Swallowing is an ensemble of voluntary and autonomic processes key to maintaining our body’s h.meostatic *** swallowing(dysph.gia)can cause deh.dration,malnutrition,aspiration pneumonia,weigh. loss,anxiety,or even mortality—especially in older adults—by airway *** prevent or mitigate th.se outcomes,it is imperative to regularly assess swallowing ability in th.se wh. are at risk of developing dysph.gia and th.se already diagnosed with.***,current diagnostic tools such.as endoscopy,manometry,and videofluoroscopy require access to clinical experts to interpret th. *** results are often sampled from a limited examination timeframe of swallowing activity in a controlled ***,th.re is some risk of periprocedural complications associated with.th.se *** contrast,th. field of epidermal sensors is finding non-invasive and minimally obtrusive ways to examine swallowing function and *** th.s review,we summarize th. current state of wearable devices th.t are aimed at monitoring swallowing function and detecting its *** pay particular attention to th. materials and design parameters th.t enable th.ir *** examine a compilation of both.proof-of-concept studies(wh.ch.focus mainly on th. engineering of th. device)and studies wh.se aims are biomedical(wh.ch.may involve larger coh.rts of subjects,including patients).Furth.rmore,we briefly discuss th. meth.ds of signal acquisition and device assessment in relevant wearable ***,we examine th. need to increase adh.rence and engagement of patients with.such.devices and discuss enh.ncements to th. design of such.epidermal sensors th.t may encourage greater enth.siasm for ath.me and long-term monitoring.

Long-term modifications of blood pressure in normotensive and spontane-ously h.pertensive rats by gene delivery of rAAV-mediated cytoch.ome P450 arach.donic acid h.droxylase

Arach.donic acid cytoch.ome P-450 (CYP) h.droxylase 4A isoforms, including 4A1, 4A2, 4A3 and 4A8 in th. rat kidney, catalyze arach.donic acid to produce 19/20-h.droxyeicosatetraenoic acids (20-h.TE), a biologically active metabolite, wh.ch.plays an important role in th. regulation of blood pressure. h.wever, controversial results h.ve been reported regarding th. exact role of 20-h.TE on blood pressure. In th. present study, we used recombinant adeno- associated viral vector (rAAV) to deliver CYP 4A1 cDNA and antisense 4A1 cDNA into Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats and spontaneously h.pertensive rats (Sh.), respectively, to investigate th. effects of long-term modifications of blood pressure and th. potential for gene th.rapy of h.pertension. Th. mean systolic pressure increased by 14.2±2.5 mm h. in rAAV·4A1-treated SD rats and decreased by 13.7±2.2 mm h. in rAAV·anti4A1-treated Sh. rats 5 weeks after th. injection compared with.controls and th.se ch.nges in blood pressure were maintained until th. experiments ended at 24 weeks. In 4A1 treated animals CYP4A was overexpressed in various tissues, but preferentially in th. kidney at both.mRNA and protein levels. In anti-4A1-treated Sh., CYP4A mRNA in various tissues was probed, especially in kidneys, but 4A1 protein expression was almost completely inh.bited. Th.se results suggest th.t arach.donic acid CYP h.droxy- lases contribute not only to th. maintenance of normal blood pressure but also to th. development of h.pertension. rAAV-mediated anti4A administration strategy h.s th. potential to be used as targeted gene th.rapy in h.man h.perten- sion by blocking expression of CYP 4A in kidneys.

h.man neural stem cells（h.NSCs） are a useful tool to assess th. developmental effects of various environmental contaminants; h.wever, th. application of h.NSCs to evaluate water disinfection byproducts（DBPs） is scarce. Compreh.nsive toxicological results are essential to th. prioritization of DBPs for furth.r testing and regulation. Th.refore, th.s study examines th. effects of DBPs on th. proliferation and differentiation of h.NSCs. Prior to DBP treatment, ch.racteristic protein markers of h.NSCs from passages 3 to 6 were carefully examined and it was determined th.t h.NSCs passaged 3 or 4 times maintained stem cell ch.racteristics and can be used for DBP analysis. Two regulated DBPs, monobromoacetic acid（BAA） and monoch.oroacetic acid（CAA）, and two emerging DBPs, 2,6-dibromo-1,4-benzoquinone（2,6-DBBQ） and 2,6-dich.oro-1,4-benzoquinone（2,6-DCBQ）, were ch.sen for h.NSC treatment. Both.2,6-DBBQ and 2,6-DCBQ induced cell cycle arrest at S-ph.se at concentrations up to 1 μmol/L. Comparatively, BAA and CAA at 0.5 μmol/L affected neural differentiation. Th.se results suggest DBP-dependent effects on h.NSC proliferation and differentiation. Th. DBP-induced cell cycle arrest and inh.bition of normal h.NSC differentiation demonstrate th. need to assess th. developmental neurotoxicity of DBPs.

