ***-farming land use resulted in the loss of 95 t ha-1 soil organic carbon(SOC)stock at a mean rate of 1.7 t ha-1 over 54 *** Cypress trees successfully restored the SOC content by 100%compared with the SOC in original *** conversion of dry-farming lands to orchards of olive trees since 2004,brought more income for farmers but were less effective in soil conservation because of low canopy cover of olive *** data provide key information and guidance for land users and decisionmakers about implementing strategic and sustainable conservation practices to restore degraded land.
