Molecular dynamics of amorphous pharmaceutical fenofibrate studied by broadband dielectric spectroscopy

Fenofibrate is mainly used to reduce cholesterol level in patients at risk of cardiovascular disease. Thermal transition study with the help of differential scanning calorimetry （DsC） shows that the aforesaid active pharmaceutical ingredient （API） is a good glass former. Based on our DsC study, the molecular dynamics of this API has been carried out by broadband dielectric spectroscopy （BDs） covering wide temperature and frequency ranges. Dielectric measurements of amorphous fenofibrate were per- formed after its vitrification by fast cooling from a few degrees above the melting point （Tm=354.11 K） to deep glassy state. The sample does not show any crystallization tendency during cooling and reaches the glassy state. The temperature dependence of the structural relaxation has been fitted by single Vogel- Fulcher-Tamman （VFT） equation. From VFT fit, glass transition temperature （Tg） was estimated as 250.56 K and fragility （m） was determined as 94.02. This drug is classified as a fragile glass former. Deviations of experimental data from Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts （KWW） fits on high-frequency flank of α-peak indicate the presence of an excess wing in fenofibrate. Based on Ngai＇s coupling model, we identified the excess wing as true Johari-Goldstein （JG） process. Below the glass transition temperature one can clearly see a secondary relaxation （γ） with an activation energy of 32.67 kJ/mol.

Reactive oxygen species are the intermediates that are formed during the normal metabolic process which are effectively neutralized by the antioxidant system of the *** imbalance in this neutralization process causes oxidative stress which has been implicated as one of the cause in diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, cardiovascular disorders, cancer etc. Research has enabled the use of antioxidants as therapeutic agents in the treatment of various diseases. Literature also puts forth the negative effects of using antioxidants in the treatment of diseases. This review is a compilation of both the beneficial and detrimental effects of use of antioxidants in the treatment of diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and oral diseases.

Early warning system for shallow landslides using rainfall threshold and slope stability analysis

A combined cluster and regression analysis were performed for the first time to identify rainfall threshold that triggers landslide events in Amboori, Kerala, India. Amboori is a tropical area that is highly vulnerable to landslides. The 2, 3, and 5-day antecedent rainfall data versus daily rainfall was clustered to identify a cluster of critical events that could potentially trigger landslides. Further, the cluster of critical events was utilized for regression analysis to develop the threshold equations. The 5-day antecedent(xvariable) vs. daily rainfall(y-variable) provided the best fit to the data with a threshold equation of y = 80.7-0.1981 x. The intercept of the equation indicates that if the 5-day antecedent rainfall is zero, the minimum daily rainfall needed to trigger the landslide in the Amboori region would be 80.7 mm. The negative coefficient of the antecedent rainfall indicates that when the cumulative antecedent rainfall increases, the amount of daily rainfall required to trigger monsoon landslide decreases. The coefficient value indicates that the contribution of the 5-day antecedent rainfall is～20% to the landslide trigger threshold. The slope stability analysis carried out for the area, using Probabilistic Infinite slope Analysis Model(PIsA-m), was utilized to identify the areas vulnerable to landslide in the region. The locations in the area where past landslides have occurred demonstrate lower Factors of safety(Fs) in the slope stability analysis. Thus, rainfall threshold analysis together with the Fs values from slope stability can be suitable for developing a simple, cost-effective, and comprehensive early-warning system for shallow landslides in Amboori and similar regions.

super 304 H austenitic stainless steel with 3% of copper posses excellent creep strength and corrosion resistance, which is mainly used in heat exchanger tubing of the boiler. Heat exchangers are used in nuclear power plants and marine vehicles which are intended to operate in chloride rich offshore environment. Chloride stress corrosion cracking is the most likely life limiting failure with austenitic stainless steel tubing. Welding may worsen the stress corrosion cracking susceptibility of the material. stress corrosion cracking susceptibility of super 304 H parent metal and gas tungsten arc(GTA) welded joints were studied by constant load tests in 45% boiling Mg Cl2 solution. stress corrosion cracking resistance of super 304 H stainless steel was deteriorated by GTA welding due to the formation of susceptible microstructure in the HAZ of the weld joint and the residual stresses. The mechanism of cracking was found to be anodic path cracking, with transgranular nature of crack propagation. Linear relationships were derived to predict the time to failure by extrapolating the rate of steady state elongation.

