The degradation of ethinylestradiol (EE, an orally bio-active estrogen) in an aqueous-methanolic solution using a Ti/TiO2 thin-film electrode and UV radiation (a photoelectrocatalytic system) was evaluated. Hence, HPLC/UV analysis shows that EE (at 0.34 mmol) is totally consumed after 30 minutes of exposure to the photoelectrocatalytic system in the presence of Na2SO4 (0.1 mol·L-1) and with an applied bias potential of +1.0 V versus the Ag/AgCl reference electrode. Moreover, monitoring by direct infusion electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and SPME-GC/ MS (solid phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) reveals that apparently no degradation products are formed under these conditions. Hence, this study demonstrates that the photoelectrocatalytic system can be efficiently used to promote the complete degradation (and likely mineralization) of this hormone under these conditions.

Objective: Sexual violence affects women of all ages but, more commonly, children and adolescents. This study aimed to identify the extent to which services are being provided at the hospitals responsible for the emergency care of children and adolescents who have suffered sexual violence and to determine whether there is any difference in the provision of such services as a function of the victim’s age. Method: This cross-sectional study investigated differences in the care received by female children and adolescents who are victims of sexual violence in a capital city, comparing the treatment given to girls under 15 with that given to adolescents of 15 to 19 years of age. The data were extracted from the State Department of Health database between 01/01/2012 and 31/12/2016. Results: Children under 15 were much less likely to receive prophylaxis against HIV, sexually transmitted infections and hepatitis B, with the number of adolescent girls treated adequately corresponding to between twice and almost three times the number of children treated prophylactically. Only 10% of girls under 15 received emergency contraception. Conclusion: The lack of standard care established by the Ministry of Health highlights the need for urgent debates both locally and probably throughout the country, as the situation may be similar in other regions of the country.

本研究旨在考察当代中国三代同堂家庭中父母和祖辈的协同教养观念。研究选取10个家庭中的8位祖辈和8位父母,采用焦点小组访谈和个人访谈的方式搜集数据。研究结果表明:父亲与母亲平等地分担子女(10—13岁)的教养责任,祖辈在养育孙辈方面有从属的作用;祖辈的溺爱和滞后的养育方式是父母和祖辈间产生分歧的主要原因,但这种分歧可以通过沟通和支持来调和,并且父母和祖辈都认为沟通和支持是协同教养的关键。因此,在三代同堂家庭教育方面应加强父母(尤其是父亲)和祖辈对协同教养重要性的认识,明确祖辈“溺爱”界限,确保“帮忙不添乱”,以此减少祖辈和孩子父母之间的养育冲突,有效提升儿童的身心发展水平和幸福感。

Predicting adolescent perfectionism: The role of socio-demographic traits, personal relationships, and media

BACKGROUND The present study investigated perfectionism from the bioecological model perspective as a multidimensional construct manifested in forms of excessively high personal standards,exaggerated worries about personal mistakes,doubt in one’s performance,oversized order and organization emphasis,and the importance of parental valuations and expectations.AIM To investigate the relation between perfectionism;the quality of family,peer,and college relationships;and media usage and content interests.METHODS The research was implemented in 2020 with 203 students(134 female,66%)aged 18-25 years,enrolled at the University of Osijek in Croatia.The questionnaire had five parts:A)sociodemographic data;B)the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale;C)the“general life satisfaction”and“current situational life satisfaction”scale;D)family,peer,and college relationships quality scale;and E)media usage and content interests scale.All of the implemented instruments showed satisfactory reliability.A hierarchical regression analysis was implemented with the aim of establishing significant perfectionism predictors.RESULTS Age and gender were significant predictors of perfectionism.Participants with lower family relationship quality reported higher parental expectations and complaining as well as significantly higher doubts in personal performance and concern about mistakes.Similarly,a lower peer relationship quality predicted doubts in personal performance and stronger concerns about mistakes.The quality of college relationships positively predicted higher perfectionist personal standards and organization.General life satisfaction predicted higher concerns about mistakes,while current situational life satisfaction predicted higher levels of perfectionist organization.Media usage intensity had no significant effect.Adolescent interest in information-educational media predicted higher personal standards as well as concern about mistakes and organization.Higher interests in entertainment media content predicted more concern about mista

