Forest ecosystems are important for biodiversity conservation and human societies, but are under pressure due to climate change and human interventions. This applies to natural forests as well as tree plantations. The latter are globally widespread and therefore gaining increasing importance for biodiversity conservation. However, even after dieback due to increasing disturbance frequencies, such plantations are primarily managed for economic returns, leading to growing conflicts among stakeholders. In particular, the impact of forest management on biodiversity is being discussed. This study investigates the effects of five management approaches in a landscape severely affected by spruce(Picea abies L.) dieback on beetle diversity, conservation, and community *** considered direct effects of management and indirect effects of environmental parameters separately in ground-dwelling and flight-active beetles. Beetle diversity was strongly affected by forest management, with nonintervention deadwood stands being most beneficial for beetles. In addition, we show indirect effects of environmental factors. In general, parameters related to salvage logging(e.g. open canopies, tree stumps) influenced beetle diversity and conservation negatively, while positive effects were found for soil nutrient availability and plant species richness. Community composition differed strongly among management categories and indicated a lack of landscape connectivity for open habitat species, as we found only low proportions of such species even on salvage-logged sites. We propose a mixture of management approaches after bark beetle outbreaks, including a substantial proportion of non-intervention deadwood stands, to increase landscape heterogeneity and connectivity. This may increase overall biodiversity while addressing the concerns of both forestry and species conservation.

家禽红螨(PRM)(鸡皮刺螨)感染可以导致母鸡贫血、生产成绩下降,并产生应激相关的一些行为导致福利减少。本研究调查了感染了红螨的母鸡使用氟雷拉纳治疗清除红螨后,在母鸡健康、福利和生产成绩方面获得的潜在收益。分别从一个放养鸡场和大笼饲养鸡场各挑选一栋红螨感染的蛋鸡舍(分别饲养5400只母鸡和42400只母鸡)。氟雷拉纳(Exzolt;0.5mg/kg体重),间隔7d,2次饮水给药(第0周和第1周)。使用捕螨器评估螨虫数量。治疗前和治疗后,每周用相机记录夜间母鸡行为。散养鸡群,每周记录白天鸡群行为。为了评估给药前和给药后皮质酮水平,均从2个鸡舍随机收集鸡蛋,同时随机采集50只大笼饲养鸡群血液进行检测。收集鸡场记录的生产数据用于生产成绩的评估。结果:给药期间,2个鸡场氟雷拉纳的红螨杀灭效果均>99%。在大笼饲养和散养鸡场,治疗后晚上休息的母鸡的比例增加(分别为P<0.0001;P=0.0175)。给药后和给药前对比,可观察到熄灯后以下动作频次显著减少:摇头频次(大笼饲养鸡群,P<0.0001;放养鸡P=0.0233),羽毛整理(P=0.0032;P=0.0018),大笼饲养鸡群身体颤抖的频次(P=0.0108),翅膀垂直晃动(P=0.0002),抓头(P=0.0335),和轻啄羽毛的频次(P<0.0001)。在散养鸡场,白天下列行为显著减少:抓头(P<0.0001),摇头(P=0.0492),整理羽毛(P=0.0012)。参考对比标准生产数据,可见大笼饲养鸡群未见差异,但是在散养鸡场,随着周龄的增加产蛋率下降比标准预期少,蛋重增加比标准预期多。给药后,蛋的增加和血浆中皮质酮水平的提升,提示除了红螨感染还有其他应激因素存在。给药后,红细胞数量和血细胞比容也增加。结论:通过氟雷拉纳给药,消除红螨挑战,同时由于减少应激相关的行为,恢复因螨虫吸血造成的贫血,从而升高母鸡的动物福利,改善母鸡健康。

Using multispectral landsat and sentinel-2 satellite data to investigate vegetation change at Mount St. Helens since the great volcanic eruption in 1980

Long-term analyses of vegetation succession after catastrophic events are of high interest for an improved understanding of succession dynamics. However, in many studies such analyses were restricted to plot-based measurements. Contrarily, spatially continuous observations of succession dynamics over extended areas and timeperiods are sparse. Here, we applied a change vector analysis(CVA) to investigate vegetation succession dynamics at Mount St. Helens after the great volcanic eruption in 1980 using Landsat. We additionally applied a supervised random forest classification using Sentinel-2 data to map the currently prevailing vegetation types. Change vector analysis was performed with the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI) and the urban index(UI) for three subsequent decades after the eruption as well as for the whole observation time between 1984 and 2016. The influence of topography on the current vegetation distribution was examined by comparing altitude, slope angles and aspect values of vegetation classes derived by the random forest classification. WilcoxRank-Sum test was applied to test for significant differences between topographic properties of the vegetation classes inside and outside of the areas affected by the eruption. For the full time period, a total area of 516 km2 was identified as re-vegetated, whereas the area and magnitude of re-growing vegetation decreased during the three decades and migrated closer to the volcanic crater. Vegetation losses were mainly observed in regions unaffected by the eruption and related mostly to timber harvesting. The vegetation type classification reached a high overall accuracy of approximately 90%. 36 years after the eruption, coniferous and deciduous trees have established at formerly devastated areas dominating with a proportion of 66%, whereas shrubs are more abundant in riparian zones. Extending the operational lifetimes of all-direct electron transfer enzymatic biofuel cells by magnetically assembling and exchanging the active biocatalyst layers on stationary electrodes

Enzymatic biofuel cells promise green power generation from a variety of natural resources, yet these systems all suffer from time-dependent degradati on effects, in particular progress! ng inactivation of enzymes, which severely limit the operati on al lifetimes of such power sources. To extend operational lifetimes, we introduce a method to magnetically exchange exhausted enzymes for fresh ones. To this end, anodic and cathodic enzymes or enzyme cascades are immobilized on carbon coated magnetic nanoparticles. Under the action of suitable magnetic field gradie nts, these nano particles are assembled on the respective stati onary electrodes, or released from the electrodes for collection and subsequent excha nge. We dem on strate this method on a fructose/oxygen con suming biofuel cell emplo ying fructose dehydroge nase and bilirubin oxidase as well as on anodic and cathodic cascades employing fructose dehydrogenase/invertase and bilirubin oxidase/catalase, respectively. The en zyme-modified nan oparticles support direct electro n transfer bioelectrocatalytic curre nts by wiring the redox active cofactors to the carbonaceous coating and from there to the electrode surfaces. The facile injection, assembly, and removal of enzyme-modified magnetic nan oparticles along with fuel solutio n provides a promisi ng approach to exte nd the operati on al lifetime of enzymatic biofuel cells without the need for exchanging entire systems including chambers and electrodes.

Biomarkers for detection of alcohol consumption in liver transplantation

Alcoholic liver disease is an established, yet controversial, indication for liver transplantation. Although an abstinence period of up to 6 mo prior to transplantation is mandatory, alcohol relapse after transplantation is a common event. In case of recurrence of heavy drinking, graft survival is significantly impaired. Guidelines on detection and surveillance of alcohol consumption in this patient cohort are lacking. This review summarizes the challenge of patient selection as well as the current knowledge on established and novel alcohol biomarkers with special focus on liver transplant candidates and recipients.

Metabolomic evidence of independent biotransformation pathways for terpenes in two specialist mammalian herbivores (genus Neotoma)
