Grey squirrels(Sciurus carolinensis)are an invasive species in Britain and *** have replaced native red squirrels(Sciurus vulgaris)throughout most of Britain,and cause damage to ***,lethal control is used to manage grey squirrel populations in Britain,but nonlethal methods might be more acceptable to the *** such method is contraception with 20,25-diazacholesterol dihydrochloride(DiazaCon^(TM)).DiazaCon^(TM) inhibits the conversion of desmosterol to cholesterol,resulting in increasing desmosterol concentrations and decreasing cholesterol *** cholesterol is needed for the synthesis of steroid reproductive hormones,such as progesterone and testosterone,inhibition of cholesterol synthesis indirectly inhibits *** is used as a marker of efficacy in laboratory studies with species that do not reproduce readily in *** squirrels were gavaged with a DiazaCon^(TM) solution for 2 days,and then fed DiazaCon^(TM)-coated peanuts for an additional 8 days at target doses of 50 and 100 mg DiazaCon^(TM) per kg body *** was a significant difference in cholesterol concentrations in the treatment groups compared to the control *** was reduced by≥40%for 2 months in both treatment *** were no differences among groups with respect to blood chemistry and hematology parameters,and mean values are *** mean overall dose of DiazaCon^(TM) received was 29.0±1.6 and 55.3±4.3 mg/kg in the low(50 mg/kg)and high dose(100 mg/kg)groups,***^(TM) might provide an effective,acceptable alternative to lethal control.

Electrocardiographic Analysis of Patients with Suspicion of Acute Coronary Syndrome in Yaounde, Cameroon

Background: Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. IHD was thought to be an extremely rare occurrence in Sub-Saharan Africa, but the increasing economic development with changes in lifestyle has led to an increase in IHD risk factors which has motivated the interest of our study. Objectives: The aim was to study a group of patients with suspicion of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), in order to determine those with and without electrocardiographic diagnosis of ACS. Methods: It was an observational cross-sectional descriptive study over a period of six months, which included concerned patients who presented with retrosternal or precordial chest pain of onset being less than two weeks with at least one cardiovascular risk factor, in the cardiology units of three reference hospitals in Yaounde. Ethical clearance and authorizations were obtained from the competent authorities. We used a preformed questionnaire to obtain information from the patients concerning the demographic data, clinical presentation and electrocardiographic findings. Results: We recruited 100 patients with suspicion of ACS. 56 patients presented with electrocardiographic diagnosis of ACS and 44 patients did not. The mean age was 60.6 ± 11.5 years with age limits of 32 - 85 years in patients with ACS and 55.3 ± 16.6 years with age limits of 19 - 90 years in patients without ACS. The predominant age group was 60 - 69 years in both groups. The sex ratio (male/female) was 0.6 in patients with ACS and 0.7 in patients without ACS. The main complaints presented in both groups were;chest pain, fatigue, dyspnea and palpitation. The frequent cardiovascular risk factors in both groups were hypertension, age and overweight/obesity. In patients with ACS, 55.4% presented with ST-segment elevated acute coronary syndrome (STE-ACS) and 44.6% presented with non-ST-segment elevated acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS). Chinese nurses’ perceived impact of international educational experiences and cultural beliefs following a 1-year study abroad program: an exploratory study

Plants reorient their growth towards light to optimize photosynthetic light capture--a process known as phototropism. Phototropins are the photoreceptors essential for phototropic growth towards blue and ultraviolet-A （UV- A） light. Here we detail a phototropic response towards UV-B in etiolated Arabidopsis seedlings. We report that early differential growth is mediated by phototropins but clear phototropic bending to UV-B is maintained in photl phot2 double mutants. We further show that this phototropin-independent phototropic response to UV-B requires the UVoB photoreceptor UVR8. Broad UV-B-mediated repression of auxin-responsive genes suggests that UVR8 regulates directional bending by affecting auxin signaling. Kinetic analysis shows that UVR8-dependent directional bending occurs later than the phototropin response. We conclude that plants may use the full short-wavelength spectrum of sunlight to efficiently reorient photosynthetic tissue with incoming light.

Aim： To investigate whether urine is a good medium for screening and whether there is a correlation between the amount of extracted DNA and human papillomavirus （HPV）-positivity. Methods： In the present study, 30 first-voided urine （FVU） specimens and 20 urethroglandular swabs using cervex-brushes from male partners of HPV-positive patients, and 31 FVU specimens and 100 liquid-based cervix cytology leftovers sampled with cervix-brushes from HPV-positive women were examined for the presence of β-globin. Oncogenic HPV were detected using type-specific PCR. Results： β-globin was found in all the brushed samples, whereas it was found in only 68.9% of the FVU specimens. HPV-PCR was positive in 60.0% of the male brushes, in 29% of the female brushes and in 0% of the male FVU specimens. DNA concentration was, respectively, 0.9998 ng/μL, 37.0598 ng/μL and 0.0207 ng/μL. Conclusion： Urine is not a good tool for HPV detection, probably because the low DNA concentration reflects a low amount of collected cells. β-globin is measurable in FVU by real time quantitative PCR, but the DNA concentration is lower compared to brush sampling for both genders. β-globin-positivity of urethral and cervical swabs is 100%, showing a higher mean concentration of DNA, leading to a higher detection rate of HPV. This is the first article linking DNA- concentration to the presence of HPV.
