Genotyping-by-sequencing of Brassica oleracea vegetables reveals unique phylogenetic patterns, population structure and domestication footprints

Brassica oleracea forms a diverse and economically significant crop *** efforts are often hindered by limited knowledge of diversity contained within available ***,we employ genotyping-by-sequencing to investigate a diverse panel of 85 landrace and improved *** broccoli,cauliflower,and Chinese kale ***,21,680 high-quality SNPs were used to reveal a complex and admixed population structure and clarify phylogenetic relationships among *** *** broccoli landrace contained,on average,8.4 times as many unique alleles as an improved broccoli and landraces collectively represented 81%of all broccoli-specific *** broccoli hybrids were largely represented by a single subpopulation identified within a complex population *** allelic diversity in landrace broccoli and 96.1%of SNPs differentiating improved cauliflower from landrace cauliflower were common to the larger pool of broccoli germplasm,supporting a parallel or later development of cauliflower due to introgression events from *** kale was readily distinguished by principal coordinate *** was accomplished with and without reliance upon a reference genome producing 141,317 and 20,815 filtered SNPs,respectively,supporting robust SNP discovery methods in neglected or unimproved crop groups that lack a reference *** work clarifies the population structure,phylogeny,and domestication footprints of landrace and improved *** broccoli using many genotyping-by-sequencing ***,a large pool of genetic diversity contained in broccoli landraces is described which may enhance future breeding efforts.

From filaments to function: The role of the plant actin cytoskeleton in pathogen perception,signaling and immunity

The eukaryotic actin cytoskeleton is required for numerous cellular processes, including cell shape, development and movement, gene expression and signal transduction, and response to biotic and abiotic stress. In recent years,research in both plants and animal systems have described a function for actin as the ideal surveillance platform, linking the function and activity of primary physiological processes to the immune system. In this review, we will highlight recent advances that have defined the regulation and breadth of function of the actin cytoskeleton as a network required for defense signaling following pathogen infection. Coupled with an overview of recent work demonstrating specific targeting of the plant actin cytoskeleton by a diversity of pathogens,including bacteria, fungi and viruses, we will highlight the importance of actin as a key signaling hub in plants, one that mediates surveillance of cellular homeostasis and the activation of specific signaling responses following pathogen perception. B4 ased on the studies highlighted herein, we propose a working model that posits changes in actin filament organization is in and of itself a highly specific signal, which induces, regulates and physically directs stimulus-specific signaling processes, most importantly, those associated with response to pathogens.

The“Dragging Foot”of Jose Garcia Villa’s Performative“Comma Poems”

Jose Garcia Villa’s "comma poem,"in which he introduces“a new,special and poetic use”for the comma,is arguably the poet's most contentious *** from an appropriation of Leonard Caspar’s description of the comma poems as "demonstrably malfunctional as a dragging foot,"this essay argues that the comma poem was a visual performance whereby Villa dis-oriented and de-naturalized poetic“flows”through a quccr/crip aesthetic of hesitation and *** as footsteps and/or footnotes,the comma’s minor mark interrupts and dis-ablcs normative flow,forcing the reader to adopt a nonnormative“gait.”Utilizing Sara Ahmed’s phenomenological theory of "queer orientation,"I examine how the comma poems’specific incongruity extends beyond modem grammars:anticipating readings of his“foreignness”and"insensitivity"to the English *** performs the essentiality of the“minor mark”through linguistic *** doing so,he queers not only the“direction”of modem poetry and its canonicity,but also a contemporary politics of recuperation.

Understanding Plant Development and Stress Responses through Integrative Approaches

As the name reflects, integrative plant biology is the core topic of JIPB. In the past few years JIPB has been pursuing the development of this area, to assist the scientific community to bring together all possible research tools to understand plant growth, development and stress responses in micro- and macro-scales. As part of these efforts, JIPB and Yantai University organized the 1st International Symposium on Integrative Plant Biology in the seaside town of Yantai during August 10-12, 2009 （Figure 1） The symposium was co-sponsored by Botanical Society of China, Chinese Society for Cell Biology, Genetics Society of China, and Chinese Society for Plant Physiology.

Take only pictures, leave only...fear？ The effects of photography on the West Indian anole Anolis cristatellus

Ecotourism encourages an environmentally friendly exploration of the world＇s natural habitats. Tourists often engage in wildlife photography, an activity that is generally not considered disturbing to animals. We investigated the effects of cam- era-related stimuli to determine whether shutter noise and/or flash affected the immediate behavior of female crested anoles Ano- lis cristaellus. Anoles decreased their display rate following stimuli that included shutter noises, but did not change their behavior in response to flash or silence treatments. To determine the relative importance of this response, we observed anole behavior fol- lowing playbacks of calls from kestrels Falco sparverius, a predator, and bananaquits Coereba flaveola, a non-predator. Anoles decreased display rates following kestrel calls when compared to their response to bananaquit calls. Furthermore, anoles spent a greater proportion of time displaying following bananaquit calls compared to both kestrel calls and silence. The magnitude of response to shutter noises was about the same as that to predator calls. This demonstrates that photography may not be as benign as commonly believed, and we should consider whether restrictions on camera noises should be implemented to reduce ani- mal disturbance

Semi-Markov adaptive critic heuristics with application to airline revenue management

The adaptive critic heuristic has been a popular algorithm in reinforcement learning(RL) and approximate dynamic programming(ADP) *** is one of the ?rst RL and ADP *** and ADP algorithms are particularly useful for solving Markov decision processes(MDPs) that suffer from the curses of dimensionality and *** real-world problems,however,tend to be semi-Markov decision processes(SMDPs) in which the time spent in each transition of the underlying Markov chains is itself a random *** for the average reward case,unlike the discounted reward case,the MDP does not have an easy extension to the *** of SMDPs can be found in the area of supply chain management,maintenance management,and airline revenue *** this paper,we propose an adaptive critic heuristic for the SMDP under the long-run average reward *** present the convergence analysis of the algorithm which shows that under certain mild conditions,which can be ensured within a simulator,the algorithm converges to an optimal solution with probability *** test the algorithm extensively on a problem of airline revenue management in which the manager has to set prices for airline tickets over the booking *** problem has a large scale,suffering from the curse of dimensionality,and hence it is difficult to solve it via classical methods of dynamic *** numerical results are encouraging and show that the algorithm outperforms an existing heuristic used widely in the airline industry.