The idea of using ultrashort X-ray pulses to obtain images of single proteins frozen in time has fascinated and inspired *** was one of the arguments for building X-ray free-electron *** to theory,the extremely intense pulses provide sufficient signal to dispense with using crystals as an amplifier,and the ultrashort pulse duration permits capturing the diffraction data before the sample inevitably *** was first demonstrated on biological samples a decade ago on the giant *** then,a large collaboration has been pushing the limit of the smallest sample that can be *** ability to capture snapshots on the timescale of atomic vibrations,while keeping the sample at room temperature,may allow probing the entire conformational phase space of *** we show the first observation of an X-ray diffraction pattern from a single protein,that of Escherichia coli GroEL which at 14 nm in diameter is the smallest biological sample ever imaged by X-rays,and demonstrate that the concept of diffraction before destruction extends to single *** the pattern,it is possible to determine the approximate orientation of the *** experiment demonstrates the feasibility of ultrafast imaging of single proteins,opening the way to single-molecule time-resolved studies on the femtosecond timescale.

As land cover,urban settlement represents the most profound alteration of the natural environment（in the flows of energy,water,and materials）through the imposition of structures,buildings,paved surfaces,and compacted bare soils on the earth’s *** mere existence of built features in a urban settlement alters the incoming solar energy,the rainwater from the clouds,and the wind to different paths,leading to pollution and biodiversity *** most such changes or environmental impacts are often seen at the spatial scale of a field or a homestead,these discrete changes reach a global dimension by patchwork addition,in a process identified as globally cumulative（Turner et al.1990b）.India lost about 1.5 million ha of land to urban growth from 1955 to 1985,and a further 0.8 million ha added by the year *** percentage of people in urban areas has been growing,the size of large settlements has been increasing enormously,their nature has been changing,and to some extent urban and rural areas have become less distinct particularly in the metro *** impacts occur within cities,around cities,downwind and downvalley,and even long distances *** of the impacts of urbanization with a global dimension is the emissions of *** of methane in the atmosphere is increasing *** strong ability to absorb infrared radiation,combined with its relatively short atmospheric lifetime of 10 years（as against 50-200 years for carbon dioxide）,makes its control an important opportunity for mitigation of climate change It is estimated that 525 Tg methane is emitted per year into the atmosphere from all natural and anthropogenic *** methane concentrations have been measured directly since1978 when the globally averaged value was 1.51 ***,methane concentration in the atmosphere is 1.72 ppmv,corresponding to an atmospheric reservoir of about 4,900 Tg（ITg=1012g）,and it is increasing at the rate of 14.617 ppmv per year（40 to 48

This manuscript deals with new class of almost unbiased ratio cum product estimators for the estimation of population mean of the study variable by using the known values auxiliary variable. The bias and mean squared error of proposed estimators are obtained. An empirical study is carried out to assess the efficiency of proposed estimators over the existing estimators with the help of some known natural populations and it shows that the proposed estimators are almost unbiased and it perform better than the existing estimators.

Effect of piperine on the epididymis of adult male rats

Aim： To study the effect of piperine on the epididymal antioxidant system of adult male rats. Methods： Adult male rats were orally administered piperine at doses of 1 mg/kg, 10 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg body weight each day for 30 consecutive days. Twenty-four hours after the last treatment, the rats were weighed and killed with ether and the epididymis was dissected from the bodies. sperm collected from the cauda region of the epididymis was used for the assessment of its count, motility and viability. Caput, corpus and cauda regions of the epididymis were separated and homogenized separately to obtain 10 % homogenates. The supernatants were used for the assays of sialic acid, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, lipid peroxidation and hydrogen peroxide generation. Results： Body weight of the piperine-treated rats remained unchanged. The weights of the caput, corpus and cauda regions of the epididymis significantly decreased at dose of 100 mg/kg. Epididymal sperm count and motility decreased at 10 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg, and sperm viability decreased significantly at 100 mg/kg. sialic acid levels in the epididymis decreased significantly at 100 mg/kg while significant decrease in the cauda region alone was observed at 10 mg/kg. A significant decline in the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase, along with an increase in hydrogen peroxide generation and lipid peroxidation were observed at 10 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg. Conclusion： Piperine caused a decrease in the activity of antioxidant enzymes and sialic acid levels in the epididymis and thereby increased reactive oxygen species levels that could damage the epididymal environment and sperm function.
