Achromatic patches are a common element of plumage patterns in many bird species and there is growing body of evidence that in many avian taxa they can play a signaling role in mate *** the blue tit Cyanistes caeruleus is a well-established model species in the studies on coloration,its white wing patch has never been examined in the context of sex-specific trait *** this exploratory study,we examined sexual size dimorphism and dichromatism of greater covert’s dots creating white wing patch and analyzed its correlations with current body condition and crown coloration—a trait with established role in sexual ***,we qualitatively analyzed microstructural barb morphology underlying covert’s *** found significant sexual dimorphism in the dot size independent of covert size and sexual dichromatism in both white dot and blue outer covert’s vane spectral *** structure of covert barbs within the white dot was similar to the one found in barbs from the blue part that is,with a medullary area consisting of dead keratinocytes containing channel-typeß-keratin spongy nanostructure and centrally located air ***,it lacked melanosomes which was the main observed ***,UV chroma of covert’s blue vane was positively correlated with crown UV chroma and current condition(the latter only in males),which should be a premise for further research on the signal function of the wing stripe.

Searching for Better Outcomes among Patients with Metastatic Triple- Negative Breast Cancer – Do We Have Novel Options on the Treatment Landscape?

Triple-negative breast cancer(TNBC),which accounts for approximately 15%of breast cancers(BCs)is characterized by a lack of expression of the hormone receptors(HRs)(estrogen receptor(ER)and progesterone receptor(PR)),and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2(HER2).TNBC reveals very aggressive behavior and often leads to poor ***,standard chemotherapy(CHT)is related to low response rates and short progression-free survival(PFS)in patients with metastatic TNBC,creating an unmet ***,recent recognition of different molecular subtypes and mutations within TNBC has allowed exploring some innovative targeted therapies,bringing new hope for women suffering from ***,some promising systemic treatment options in this area have been developed,including targeted therapies,such as poly(ADP-ribose)polymerase(PARP)inhibitors,immune checkpoint inhibitors,antibody-drug conjugates,and AKT *** aim of this mini-review is to address these novel treatment modalities and highlight the main directions for further research and clinical practice in the advanced or metastatic forms of *** article presents poly(ADP-ribose)polymerase(PARP)inhibitors(e.g.,olaparib,talazoparib,and valaparib for treatment of BRCA-mutated,HER2-negative metastatic BC),immune checkpoint inhibitors(atezolizumab and pembrolizumab),an antibody-drug conjugate(ADC)(sacituzumab govitecan),and AKT inhibitors(ipatasertib and capivasertib).A brief outline of the main clinical trials leading to the approval of these new medications has been ***,this overview discusses the efficacy and safety of these innovative treatment options,focusing on women with metastatic *** addition,this paper comments on some recent considerations,regarding avenues of delivering care and conduct clinical trials in patients with BC,during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Interrelations Between Psychological Stress and Cancer-Deciphering Molecular Signals in the Tumor Microenvironment

Current research has revealed some links between psychological stress and cellular mutation,neoplastic proliferation and metastasis in patients with *** stressful situations,the stress-related neuroendocrine mediators(e.g.,catecholamines,and glucocorticoids(GSs))are being secreted,via stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system(SNS),and the hypothalamic-pituitaryadrenocortical(HPA)*** may affect the malignant progression,since they can regulate various cellular signaling pathways,via adrenergic receptors(ARs)that are expressed by different types of neoplastic *** ARs increase the proliferation and invasive potential of such cells,and change their“behavior”in the tumor ***,cortisol and its glucocorticoid receptors(GRs)can promote stress-induced malignant growth and *** to stressful situations,often relevant to the cancer diagnosis and treatment,may accelerate tumor growth and spread(e.g.,via inflammation,angiogenesis,and migration).Studies have shown that psychological interventions can be helpful for adaptation to adverse circumstances during the therapeutic process in patients with *** mini-review will address some interrelations between psychological stress and *** will discuss how the receptor-mediated signaling pathways may lead to cancer initiation,propagation,and *** addition,it will describe a supportive role of the stress reduction strategies,for example,in patients with breast cancer(BC).

