Continental-scale assessment of provisioning soil functions in Europe

Changes of plasma fasting carnitine ester profile in patients with ulcerative colitis

AIM： To determine the plasma carnitine ester profile in adult patients with ulcerative culitis （UC） and compared with healthy control subjects. METHOD： Using ESI triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry, the carnitine ester profile was measured in 44 patients with UC and 44 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. RESULTS： There was no significant difference in the fasting free carnitine level between the patients with UC and the healthy controls. The fasting propionyl- （0.331 ± 0.019 vs 0.392 ± 0.017 μmol/L）, butyryl- （0.219 ± 0.014 vs 0.265 ± 0.012）, and isovalerylcarniUne （0.111 ± 0.008 vs 0.134 ± 0.008） levels were decreased in the UC patients. By contrast, the level of octanoyl- （0.147 ± 0.009 vs 0.114 ± 0.008）, decanoyl- （0.180 ± 0.012 vs 0.137 ± 0.008）, myristoyl- （0.048 ± 0.003 vs 0.039 ± 0.003）, palmitoyl- （0.128 ± 0.006 vs 0.109 ± 0.004）, palmitoleyl- （0.042±0.003 vs 0.031 ± 0.002） and oleylcarnitine （0.183 ± 0.007 vs 0.163 ± 0.007; P 〈 0.05 in all comparisons） were increased in the patients with UC. CONCLUSION： Our data suggest selective involvement of the carnitine esters in UC patients, probably due to their altered metabolism.

From Monoculture to Norfolk System: How the Number of Crops in Rotation Can Influence the Biodiversity of Arbuscular Mycorrhiza Assemblages in the Soil

Given the attention drawn since several decades by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) as potential biological alternatives to chemicals in a low-input agriculture, much effort has been spent in the investigation of mechanisms influencing the dynamics inside AMF communities. In the present study we evaluated the influence of different crop rotations on the AMF soil community, after a 50 y long-term field experiment established at Martonvásár, Hungary. Four types of crop rotation were chosen for sampling: corn monocropping, corn-alfalfa, corn-wheat, and corn-spring barley-peas-wheat. Community composition of AMF in soil was analyzed with a molecular approach amplifying a portion of 28S rDNA. The crop rotation practice didn’t show an influence on identity of the species composing AMF assemblages, but on the other hand seemed to affect positively the true diversity, defined as number of MOTUs present in the communities.

MicroRNAs as Targets and Tools in B-Cell Lymphoma Therapy

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are posttranscriptional regulators fine-tuning the level of most messenger RNAs (mRNAs) and proteins in mammalian cells. Their expression is dysregulated in neoplastic cells and upregulated or downregulated miRNAs play an important role in tumorigenesis. Changes in the miRNA transcriptome appear to be suitable markers for the differential diagnosis of various B-cell lymphoma types and there are therapeutic attempts to normalize the expression level of key cellular miRNAs involved in lymphomagenesis. In this review we wish to outline the most recent developments in the application of sophisticated, chemically modified antisense oligonucleotides and their nanoparticle complexes to suppress oncogenic miRNAs. These advances form the basis of a new therapeutic approach that may complement current protocols for B-cell lymphoma therapy. Anti-cytokine therapy aiming at the removal of cytokines that activate key oncomirs, and switching on silenced tumor suppressor miRNAs by epigenetic drugs might also be considered, on the long run, in the treatment of well defined B-cell lymphoma types.

Land Use and Property Changes in Hungary and Poland after EU Accession

Land property in the post socialist countries was rebuilt in the beginning of the 1990s. The process went in different way in all of the post-socialist countries. The result of the privatization of agricultural land was a fragmented, direct or indirect smallholder ownership structure in most of the new member states of the EU. The land, partly or totally was given back to the owners and inheritors of land reforms following the war. It means that considerable proportion of the land is cultivated by tenants, the fragmented estate structure decreases the efficiency and the increasing rental fees further destroy the profitability and competitiveness of farming. Regarding to the competitiveness of agriculture, Poland showed a developing tendency after the accession, but Hungary suffers from serious problems. Applying descriptive statistics between the changes of land use and land ownership during the research relation analysis, emphasizing the effect in competitiveness of the land price and a land rent, the paper tries to identify the main differences and similarities in land use and property structure, and their effects on the agricultural competitiveness based on the FADN data base, since 2004-2007.

