Distribution and fate of DCX/PSA-NCAM expressing cells in the adult mammalian cortex： A local reservoir for adult cortical neuroplasticity？

Abstract The expression of early developmental markers such as doublecortin （DCX） and the polysialylated-neural cell adhesion molecule （PSA-NCAMIp has been used to identify immature neurons within canonical neurogenic niches. Additionally, DCX/PSA-NCAM ＋ immature neurons reside in cortical layer II of the paleocortex and in the paleo- and entorhinal cortex of mice and rats, respectively. These cells are also found in the neocortex of guinea pigs, rabbits, some afrotherian mammals, cats, dogs, non-human primates, and humans. The population of cortical DCX/PSA-NCAM ＋ immature neurons is generated prenatally as conclusively demonstrated in mice, rats, and guinea pigs. Thus, the majority of these cells do not appear to be the product of adult proliferative events. The immature neurons in cortical layer II are most abundant in the corlLices of young individuals, while very few DCX/PSA-NCAM ＋ cortical neurons can be detected in aged mammals. Maturation of DCX/PSA-NCAM ＋ cells into glutamatergic and GABAergic neurons has been proposed as an explanation for the age-dependent reduction in their population over time. In this review, we compile the recent information regarding the age-related decrease in the number of cortical DCX/PSA-NCAM ＋ neurons. We compare the distribution and fates of DCX/PSA-NCAM ＋ neurons among mammalian species and speculate their impact on cognitive function. To respond to the diversity of adult neurogenesis research produced over the last number of decades, we close this review by discussing the use and precision of the term ＂adult non-canonical neurogenesis.＂

Identification of heat-induced proteomes in meiotic pollen mother cells of tomato'Maxifort'using single-cell-type tandem mass tag(TMT)proteomics

Heat stress(HS)poses a significant challenge to tomato production due to disruption of the reproductive organs,especially the male *** study reports HS-induced proteome changes in meiotic pollen mother cells during early stages of anther ***(Solanum lycopersicum L.×***)'Maxifort'were grown in a heated polytunnel in Nashville,Tennessee,*** at flowering stage were subjected to heat treatment at 40±2℃ for 4 hr(11:00−15:00 HR);and the non-heat-treated control was at 30±2℃(day/night)at the same period of time for 10 *** size of the flower buds containing meiotic pollen mother cells was determined based on the histology of DAPI stained cross section of *** buds were embedded in optimal cutting temperature solutions(oCT)and then cut into sections of 20μm *** containing meiotic pollen mother cells were collected using laser capture microdissection(LCM).A protein extraction procedure was optimized for the LCM collected pollen samples which yielded 25−30μg protein from 150,000−200,000 pollen *** heatinduced proteomes of meiotic pollen mother cells were quantified using tandem mass tag(TMT)quantitative proteomics *** the 6,343 quantified proteins,254 differentially expressed proteins(DEPs)showed significant differences in abundance level from heat treated to non-heat-treated control *** heat-up-regulated-DEPs(96 proteins)include heat shock proteins,calreticulin and exocytosis(synaptobrevin)which are involved in protein folding/refolding/targeting/removal and secretion of aggregated and damaged proteins/*** heat-down-regulated-DEPs(158 proteins)were involved in pathways of ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation,antioxidant mechanism,and metabolic processes of carbohydrates and *** affecting apoptotic programmed cell death and pollen mother cell meiotic activity were significantly changed under *** identified proteins and the affected biological processe