LCA in Environmental Management Systems—Results of Individual Interviews with Selected Enterprises from Poland and Sweden

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an analytical tool used for the environmental optimization of products and services within the entirety of its life cycle. ISO 14040 recommends use of the technique in numerous areas of environmental management such as in designing for the environment, eco-labelling, environmental communications and the assessment of the effects of environmental activities. Despite being theoretically feasible, certain applications of the ecological assessment of a life cycle such as the possibility of identification and evaluation of environmental aspects with the use of LCA are, in practice, still new to many environmental managers. With its strong points, the technique seems to be a valuable tool, especially in the context of apparent concepts of Product-Oriented Environmental Management Systems (POEMS). In order to verify the hypothesis, the author decided to verify the level of use of LCA in the area of identification and assessment of environmental aspects in selected organizations. Therefore, questionnaire interviews were conducted with representatives of selected Polish and Swedish enterprises who, at the time of the interview, had certified environmental management systems. The organizations were analyzed with respect to applied methods and techniques used for identification and assessment of environmental aspects as well as the degree of use of LCA both in this respect and in other areas of environmental management. This paper will present the results of this research and conclusions.

The influence of in ovo injection with the prebiotic DiNovoon the development of histomorphological parameters of the duodenum, body mass and productivity in large-scale poultry production conditions

Background: Among various feed additives currently used in poultry nutrition, an important role is played by bioactive substances, including prebiotics. The beneficial effect of these bioactive substances on the gastrointestinal tract and immune system give rise to improvements in broiler health and performance nutrition, thus increasing the productivity of these birds. An innovative method for introducing bioactive substances into chickens is the in ovo injection into eggs intended for hatching. The aim of the study was to evaluate the development of histomorphological parameters of the duodenum and productivity in chickens injected in ovo with the prebiotic DiNovo~?(extract of Laminaria species of seaweed, BioA tlantis Ltd., Ireland) on d 12 of incubation, under large-scale, high density poultry production ***: There was no significant impact of the injection of DiNovo~? prebiotic on the production parameters of broiler chickens(body weight, FCR, EBI and mortality) obtained on d 42 of rearing. No significant impact of the DiNovo~? injection on the duodenum weight and length was observed, as wel as on the CSA, diameter and muscular layer thickness of the duodenum. The in ovo injection of DiNovo~? significantly increased the width of the duodenal vil i(P < 0.05) and crypt depth(P < 0.01) of chickens on d 21 of rearing. Other histomorphological parameters of duodenal vil i at d 42 of chickens rearing such as: the height, width, and cross section area of vil i were significantly greater in chickens from the control group compared to those from the DiNovo~? group(P < 0.05 and P < 0.01).Conclusions: In conclusion, this study demonstrates that injection of DiNovo~? prebiotic into the air chamber of egg significantly influences the histomorphological parameters on d 21 of rearing without negatively affecting productivity in chickens at the end of rearing.

The aim of this review is to present and discuss the most recent literature about the processing of insect biomass and its impact on nutritive value,further implementation of meals and fats derived from invertebrates to livestock(poultry and swine),aquaculture(salmonids),and companion animal diets and their impact on growth performance,metabolic response,and gastrointestinal microbiota ***,the most important barriers to obtaining unified products in terms of their nutritive value are considered,i.e.,to define insects'nutrient requirements,including various technological groups and further biomass processing(slaughtering,drying,and storage).Due to the current limitation in the insect production process consisting of the lack of infrastructure,there is stress on the relatively small amount of insect products added to the animal diets as a functional feed ***,only in the case of pet nutrition may insects be considered a full replacement for commonly used environmentally harmful and allergenic ***,the least information has been published on this ***,more scientific data are needed,particularly when the pet food branch and insect-based diets are rapidly growing.

In insects,the cell-mediated immune response involves an active role of hemo-cytes in phagocytosis,nodulation,and *** these processes have been well documented in multiple species belonging to different insect orders,information con-cerning the immune response,particularly the hemocyte types and their specific function in the black soldier fly Hermetia illucens,is still *** is a serious gap in knowledge given the high economic relevance of *** larvae in waste management strategies and considering that the saprophagous feeding habits of this dipteran species have likely shaped its immune system to efficiently respond to *** present study repre-sents the first detailed characterization of black soldier fly hemocytes and provides new insights into the cell-mediated immune response of this *** particular,in addition to prohemocytes,we identified five hemocyte types that mount the immune response in the larva,and analyzed their behavior,role,and morphofunctional changes in response to bac-terial infection and injection of chromatographic *** results demonstrate that the circulating phagocytes in black soldier fly larvae are *** cells also take part in nodulation and encapsulation with granulocytes and lamellocyte-like cells,devel-oping a starting core for nodule/capsule formation to remove/encapsulate large bacterial aggregates/pathogens from the hemolymph,*** processes are supported by the release of melanin precursors from crystal cells and likely by mobilizing nutrient reserves in newly circulating adipohemocytes,which could thus trophically support other hemocytes during the immune ***,the regulation of the cell-mediated im-mune response by eicosanoids was investigated.
