The migratory locust Locusta migratoria(Orthoptera,Acrididae)is one of the most important pests due to its extensive and severe damage to crops in large parts of Africa and *** and ecologically natural products such as bota nical insecticides are emergi ng can didates for replaceme nt of usually applied chemical *** crude methanolic extract of Pergularia tomentosa(PME)was investigated for their toxicity and physiological aspects on *** *** showed that treatment of newly emerged fourth and fifth instar nymphs resulted in significant mortality and significant repellent activity with an LC50 value of 0.18 and 0.38%,respectively,after seven days of *** PME toxicity was also dem on strated by histopathological cha nges in the alime ntary canal resulting in con siderable disorganization and severe damage of the caeca and proventriculus *** extract induced cellular immune reactions which manifested by a significant decrease in the number of the differential haemocyte counts(prohemocytes and plasmatocytes)and important cell *** of biochemical analyses showed that the PME reduced the activity of acetylcholinesterase and induced the glutathione *** neurotoxic effect was confirmed by the histological alterations in the brain structure,particularly in the neurosecretory cells showing typical signs of cell necrosis.

Dear Editor,We report the cases of three siblings with gyrate atrophy(GA)of the choroid and retina with foveoschisis,anterior subcapsular cataracts,and capsular bag *** is a rare autosomal recessive degenerative disorder of the choroid and *** one-third of all reported cases are from Finland where the incidence is estimated to be around 1:50000 whereas the theoretical global incidence is only 1:1500000[1].

Objective: To explore anti-inflammatory activities of organic extract and its semi-purified fractions(ethanol, acetone, methanol/dichloromethane) from the Mediterranean gorgonian Eunicella singularis. Methods: The anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities were evaluated, using the carrageenan-induced rat paw edema model and the acetic acid writhing test in mice. The gastroprotective activity was determined using HCl/Et OH induced gastric ulcers in rats. The purification and structure elucidation of compound(s) from the more effective fraction were determined by chromatographic and spectroscopic methods and in comparison with data reported in the literature. Results: The fraction F-Et OH showed an important antiinflammatory activity associated with significant analgesic and gastroprotective properties. The purification and structure elucidation of compound(s) from this fraction lead to the identification of one diterpenoid and four sterols. Conclusions: These results suggested that components from the active fraction can be used to treat various anti-inflammatory diseases.

Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers and Polychlorobiphenyls in Fish from the Ionian Sea (Western Mediterranean)

This study reports on the accumulation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs) in the muscle tissue of 11 species of fish from the Ionian Sea (Western Mediterranean). The results are consistent with previous studies that have reported now-generalized contamination by PCBs of the Mediterranean marine environment, as well as widespread diffusion of emerging contaminants such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The Western Mediterranean Sea, from which the 11 fish species were collected, receives a heavy pollutant input from the urban and industrial areas along its coasts. Higher values of PCBs (average over 1.5 mg/kg f.w.) were observed in pelagic top predators (little tuna, bluefin tuna and swordfish). These same species also showed higher levels of PBDEs, averaging above 0.5 ng/g f.w. This puts a few fish species at the top of the food chain—such as bluefin tuna and swordfish—at particular risk, and the importance of these species in the human diet suggests the need for particular care in our food choices.

Phytases belong to the class of phosphohydrolases that begin the step-wise hydrolysis of phosphates from phytates. Phytates are a derivative of myo-inositol, which is the primary storage form of organic phosphorus in plant cells. Phytase has been used globally to diminish phosphorus pollution and to enhance nutrition in monogastrics. In this review, the classification, sources, and diversity of microbial phytases, and their practical applications, as well as supplementation of the soil with transgenic and wild types of microbial strains, which can release phytase to enhance phosphorus availability for plant uptake and reduce the need for fertilizers, are discussed. The overexpressed microbial phytases in transgenic plants enhance the growth capacity of co-cultivated plants and can therefore be employed in agricultural and biotechnological practices, such as intercropping. The introduction of phytases into the soil for improved plant growth and enhanced crop yield can be accomplished without extra cost. A diverse group of photoautotrophic microalgae can synthesize phytase and will likely be useful in many human food and animal industries.

Polarization Properties Study of an Apodized FBG Filter

Spectrum properties of Apodized Fiber Bragg Gratings (AFBG) are well studied when it is question to reduce transmission side-lobes. Otherwise, the polarization properties of these gratings are little reported once evaluating system performances. In this paper, we theoretically analyze, for the transmission spectrum, the Polarization Dependent Loss (PDL) and the Differential Group Delay (DGD) of an AFBG written into Single Mode Fiber (SMF). Based on the Coupled Mode theory, we study the evolution of these polarization properties on the function of wavelength versus the grating parameters. Especially, we focused on the PDL and DGD maximum amplitudes. We demonstrate that these maximums evolve with grating length and refractive index modulation but converge to constant values versus birefringence.

Adalimumab efficacy in enteropathic spondyloarthritis: A 12-mo observational multidisciplinary study

AIM To report adalimumab(Ada) efficacy on articulargastrointestinal disease and health-related quality of life(HRQo L) in patients with enteropathic spondyloarthritis(ES).METHODS A cohort of 52 patients with ES was evaluated in the departments of gastroenterology and internal medicine. At baseline, all patients underwent assessment by an integrated gastro-rheumatologic evaluation of articular and gastrointestinal activity, as well patient reported outcomes(PROs) of the HRQo L questionnaires. After this integrated evaluation and following a specific working flowchart, the Ada anti-tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-inhibitor was assigned to a cohort of 30 patients and its clinical efficacy was evaluated at baseline and after 6-mo and 12-mo treatment by the following tests:(1) Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity ScoreC-Reactive Protein(ASDAS-CRP); Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index(BASDAI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index(BASFI) and Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrology Index(BASMI) for articular activity;(2) Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire(IBDQ), Crohn's Disease Activity Index(CDAI) and partial Mayo(p Mayo) score for gastrointestinal symptoms and activity; and(3) Health Assessment Questionnaire(HAQ), Patient Global Assessment(PGA) and Short Form-36 health survey(SF-36) questionnaires for PROs of the HRQo *** Integrated evaluation and management of the patients affected by ES, carried out simultaneously by a gastroenterologist and a rheumatologist, allowed clinicians to choose the optimal therapeutic strategy. In a cohort of 30 ES patients affected by active articular and gastrointestinal disease, or axial active articular inflammation, Ada led to fast and sustained improvement of both articular and gastrointestinal disease activities. Numerical Study of an Integrated Collector Storage Solar Water Heater

In this paper, we propose a numerical study of an integrated collector storage solar water heater. The numerical resolution of the governing equations was carried out using a commercial CFD code FLUENT 6.2 which is based on a finite volume method. The discussion is related firstly to the validation of the CFD model. Then, the effect of the absorber surface selectivity was investigated. The mean water temperature profile over time is studied for a day of May, from 6 am to 6 pm, to highlight this change’s effect on water heating process. Streamlines and temperature contours were also investigated for a cross section of the solar water heater. The effect of this change on the SWH efficiency was also studied.
