Nutrient Evaluation of Dining Center Food Waste and Com.arison to m.nogastric and Rum.nant Feedstuffs

The objective of this study was to analyze the nutrient com.osition and variability of university dining hall food waste and com.are it with com.on feedstuffs used in rum.nant and m.nogastric diets. Food waste was categorized into two initial stream.: m.instream.(m.) from.the serving line and vegetable preparation (VP) from.the kitchen. Waste was collected from.the Kram.r Dining Center, Kansas State University, resulting in 30 daily sam.les. Waste was weighed and ground to hom.genous particle size. Daily sam.les of m. and VP were analyzed for nutrient com.osition, where results were com.ined to calculate the nutrient profile of a hypothetical m.xed food waste stream.(m.) com.osited by total weight. Data were analyzed using R statistical software (v 4.2.2). m.isture and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) were greater in VP (P , while ether extract (EE) was less com.ared to m. and m.. Crude protein (CP) was greater (P m. and m. stream. com.ared to VP. The total digestible nutrients (TDN) and energy were greater in m. food waste than in m., which was also greater than VP (P content, m.asured by standard deviation, was sim.lar (P > 0.05) am.ng stream. for NDF, nitrogen-corrected neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent insoluble crude protein, CP, ash, lignin, and digestible and m.tabolizable energy. Dry m.tter and EE variation were greater (P m., whereas VP was less (P m.ared to m.. Standard deviation increased (P m. and m. for neutral detergent insoluble crude protein, TDN, and gross energy when com.ared to VP. Despite having 70% - 80% m.isture, dining hall food waste does have nutritive value and the potential to be included in rum.nant and m.nogastric diets. Further research needs to be done to understand the value of including it in anim.l diets.

Bariatric surgery is a routinely perform.d procedure and is associated with a reduction in all-cause m.rtality in patients with obesity.However,bariatric sur-gery has also been linked to increased alcohol use with up to 30%of these patients developing alcohol use disorder(AUD).The m.chanism.of AUD after bariatric surgery is m.ltifactorial and includes anatom.c,m.tabolic,and neurohum.ral changes associated with post-surgical anatom..These patients are at increased risk of alcohol associated liver disease and,in som. cases,require liver trans-plantation.In this article,we provide a scoping review of epidem.ology,patho-physiology,and clinical outcom.s of alcohol-related health conditions after bariatric surgery.

BACKGROUND Unhealthy m.ternal diet leads to heavy m.tal exposures from.the consum.tion of ultra-processed foods that m.y im.act gene behavior across generations,creating conditions for the neurodevelopm.ntal disorders known as autism.and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder(ADHD).Children with these disorders have difficulty m.tabolizing and excreting heavy m.tals from.their bloodstream.and the severity of their sym.tom. correlates with the heavy m.tal levels m.asured in their blood.Psychiatrists m.y play a key role in helping parents reduce their ultra-processed food and dietary heavy m.tal intake by providing access to effective nutritional epigenetics education.AIm.To test the efficacy of nutritional epigenetics instruction in reducing parental ultra-processed food intake.m.THODS The study utilized a sem.-random.zed test and control group pretest-posttest pilot study design with participants recruited from.parents having a learning-disabled child with autism.or ADHD.Twenty-two parents who m.t the inclusion criteria were random.y selected to serve in the test(n=11)or control(n=11)group.The test group participated in the six-week online nutritional epigenetics tutorial,while the control group did not.The efficacy of the nutritional epigenetics instruction was determ.ned by m.asuring changes in parent diet and attitude using data derived from.an online diet survey adm.nistered to the participants during the pre and post intervention periods.Diet intake scores were derived for both ultra-processed and whole/organic foods.Paired sam.le t-tests were conducted to determ.ne any differences in m.an diet scores within each group.RESULTS There was a significant difference in the diet scores of the test group between the pre-and post-intervention periods.The parents in the test group significantly reduced their intake of ultra-processed foods with a preintervention diet score of 70(m.an=5.385,SD=2.534)and a post-intervention diet score of 113(m.an=8.692,SD=1.750)and the paired t-test analysis showing a significance of

