Bioremediation of malathion in soil by mixed Bacillus culture

Degradation of a pesticide, malathion, in soil by Bacillus sp has been reported during current study. A simple and highly sensitive reverse phase HPLC-UV (High pressure liquid chromatography-Ultraviolet) method was used for determination of malathion degradation in soil. The bioremediation of was performed in malathion contaminated sterile and nonsterile soil and it was found that 84.81% and 74.11% of malaoxon, respectively, from malathion concentration of 1.5% kg-1 soil was degraded by strain PU after 7 days. Similarly, 63.31% and 57.14% of malaoxon in sterile and nonsterile soil respectively, from malathion concentration of 1.5% kg-1 soil was degraded by strain KB2 after 7 days. Bioremediation of malathion in soil using strain KB1 have already discussed in the previous study (singh et al., 2012). Regardless of soil sterilization, incorporation of bacterial strain in malathion containing soil resulted in higher level of degradation of malathion. Bioremediation of malathion in soil was maximum for mixed culture of all three strains.

Chlorophytum borivilianum is a critically endangered plant well known for its medicinal properties for diabetes mellitus, diarrhea, arthritis, sterility, and erectile dysfunction, etc. Due to low viability and long dormancy of seeds, in vitro regeneration is required for large scale cultivation of this plant. In the present study, direct plant regeneration was optimized using flower stalk as explant. Nodal segments of flower stalk were sterilized and kept for direct regeneration on different combinations of BAP and KIN supplemented media. The highest, 15.27 ± 1.14 number of shoots were produced on medium containing BAP (2 mg/L) per nodal segment. The multiple shoot clumps regenerated from flower stalk were separated carefully and kept on rooting media. A maximum of 16.87 ± 1.53 roots per plant was observed in MS media having 0.5 mg/L of NAA. The rooted plantlets were shifted into the pot containing soilrite for hardening and acclimatization. The genetic stability of hardened plants was confirmed by start codon targeted, and inter simple sequence repeats molecular markers. The cultivation of grapes is severely impacted by the emergence of downy mildew (DM) disease which negatively affects quality and yield possibly resulting in heavy losses. Due to certain shortcomings in the usage of fungicides and the development of new cultivars by plant breeding, marker assisted selection (MAS) will be an efficient alternative method to introduce desired genes into the cultivated varieties in a short time period. The Simple sequence repeats (SSR) markers seem to be the most popular genetic marker of choice for MAS. In the present study, we identified 14 new SSR markers in RPV1 locus that are associated with downy mildew resistance in grapes. The characterization of the identified markers was carried out on the basis of various parameters such as types of repeat motifs, number of repeats, different classes and structure of microsatellites. Additionally, SSR genotyping in 56 different grape accessions was done to determine the susceptibility or resistance of these accessions to DM.

The rare earth element(REE)geochemical composition of sediments from two cores were used to investigate the provenances of the Late Pleistocene to Holocene sediments of Cauvery delta,South *** chondrite-normalized REE patterns and bi-variant plots of Th/Co ***/Sc and La/Th ***/Yb indicated felsic source of ***-normalized plots of REE in both cores are almost parallel and exhibit similar fractionation ratio(Ce/Yb)_N of^***,persistence in REEs patterns implies either uniform source rocks and/or efficient homogenization of sediments during transportation and ***-normalized patterns of the samples show enrichment of light rare earth elements and flat pattern of heavy rare earth elements;such patterns imply dominance of felsic composition rocks in the ***,these samples show quite resemblance with Charnockites and Gneisses of Palani and Kodaikanal hill ***-normalized REE patterns of the Pleistocene sediments of Uttrangudi core show similar abundance,fractionation,and Eu anomaly values as of selected samples from Tertiary rocks near southwest part of the *** attribute the increased input from this region to the upliftment because of tectonic activity and lowering of sea level during the Pleistocene.

The study revealed the development of cost effective technology utilized as a practical tool for treatment of seasonal torrent and addressing erosion problems and land use *** was implemented in a small agricultural watershed located in foot hill of Shivalik,India,to assess its prediction capacity of runoff,peak runoff flow and sediment *** effective technology was evaluated at the event scale by using a database of hydrological,geomorphologic and land use data collected during a two-year *** the catchment,the gullies which are small to medium in size were treated with gully plugging by erecting loose boulder check dams and erected with different species of *** types of spur were constructed with vegetative reinforcement for channelization of stream *** sediments deposited in the first year at downstream was recorded 0.09-81.0 tons,while in the second year it was reduced up to 0.07-16.7 ***,up stream sediment deposition was recorded 1.0-72.0 tons and 0.37-13.1 tons in two consecutive *** D-50 analysis of sediment deposited was carried in three different places of torrent and it was found that deposited particle size material decreased after treatment undertaken in the torrent ***,the mechanical as well as vegetative measures helped in the channelization of water course towards the central line with the tune of 10-100 m,stabilization of torrent bed and reclamation of degraded land.

Ⅴ band photometry of three RS CVn stars,Ⅱ Peg, IM Peg and UX Ari, is carried out to study the physical properties of these variables. We verified the significant and regular optical photometric variability to be present in all three stars. The strong photometric variability and emission of Hα and Ca Ⅱ H ＆ K using high resolution optical spectroscopy with the Hanle Echelle Spectrograph （HESP）, which operates in conjunction with the Himalayan Chandra Telescope, verify the strong chromospheric activity which is present in RS CVn stars. The photometric studies of Ⅱ Peg, UX Ari and IM Peg were subjected to light curve analysis for spot parameters using a two-starspot model.

The role of forests is being actively considered under the agenda of REDD＋（Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation plus） aimed at reducing emissions related to changes in forest cover and forest quality. Forests in general have undergone negative changes in the past in the form of deforestation and degradation, while in some countries positive changes are reported in the form of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stock. The present study in the kashmir Himalayan forests is an effort to assess historical forest cover changes that took place from 1980 to 2009 and to predict the same for 2030 on the basis of past trend using geospatial modeling approach. Landsat data （Multispectral Scanner （MSS）, Thematic Mapper （TM） and Enhanced Thematic Mapper （ETM＋）） was used for the years 1980, 199o and （2001, 2009） respectively and change detection analysis between the dates was performed. The maps generated were validated through ground truthing. The study area （3375.62 km^2） from 1980-2009 has uffered deforestation and forest degradation of about 126 km^2 and 239.02 km^2 respectively which can be claimed under negative options of REDD＋, while as the area that experienced no change （1514 km^2） can be claimed under conservation. A small area （23.31 km^2） observed as positive change can be claimed under positive options. The projected estimates of forest cover for 2030 showed increased deforestation and forest degradation on the basis of trend analysis using Cellular Automata （CA） Markov modeling. Despite the fact that country as a whole has registered a net positive change in the past few decades, but there are regions like kashmir region of western Himalaya which have constantly undergoing deforestation as well as degradation in the past few decades.

The CCD photometric observations of open star cluster M37(NGC 2099) were carried out up to a limiting magnitude of V ～ 20 in both B and V filters to search for variable stars using a 2k×4k CCD and the 1.3 m telescope at the Vainu Bapu Observatory, Kavalur.A total of 314 stars were in the first observing run, out of which 60 were identified as *** out of the identified 60 variables are classified as W UMa binary *** model fitting, we used PHOEBE based on the W-D code to estimate the physical parameters of these newly detected W UMa binaries that theoretically best match the observed light curves.