BACKGROUND Hemodynamic instability and shock are associated with untoward outcomes in gastrointestinal ***,there are no studies in the existing literature on the proportion of patients who developed these outcomes after gastrointestinal *** To determine the pooled event rates in the available literature and specify them based on the bleeding *** The protocol was registered on PROSPERO in advance(CRD42021283258).A systematic search was performed in three databases(PubMed,EMBASE,and CENTRAL)on 14^(th) October *** proportions with 95%CI were calculated with a random-effects model.A subgroup analysis was carried out based on the time of assessment(on admission or during hospital stay).Heterogeneity was assessed by Higgins and Thompson’s I^(2) *** Joanna Briggs Institute Prevalence Critical Appraisal Tool was used for the risk of bias *** Reference Citation Analysis(https://***/)tool was applied to obtain the latest highlight *** We identified 11589 records,of which 220 studies were eligible for data *** overall proportion of shock and hemodynamic instability in general gastrointestinal bleeding patients was 0.25(95%CI:0.17-0.36,I^(2)=100%).In non-variceal bleeding,the proportion was 0.22(95%CI:0.14-0.31,I^(2)=100%),whereas it was 0.25(95%CI:0.19-0.32,I^(2)=100%)in variceal *** proportion of patients with colonic diverticular bleeding who developed shock or hemodynamic instability was 0.12(95%CI:0.06-0.22,I^(2)=90%).The risk of bias was low,and heterogeneity was high in all *** One in five,one in four,and one in eight patients develops shock or hemodynamic instability on admission or during hospitalization in the case of non-variceal,variceal,and colonic diverticular bleeding,respectively.

Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma, ALK-Negative Presenting in the Rectum: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

ALK-negative anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL, ALK-) is a CD30+ T-cell neoplasm composed of large lymphoid cells with abundant cytoplasm and pleomorphic nuclei that lacks expression of ALK protein. We describe a case of ALCL, ALK-with primary involvement of the rectum in a 37 year old man, where the original diagnosis was established based on a colonoscopic biopsy. T-cell lymphomas are rare in the colorectal area and besides ALCL, their differential diagnosis includes enteropathic T-cell lymphoma, peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified, NK/T cell lymphoma, or NK-cell enteropathy. In addition, syncytial variant of classical Hodgkin lymphoma or a pleomorphic CD30-positive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma should also be ruled out. We discuss pitfalls of the differential diagnosis and review the literature of anaplastic large cell lymphoma in the gastrointestinal tract. Correct diagnosis of ALCL in the colon is important to avoid a colorectal surgery for an assumed adenocarcinoma, and to open the possibility for lymphoma-directed chemotherapy.

Intralesional steroid is beneficial in benign refractory esophageal strictures:A meta-analysis

AIM To analyze the effect of intralesional steroid injections in addition to endoscopic dilation of benign refractory esophageal *** A comprehensive search was performed in three databases from inception to 10 April 2017 to identify trials, comparing the efficacy of endoscopic dilation to dilation combined with intralesional steroid injections. Following the data extraction, meta-analytical calculations were performed on measures of outcome by the randomeffects method of Der Simonian and Laird. Heterogeneity of the studies was tested by Cochrane's Q and I^2 statistics. Risk of quality and bias was assessed by the Newcastle Ottawa Scale and JADAD assessment *** Eleven articles were identified suitable for analyses, involving 343 patients, 235 cases and 229 controls in total. Four studies used crossover design with 121 subjects enrolled. The periodic dilation index(PDI) was comparable in 4 studies, where the pooled result showed a significant improvement of PDI in the steroid group(MD:-1.12 dilation/month, 95% CI:-1.99 to -0.25 P = 0.012; I^2 = 74.4%). The total number of repeat dilations(TNRD) was comparable in 5 studies and showed a non-significant decrease(MD:-1.17, 95%CI:-0.24-0.05, P = 0.057; I^2 = 0), while the dysphagia score(DS) was comparable in 5 studies and did not improve(SMD: 0.35, 95%CI:-0.38, 1.08, P = 0.351; I^2 = 83.98%) after intralesional steroid *** Intralesional steroid injection increases the time between endoscopic dilations of benign refractory esophageal strictures. However, its potential role needs further research.

Background:It remains unclear if the vascular and connective tissue structures of primary and metastatic tumors are intrinsically determined or whether these characteristics are defined by the host *** we examined the microanatomical steps of vasculature and connective tissue development of C38 colon carcinoma in different ***:Tumors produced in mice at five different locations(the cecal wall,skin,liver,lung,and brain)were ana-lyzed using fluorescent immunohistochemistry,electron microscopy and quantitative real-time polymerase chain ***:We found that in the cecal wall,skin,liver,and lung,resident fibroblasts differentiate into collagenous matrix-producing myofibroblasts at the tumor *** activated fibroblasts together with the produced matrix were incorporated by the *** connective tissue development culminated in the appearance of intratumoral tissue columns(centrally located single microvessels embedded in connective tissue and smooth muscle actin-expressing myofibroblasts surrounded by basement membrane).Conversely,in the brain(which lacks fibroblasts),C38 metasta-ses only induced the development of vascularized desmoplastic tissue columns when the growing tumor reached the fibroblast-containing ***:Our data suggest that the desmoplastic host tissue response is induced by tumor-derived fibrogenic molecules acting on host tissue *** concluded that not only the host tissue characteristics but also the tumor-derived fibrogenic signals determine the vascular and connective tissue structure of tumors.
