Influence of supraphysiological cortisol manipulation on predator avoidance behaviors and physiological responses to a predation threat in a wild marine teleost fish

The stress axis in teleost fish attempts to maintain internal homeostasis in the face of allostatic ***,stress axis induction has been associated with a higher predation rate in *** date,the physiological and behavioral factors associated with this outcome are poorly *** purpose of the present study was to investigate the impact of experimental cortisol elevation on anti-predator behavior and physiological responses to predator *** hypothesized that semi-chronic cortisol elevation would increase susceptibility to predation by increasing stress-induced risk-taking *** test this hypothesis,schoolmaster snapper were given cocoa butter implants without cortisol(sham)or with cortisol(50 mg/kg body weight)and tethered to *** were exposed to either a lemon shark or control conditions for *** use and activity were recorded throughout and fish were terminally sampled for *** implantation,relative to shams,resulted in higher blood glucose and plasma cortisol concentrations with a lower plasma lactate *** exposure,relative to controls,elicited higher blood glucose and lactate concentrations but had no effect on plasma cortisol *** interactions were detected between shark exposure and cortisol treatment for any physiological *** metrics,including shelter use and activity,were unaffected by either cortisol implantation or shark *** responses to cortisol implantation likely resulted from enhanced gluconeogenic activity,whereas alterations under predator exposure may have been the product of catecholamine *** work should address context-specific influences of stress in mediating behavioral responses to predation.

Background:Physiological and biochemical processes across tissues of the body are regulated in response to the high demands of intense physical activity in several occupations,such as firefighting,law enforcement,military,and sports.A better understanding of such processes can ultimately help improve human performance and prevent illnesses in the work ***:To study regulatory processes in intense physical activity simulating real-life conditions,we performed a multi-omics analysis of 3 biofluids(blood plasma,urine,and saliva)collected from 11 wildland firefighters before and after a 45 min,intense exercise *** profiles ***-exercise were compared by Student’s t-test followed by pathway analysis and comparison between the different omics ***:Our multi-omics analysis identified and quantified 3835 proteins,730 lipids and 182 metabolites combining the 3 different types of *** blood plasma analysis revealed signatures of tissue damage and acute repair response accompanied by enhanced carbon metabolism to meet energy *** urine analysis showed a strong,concomitant regulation of 6 out of 8 identified proteins from the renin-angiotensin system supporting increased excretion of catabolites,reabsorption of nutrients and maintenance of fluid *** saliva,we observed a decrease in 3 pro-inflammatory cytokines and an increase in 8 antimicrobial peptides.A systematic literature review identified 6 papers that support an altered susceptibility to respiratory ***:This study shows simultaneous regulatory signatures in biofluids indicative of homeostatic maintenance during intense physical activity with possible effects on increased infection susceptibility,suggesting that caution against respiratory diseases could benefit workers on highly physical demanding jobs.

Evolution of IPv6 Internet topology with unusual sudden changes

The evolution of Internet topology is not always smooth but sometimes with unusual sudden changes. Consequently, identifying patterns of unusual topology evolution is critical for Internet topology modeling and simulation. We analyze IPv6 Internet topology evolution in IP-level graph to demonstrate how it changes in uncommon ways to restructure the Internet. After evaluating the changes of average degree, average path length, and some other metrics over time, we find that in the case of a large-scale growing the Internet becomes more robust; whereas in a top–bottom connection enhancement the Internet maintains its efficiency with links largely decreased.

Adrenomedullin and endocrine control of immune cells during pregnancy

The immunology of pregnancy is complex and incompletely understood. Aberrant immune activity in the decidua and in the placenta is believed to play a role in diseases of pregnancy, such as infertility, miscarriage, fetal growth restriction and preeclampsia. Here, we briefly review the endocrine control of uterine natural killer cell populations and their functions by the peptide hormone adrenomedullin. Studies in genetic animal models have revealed the critical importance of adrenomedullin dosage at the maternal-fetal interface, with cells from both the maternal and fetal compartments contributing to essential aspects underlying appropriate uterine receptivity, implantation and vascular remodeling of spiral arteries. These basic insights into the crosstalk between the endocrine and immune systems within the maternal- fetal interface may ultimately translate to a better understanding of the functions and consequences of dysregulated adrenomedullin levels in clinically complicated pregnancies.