Cross-cultural psych.metric assessment of th. parent-teen sexual risk communication (PTSRC-III) scale in Jamaica

Background: h.V/AIDS represents a serious h.alth.th.eat in Jamaica. Adolescent and young adult females are at particularly h.gh.risk. US studies h.ve sh.wn th.t parent-teen sexual communication may significantly influence th. sexual risk-related beliefs and beh.viors. h.wever, no studies h.ve examined parent-teen sexual communication in Jamaica or th. wider Caribbean. Objective: Th. study aims to describe patterns of parent-teen sexual communication between Jamaican moth.rs and adolescent daugh.ers and assess th. psych.metric properties of th. Parent-Teen Sexual Risk Communication (PTSRC-III) scale wh.n used with.th.s population. Meth.d: Data were collected as part of a larger randomized controlled trial study. A total of 330 urban Jamaican adolescent girls, ages 13 - 17, and th.ir moth.rs or female guardians completed th. 8-item PTSRC-III scale at baseline and 3-month.follow-up. Results: Moth.rs’ and daugh.ers’ scores covered th. full range of possible scores. Internal reliability of th. PTSRC-III scale was excellent (α = 0.92 and 0.93 for moth.rs and daugh.ers, respectively). Th.re was evidence of consistency over time (r = 0.57, p r = 0.27, p r = 0.427, p r = 0.146, p = 0.008). A two-factor structure was identified, alth.ugh.th. second factor sh.wed a lower eigen-value th.n was found in previous US studies. Th. loading pattern and explanation of variance were very similar to th. factor 2 described in th. initial psych.metric testing of th. PTSRC-III instrument. Discussion: Patterns of sexual communication and th. psych.metrics of th. scale wh.n used in Jamaica were consistent with.US results, and provided evidence of th. cross-cultural reliability and validity of th. PTSRC-III scale.

Sexual size dimorph.sm （SSD） is widespread among diverse animal taxa and h.s attracted th. attention of evolutionary biologists for over a century. SSD is likely to be adaptive and th. result of divergent selection on different size optima for males and females, given th.ir different roles in reproduction. Th. developmental trajectory leading to SSD may h.lp us to understand h.w selection acts on male and female size. h.re, we describe th. growth.and development of two Australian praying mantids, Pseudomantis albofimbriata and h.erodula majuscula including th. number of moults, time to adulth.od, size at each.moult, and th. degree of SSD. Wh.le both.species exh.bit th. common pattern of female-biased SSD, th. number of moults required for individuals to reach.adulth.od differed between males and females and between species. Despite th.ir larger adult size, P. albofimbriata females require fewer moults and less time th.n males to reach.adulth.od, but are significantly larger th.n males from th. second instar onwards. In contrast, h. majuscula males reach.d adulth.od in fewer moults, and less time th.n females, h.wever males and females did not differ in size until females went th.ough.th.ir final moult into adulth.od. h. majuscula also required more time and more moults to reach.adulth.od th.n 17. albofimbriata. We discuss th.se different developmental path.ays in ligh. of th. existing knowledge of reproductive biology for each.species. We also suggest th.t th.se differences may relate to th. different ph.nologies th.t occur in strongly seasonal temperate environments compared with.th.se in th. tropics. Th.s study provides evidence th.t SSD can result from two different patterns of growth.and development in closely related species.

Th. Effect of Obesity and Diabetes on Intermediate to h.gh.Grade Prostate Cancer Patients Treated with.Radical Prostatectomy

Aims: Th. relationsh.ps between obesity, diabetes and prostate cancer are unclear. A retrospective study was performed to determine th. effects of body mass index (BMI) and diabetes on patients with.intermediate to h.gh.grade prostate cancer treated with.radical prostatectomy. Meth.ds: We reviewed 582 patients with.Gleason score ≥ 7 non-metastatic prostate cancer treated with.radical prostatectomy. Patients were stratified by BMI. End points were bioch.mical failure free survival (BFFS), overall survival (OS), and cancer specific survival (CSS). Results: Mean pre-treatment PSA decreased with.increasing BMI (12.5, 7.6, 7.8 and 5.3 ng/mL with.BMI 35, respectively;p 35, respectively. h.wever, for overall mortality th. adjusted h.zard ratio was 0.39 (0.18, 0.82;p = 0.01) for overweigh. patients (BMI 25 - 30) compared to patients with.a BMI in th. normal range. Patients with.a BMI of 30 - 35 and > 35 h.d increased rates of positive margins th.n th.se with.a BMI of 25 - 30 or 35 2.04) on multivariate analysis, margin positivity alone was not a significant factor. Conclusions: Patients with.increasing BMI tend to h.ve a lower PSA at diagnosis but are more likely to h.ve bioch.mical failure after radical prostatectomy. In our coh.rt, th.s was not due to th. increased incidence of positive margins. h.ving diabetes h.d no effect.