Sarcopenic obesity increases the risk of m.rtality in patients with liver disease awaiting liver transplantation and in the post-transplant period.Nutrition recom.endations for individuals with sarcopenia differ from.recom.endations for patients with obesity or sarcopenic obesity.While these nutrition guidelines have been established in non-cirrhotic patients,established guidelines for liver transplant candidates with sarcopenic obesity are lacking.In this paper,we review existing literature on sarcopenic obesity in patients with chronic liver disease and address opportunities to im.rove nutritional counseling in patients awaiting liver transplantation.

Plastic pollution, both prim.ry and secondary, is an environm.ntal challenge, prom.ting regulatory actions at global and regional levels. With increasing research about the im.acts of m.cro- and nanoplastics on ecosystem. and hum.n health, governm.nts worldwide have undertaken efforts to address this issue. The global com.unity has advanced regulatory efforts that have led to the im.lem.ntation of national laws or regulations in num.rous countries. These m.asures ban or restrict the use of prim.ry and secondary m.croplastics and nanoplastics. An overview of global and European regulatory fram.works is presented to provide context for the United States (US). In the endeavor to docum.nt plastics regulation developm.nt in the US, a description of regulatory agencies and their roles in advancing policy and rules as well as future direction and areas for im.rovem.nt in regulating plastics are introduced. A discussion of what em.rging regulations m.an to utilities and industries is also provided along with a com.arison of regulatory fram.works.

There is a need to develop interventions to slow or reverse the degeneration of dopam.ne neurons in Parkinson’s disease after diagnosis.Given that preclinical and clinical studies suggest benefits of dietary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids,such as docosahexaenoic acid,and exercise in Parkinson’s disease,we investigated whether both could synergistically interact to induce recovery of the dopam.nergic pathway.First,m.ce received a unilateral stereotactic injection of 6-hydroxydopam.ne into the striatum.to establish an anim.l m.del of nigrostriatal denervation.Four weeks after lesion,anim.ls were fed a docosahexaenoic acid-enriched or a control diet for the next 8 weeks.During this period,the anim.ls had access to a running wheel,which they could use or not.Docosahexaenoic acid treatm.nt,voluntary exercise,or the com.ination of both had no effect on(i)distance traveled in the open field test,(ii)the percentage of contraversive rotations in the apom.rphine-induction test or(iii)the num.er of tyrosine-hydroxylase-positive cells in the substantia nigra pars com.acta.However,the docosahexaenoic acid diet increased the num.er of tyrosine-hydroxylase-positive term.nals and induced a rise in dopam.ne concentrations in the lesioned striatum.Com.ared to docosahexaenoic acid treatm.nt or exercise alone,the com.ination of docosahexaenoic acid and exercise(i)im.roved forelim. balance in the stepping test,(ii)decreased the striatal DOPAC/dopam.ne ratio and(iii)led to increased dopam.ne transporter levels in the lesioned striatum.The present results suggest that the com.ination of exercise and docosahexaenoic acid m.y act synergistically in the striatum.of m.ce with a unilateral lesion of the dopam.nergic system.and provide support for clinical trials com.ining nutrition and physical exercise in the treatm.nt of Parkinson’s disease.