Interactions among living beings are the structuring basis of ecosystems,and studies of networks allow us to identify the patterns and consistency of such interactions.Antagonistic networks reflect the energy flow of communities,and identifying network structure and the biological aspects that influence its stability is crucial to understanding ecosystem functioning.We used antagonistic anuran interactions-predator-prey and host-parasite-to assess structural patterns and to identify the key anuran species structuring these networks.We tested whether anuran body-size and life-habit are related to their roles in these networks.We collected individuals of 9 species of anurans from an area of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil and identified their prey and helminth parasites.We used network(modularity,specialization,and nestedness)and centrality metrics(degree,closeness,and betweenness)to identify the role of anuran species in both networks.We then evaluated whether anuran body-size or life-habit were related to anuran centrality using generalized linear mixed models.The networks formed specialized interactions in compartments composed by key species from different habits.In our networks,anurans with rheophilic and cryptozoic habit are central in predator-prey networks,and those with larger body size and arboreal and cryptozoic habit in the host-parasite network.This study represents a step towards a better understanding of the influential factors that affect the structure of anuran antagonist networks,as well as to recognize the functioning roles of anuran species.

The incidence of Mycobacterium avium complex pulmonary disease (MACPD) has been globally increasing. The present study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of clinical characteristics and treatment response among patients in the Amazon region of Brazil and conduct a retrospective cohort study at a prominent referral hospital in the State of Par, Brazil, from 2012 to 2020. The M. avium group represented 58.9% of cases, followed by M. intracellulare (35.7%), M. colombiense (3.6%), and M. chimaera (1.8%). The majority of patients (73.2%) were female and with an average age of 63 years. Primary clinical manifestations included persistent cough and sputum production. The Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) averaged 2.47, with 36.3% of patients having a CCI score equal to higher than 3. Notably, over 70% of patients had received treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis before initiating treatment for MAC infection. The fibrocavitary radiologic form was the most prevalent (55.4%), frequently exhibiting a bilateral distribution (53.6%). Antimicrobial susceptibility revealed a significant prevalence of MAC resistance to drugs in the therapeutic regimen. Despite this, most of the patients experienced clinical improvement (50%). In conclusion, this study highlights a higher prevalence of MAC infections among middle-aged women, with a history of pulmonary tuberculosis treatment and presenting the fibrocavitary radiological form was predominant.

Survival and comorbidities in lung cancer patients:Evidence from administrative claims data in Germany

Lung cancer is the most common cancer type worldwide and has the highest and second highest mortality rate for men and women respectively in Germany.Yet,the role of comorbid illnesses in lung cancer patient prognosis is still debated.We analyzed administrative claims data from one of the largest statutory health insurance(SHI)funds in Germany,covering close to 9 million people(11%of the national population);observation period was from 2005 to 2019.Lung cancer patients and their concomitant diseases were identified by ICD-10-GM codes.Comorbidities were classified according to the Charlson Comorbidity Index(CCI).Incidence,comorbidity prevalence and survival are estimated considering sex,age at diagnosis,and place of residence.Kaplan Meier curves with 95%confidence intervals were built in relation to common comorbidities.We identified 70,698 lung cancer incident cases in the sample.Incidence and survival figures are comparable to official statistics in Germany.Most prevalent comorbidities are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD)(36.7%),followed by peripheral vascular disease(PVD)(18.7%),diabetes without chronic complications(17.4%),congestive heart failure(CHF)(16.5%)and renal disease(14.7%).Relative to overall survival,lung cancer patients with CHF,cerebrovascular disease(CEVD)and renal disease are associated with largest drops in survival probabilities(9%or higher),while those with PVD and diabetes without chronic complications with moderate drops(7%or lower).The study showed a negative association between survival and most common comorbidities among lung cancer patients,based on a large sample for Germany.Further research needs to explore the individual effect of comorbidities disentangled from that of other patient characteristics such as cancer stage and histology.