ANALYSIS oN PECULIARITIES oF "92.8"FLooD EVENTIN THE LoWER YELLoW RIVER

From 7~th through 13~th, August, 1992, a series of heavy rainstorms took place in Shaanxi province. The rainfall moved from the north to the south in sequence, resulting in flood events in tributaries of the Middle Yelow River, such as Huangfuchuan, Kuye, Wuding, Yanhe, Beiluo, Jinhe and Weihe rivers. These floods, converged from various tributaries, propagated downstream and formed four continuing flood crests at Huayuankou Hydrometric Station in the Lower Yellow River with a max. peak discharge of 6260m3/s, which is referred as "92.8" flood. Although the peak discharge of 6260m3/s is a frequent one for the Lower Yelow Rived, the water stage reached 94.33m, the second record of the station, even 0.34m higher than that in 1982 when the peak discharge was 15300 m3/s. The "92.8" flood brought about a lot of damages, including inundation of 40000 ha of farmland on the floodplain of the Lower Yellow Rived The extremely high water stage, occurred in Huayuankou Hydrometric Station was caused directly by the previous deposition in main channel and unfavorable combination of incoming flow and sediment regime. But the primary cause is the change in incoming runoff and sediment load in the Lower Yellow River. Since the middle of 1980's remarkable reduction has taken place both in runoff and sediment load, and to some extent becomes definitely a tendency in furture. As some unforeseen troubles in flood control in Lower Yellow River might occur, more attention should be paid for it.

ASPECTS oF FATIGUE CRACK GRoWTH IN INTERMET ALLICALLoYS

The mechanisms of fatigue crack propagation in intermetallics alloys, specifically γ TiAl, Nb 3Al and MoSi 2, were compared with corresponding behavior in brittle ceramics and ductile metals. This was achieved by considering the process of fatigue crack growth as a mutual competition between intrinsic mechanisms of crack advance ahead of the crack tip (e.g., alternating crack tip blunting and resharpening), which promote crack growth, and extrinsic mechanisms of crack tip shielding behind the tip (crack closure and bridging), which impede it. The differing nature of these mechanisms in brittle and ductile materials and their specific dependence upon the alternating and maximum driving forces (e.g., Δ K and K max ) provided a useful distinction of the process of fatigue crack propagation in these different classes of materials.

A Decade of Jadelle Subdermal Implant Contraception in a Tertiary Health Institution in Port Harcourt, Southern Nigeria

Background: Jadelle, a long acting reversible progesterone contraceptive, has been in use in our centre for over 10 years and has not been comprehensively evaluated. objectives: To determine the acceptance, efficacy, and safety profile associated with the use of Jadelle contraceptive implant in the University of Port Harcourt Teaching hospital, Port Harcourt. Methods: This is a 10-year retrospective study of clients who accepted and used Jadelle for contraception in the university of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Port Harcourt. The case files were retrieved and information on their socio demographic profile, source of information, side effects, failures and reason for removal were extracted using a proforma. Data were filled into a spread sheet, analyzed using SPSS version 21.0 and presented in tables of frequencies and percentages. Results: Within the period under review, March 2007 to February 2017, 569 clients used Jadelle out of the 3829 women who accepted and used modern contraceptive in the UPTH. The mean age of users was 33.7 ± 4.2, 536 (94.2%) were multipara with a mean parity of 4.5 ± 3.8 while 541 (95.1%) had secondary education and above. The major side effect was irregular vaginal bleeding 36 (60.9%) while the main reason for removal of the device was expiration of method 272 (53.9%). A pregnancy was recorded during this period giving a pearl index of 0.002. Conclusion: Jadelle is a popular and a very effective means of contraception with increasing acceptance among our clients. The safety profile is high.

Numerical Investigation of Turbulent Flow through Rectangular and Biconvex Shaped Trash Racks

Turbulent flow through a trash rack of bars of rectangular and biconvex shapes is considered. A trash rack is composed of an array of bars fitted into a hydro-electric power station to prevent debris and fish to enter the waterway towards the turbine. The work is directed towards modeling a large number of bars for which the flow turn out to have a periodic structure. It is here shown that this case can be simplified with the flow past a single bar together with periodic boundary conditions. Using this approach the head loss is derived for different angles of attack α and blockages P for two shapes of the rack, a rectangular bar and an aerodynamically shaped biconvex bar. It is found that overall loss of the biconvex bars is in general about 15% of the loss for the rectangular case for small angles of attack. For large angle of attack this difference diminishes. of interest for the biconvex bars is also a local minimum in the head loss for angles approximately greater than 20°and for a blockage P around 0.35. This combination of parameters gives a low loss together with an efficient barrier for debris and fishes.
