BACKGr.UND: Emer.ency medicine pr.vider.(EMPs) pr.scr.be about 25% of opioids, but the effect of EMP r.sk per.eption on decisions to pr.scr.be opioids is unknown. This study was under.aken to identify factor. that infl uence EMP r.sk and opioid pr.scr.bing ***: We distr.buted an anonymous questionnair. to EMPs at a militar. tr.uma and r.fer.al center. r.sponse fr.quencies and distr.butions wer. assessed for.independence using the Chi-squar. ***: Eighty-nine EMPs completed the questionnair.(100% r.sponse). r.spondents wer. pr.mar.ly younger.male physicians(80%) in pr.ctice under.fi ve year.(55%). Male EMPs wer. mor. likely to pr.scr.be mor. opioid tablets than female ones both when and when not concer.ed for.opioid misuse(Pr.spectively). Of the pr.vider., 70% stated that patient age would inf luence their.pr.scr.bing decisions. Hydr.codone and oxycodone wer. the opioids pr.scr.bed most fr.quently. About 60% of the pr.vider. r.por.ed changing their.pr.scr.bing behavior.would not pr.vent opioid misuse. Additionally, 40% of the pr.vider. believed at least 10% of patients seen at this militar. ED misused ***: Female EM pr.vider. r.por.ed pr.scr.bing fewer.opioid tablets. Patient age infl uenced pr.scr.bing behavior. but the effect is unknown. Finally, EM pr.vider. r.por.ed that alter.ng their.pr.scr.bing behavior.would not pr.vent pr.scr.ption opioid misuse.