Clear and data-driven bioregionalizations can provide a framework to test hypotheses and base biodiversity conservation.Here we used occurrence and abundance data in combination with objective analytical methods to propose two bioregionalization schemes for tree species of the Cerrado and the Pantanal in South America.We also evaluated the contribution of three sets of determinants of the occurrence-and abundance-based subregions.We compiled data on tree species composition from 894 local assemblages based on species occurrences,and from 658 local assemblages based on species abundances.We used an unconstrained community-level modelling approach and clustering techniques to identify and map tree subregions for the occurrence and the abundance data sets,separately.Hierarchical clustering analyses were conducted to investigate floristic affinities between the subregions and to map broader floristic regions.We used multinomial logistic regression models,deviance partitioning,and rank-sum tests to assess the main subregion correlates.We identified 18 occurrence-and four abundance-based subregions in the Cerrado-Pantanal.The hierarchical classifications grouped the occurrence-based subregions into nine floristic zones and abundance-based subregions into two broad floristic zones.Variation in subregions were explained mainly by environmental factors and spatial structure in both occurrence and abundance data sets.The occurrence-and abundance-based subregions are complementary approaches to disentangle macroecological patterns and to plan conservation efforts in the Cerrado and the Pantanal.Our findings based on occurrence data revealed more complex and interdigitated boundaries between subregions of tree species than previously reported.The environment,historical stability,and human effects act in a synergetic way on the distribution of the subregions.Finally,the relevance of contemporary environmental factors to the subregion patterns we found alert us to the profound impact global warming may have on the spatial orga

The municipality of Boa Nova,in northeastern Brazil,is in an ecotone zone between the Caatinga and Atlantic Forest phytogeographic domains.The transition phytophysiognomy is seasonal forest and known locally as mata de cipó.In these phytophysiognomies there are lajedos,which are rock outcrops colonized by vegetation welladapted to extreme microclimatic variation and vegetation diversity is affected by the vegetation types of the surrounding areas.Due to the singularity of these environments and the relevance of floristic studies for conservation,this work aimed to identify the species richness and compare the similarity of the flora on four rock outcrops in Boa Nova.The flora was surveyed during exploratory walks along lajedos between 2016 and 2019.In total,162 species were identified on the Boa Nova outcrops.The flora has a composition and structure similar to semiarid outcrops,as well as endemic species that also occur in surrounding phytophysiomies.Despite the proximity,a similarity index revealed there is floristic dissimilarity between the areas.Nine new occurrences were recorded for the region,five species are threatened with extinction(Aosa gilgiana,Ficus cyclophylla,Hippeastrum stigmovittatum,Pleroma caatingae and Trixis pruskii),and 43 species are common in anthropogenic areas.This reinforces the importance of actions to conserve these areas.

Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction(HFrEF)and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)are two common comorbidities that share similar pathophysiological mechanisms.There is a growing interest in the potential of targeted therapies to improve outcomes in patients with coexisting HFrEF and NAFLD.This manuscript reviews current and potential therapies for patients with coexisting HFrEF and NAFLD.Pharmacological therapies,including angiotensinconverting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin receptor blockers,mineralocorticoids receptor antagonist,and sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors,have been shown to reduce fibrosis and fat deposits in the liver.However,there are currently no data showing the beneficial effects of sacubitril/valsartan,ivabradine,hydralazine,isosorbide nitrates,digoxin,or beta blockers on NAFLD in patients with HFrEF.This study highlights the importance of considering HFrEF and NAFLD when developing treatment plans for patients with these comorbidities.Further research is needed in patients with coexisting HFrEF and NAFLD,with an emphasis on novel therapies and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach for managing these complex comorbidities.