Predicting phosphorus sorption isotherm parameters in soil using data of routine laboratory tests

Knowledge of phosphorus(P)sorption dynamics across different soil types could direct agronomic and environmental management of *** objective of this study was to predict P isotherm parameters for a national soil population using data of routine laboratory *** and Freundlich sorption parameters were calculated from two different ranges(0-25 and 0-50 mg P L^(-1))using an archive of representative agricultural soil types from *** linear regression(mLR)identified labile forms of aluminium(Al)and iron(Fe),organic matter(Om),cation exchange capacity(CEC),and clay as significant *** and Freundlich sorption capacities,Freundlich affinity constant,and Langmuir buffer capacity were predicted reliably,with R^(2) of independent validation>*** isotherm parameters were predicted from P sorbed at a single concentration of 50 mg P L^(-1)(S_(50)).An mLR prediction of P sorption maximum in the 0-50 mg P L-1 range was achieved,to an accurate standard,using S_(50),Om,and mehlich-3 Fe(R^(2) of independent calibration and validation being 0.91 and 0.95,respectively).Using Giles’four shapes of isotherms(C,L,H,and S),L non-strict-and C-shaped isotherm curves accounted for 64% and 27% of the soils,*** clustering identified a separation of isotherm curves influenced by two ranges of mehlich-3 *** with a low range of mehlich-3 Al(2.5-698 mg kg^(-1))had no incidence of rapid sorption(C shape).Single point indices,Al,or available soil data make the regression approach a feasible way of predicting Langmuir parameters that could be included with standard agronomic soil P testing.

Organic carbon content and carbon isotope variations across the Permo-Triassic boundary in the Gartnerkofel-1borehole, Carnic Alps, Austria

The Gartnerkofel borehole is one of the most thoroughly studied and described Permo-Triassic sections in the world. Detailed bulk organic carbon isotope studies show a negative base shift from-24% to-28% in the Latest Permian which latter value persists into the Earliest Triassic after which it decreases slightly to-26%. Two strongly negative peaks of [-38% in the Latest Permian and a lesser peak of-31% in the Early Triassic are too negative to be due to a greater proportion of more negative organic matter and must be due to very negative methane effects. The overall change to more negative values across the Bulla/Tesero boundary fits the relative rise in sea level for this transition based on the facies changes. A positive shift in organic carbon isotope values at the Late Permian Event Horizon may be due to an increase in land-derived organic detritus at this level—a feature shown by allTethyan Permo-Triassic boundary sections though these other sections do not have the same values. Carbonate carbon isotope trends are similar in all sections dropping by2–3 units across the Permo-Triassic boundary. Gartnerkofel carbonate oxygen values are surprisingly, considering the ubiquitous dolomitization, compatible with values elsewhere and indicate reasonable tropical temperatures of 60 °C in the Latest Permian sabkhas to 20–40 °C in the overlying marine transition beds. Increased landderived input at the Late Permian Event Horizon may be due to offshore transport by tsunamis whose deposits have been recognized in India at this level.

Genetic variability of the stable fly assessed on a global scale using amplified fragment length polymorphism

The stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans （L.）（Diptera： muscidae）, is a blood-feeding, economically important pest of animals and humans worldwide. Improved management strategies are essential and their development would benefit from studies on genetic di- versity of stable flies. Especially if done on a global scale, such research could generate information necessary for the development and application of more efficient control meth- ods. Herein we report on a genetic study of stable flies using amplified fragment length polymorphism, with samples of 10-40 individuals acquired from a total of 25 locations in the Nearctic, Neotropic, Palearctic, Afrotropic and Australasian biogeographical regions. We hypothesized that genetic differentiation would exist across geographical barriers. Although Fsx （0.33） was moderately high, the Gsx （0.05; representing genetic diversity between individuals） was very low; Nm values （representing gene flow） were high （9.36）. The mismatch distribution and tests of neutrality suggested population expansion, with no genetic differentiation between locations. The analysis of molecular variance （AmOVA） results showed the majority of genetic diversity was within groups. The mantel test showed no correlation between geographic and genetic distance; this strongly supports the AmOVA results. These results suggest that stable flies did not show genetic differentiation but are panmictic, with no evidence of isolation by distance or across geographical barriers.

Arabidopsis CAmTA Transcription Factors Regulate Pipecolic Acid Biosynthesis and Priming of Immunity Genes

The Arabidopsis thaliana Calmodulin-binding Transcription Activator(CAmTA)transcription factors CAmTA1,CAmTA2,and CAmTA3(CAmTA123)serve as master regulators of salicylic acid(SA)-mediated immunity,repressing the biosynthesis of SA in healthy ***,we show that CAmTA123 also repress the biosynthesis of pipecolic acid(Pip)in healthy *** of CAmTA123 function resulted in the induction of AGD2-like defense response protein 1(ALD1),which encodes an enzyme involved in Pip *** of ALD1 resulted in the accumulation of high levels of Pip,which brought about increased levels of the SA receptor protein NPR1 without induction of NPR1 expression or requirement for an increase in SA ***-mediated induction of ALD1 and genes regulating the biosynthesis of SA—CBP60g,SARD1,PAD4,and EDS1—was largely dependent on ***,Pip-mediated increase in NPR1 protein levels was associated with priming of Pip and SA biosynthesis genes to induction by low levels of *** together,our findings expand the role for CAmTA123 in regulating key immunity genes and suggest a working model whereby loss of CAmTA123 repression leads to the induction of plant defense genes and initiation of SAR.