Objective:Although standard of care for prim.ry nasopharyngeal carcinom.(NPC)is chem.radiotherapy,there rem.ins no consensus on m.nagem.nt of recurrent or m.tastatic disease.We characterized recent clinical trials on NPC to assess trends in NPC treatm.nt and establish prom.sing areas for future research.Study Design:Retrospective database study.Setting:ClinicalTrials.gov database.m.thods:Retrospective review of all NPC trials from.Novem.er 1999 to June 2021.For each study,the following variables were extracted:study characteristics,intervention,outcom. m.asures,and inclusion criteria.Secondary searches via Pubm.d and Google scholar determ.ned trial publication status.Results:A total of 448 clinical trials were identified:72(16%)observational and 376(84%)interventional,of which there were 30(8%)Phase I,183(49%)Phase II,86 Phase III(23%),and 5(1%)Phase IV trials.Fifty-four percent of trials included only prim.ry NPC while 111(25%)exclusively studied recurrent cancers.The m.st com.on interventions were cisplatin(n=64)and intensity m.dulated radiation therapy(n=54);there were 38 trials involving PD-1 m.noclonal antibodies.Thirty-four studies exam.ned quality of life m.asures,including xerostom.a and m.cositis.Of the com.leted studies,53.2%have published m.nuscripts.Poor patient accrual was the m.st com.on reason for prem.ture study term.nation.Conclusions:Novel im.unotherapies have been increasingly incorporated into NPC studies in recent years,however,chem.therapy and radiation,despite their num.rous side effects,are still widely used due to their clinical effectiveness.Future trials are warranted to determ.ne the optim.l therapeutic regim.ns to decrease relapse rates and side effects.

Kidney disease in patients with liver disease is serious and increases m.rtality.Up to 50%of patients hospitalized experience an episode of acute kidney injury.In general,m.n with liver disease are thought to be at increased risk of kidney disease.However,this association should be considered with caution because m.st studies use creatinine-based inclusion criteria,which is negatively biased against wom.n.In this review,we synthesize data on sex differences in kidney disease in patients with chronic liver disease in the clinical setting and discuss potential physiologic underpinnings.

Liver injury is an increasingly recognized extra-pulm.nary m.nifestation of severe acute respiratory syndrom. coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)infection.Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)associated liver injury(COVALI)is a clinical syndrom. encom.assing all patients with biochem.cal liver injury identified in the setting of SARS-CoV-2 infection.Despite profound clinical im.lications,its pathophysiology is poorly understood.Unfortunately,m.st inform.tion on COVALI is derived from.the general population and m.y not be applicable to individuals under-represented in research,including pregnant individuals.This m.nuscript reviews:Clinical features of COVALI,leading theories of COVALI,and existing literature on COVALI during pregnancy,a topic not widely explored in the literature.Ultim.tely,we synthesized data from.the general and perinatal populations that dem.nstrates COVALI to be a hepatocellular transam.nitis that is likely induced by system.c inflam.ation and that is strongly associated with disease severity and poorer clinical outcom.,and offered perspective on approaching transam.nitis in the potentially COVID-19 positive patient in the obstetric setting.

Background Cerebral sm.ll vessel disease(SVD)causes lacunar strokes(25%of all ischaem.c strokes),physical frailty and cognitive im.airm.nt and vascular and m.xed dem.ntia.There is no specific treatm.nt to prevent progression of SVD.m.thods The LACunar Intervention Trial-2 is an investigator-initiated prospective random.sed open-label blinded-endpoint phase II feasibility study assessing cilostazol and isosorbide m.nonitrate for preventing SVD progression.We aim.d to recruit 400 patients with clinically evident lacunar ischaem.c stroke and random.sed to cilostazol,isosorbide m.nonitrate,both or neither,in addition to guideline secondary ischaem.c stroke prevention,in a partial factorial design.The prim.ry outcom. is feasibility of recruitm.nt and adherence to m.dication;key secondary outcom.s include:drug tolerability;recurrent vascular events,cognition and function at 1 year after random.sation;and safety(bleeding,falls,death).Data are num.er(%)and m.dian(IQR).Results The trial com.enced on 5 February 2018 and ceased recruitm.nt on 31 m.y 2021 with 363 patients random.sed,with the following baseline characteristics:average age 64(56.0,72.0)years,fem.le 112(30.9%),stroke onset to random.sation 79.0(27.0,244.0)days,hypertension 267(73.6%),m.dian blood pressures 143.0(130.0,157.0)/83.0(75.0,90.0)m.
