AIM: To assess the anti-inflammatory effect of the probiotic Bifidobacterium lactis (B. lactis) in an adoptive transfer model of colitis. METHODS: Donor and recipient mice received either B. lactis or bacterial culture medium as control (deMan Rogosa Sharpe) in drinking water for one week prior to transfer of a mix of naive and regulatory T cells until sacrifice. RESULTS: All recipient mice developed signs of colonic inflammation, but a significant reduction of weight loss was observed in B. lactis-fed recipient mice compared to control mice. Moreover, a trend toward a diminution of mucosal thickness and attenuated epithelial damage was revealed. Colonic expression of pro-inflammatory and T cell markers was significantly reduced in B. lactis-fed recipient mice compared to controls. Concomitantly, forkhead box protein 3, a marker of regulatory T cells, was significantly up-regulated by B. lactis. CONCLUSION: Daily oral administration of B. lactis was able to reduce inflammatory and T cells mediators and to promote regulatory T cells specific markers in a mouse model of colitis.

The creation of a suitable wide area monitoring system(WAMS) is widely recognized as an essential aspect of delivering a power system that will be secure,efficient and sustainable for the foreseeable future. In Great Britain(GB), the deployment of the first WAMS to monitor the entire power system in real time was the responsibility of the visualization of real time system dynamics using enhanced monitoring(VISOR) project. The core scope of the VISOR project is to deploy this WAMS and demonstrate how WAMS applications can in the near term provide system operators and planners with clear, actionable information. This paper presents the wider scope of the VISOR project and the GB wide WAMS that has been deployed. Furthermore, the paper describes some of the WAMS applications that have been deployed and provides examples of the measurement device performance issues that have been encountered during the project.

BACKGROUND Colonoscopy is considered a valid primary screening tool for colorectal cancer(CRC). The decreasing risk of CRC observed in patients undergoing colonoscopy is correlated with the adenoma detection rate(ADR). Due to the fact that screening programs usually start from the age of 50, very few data are available on the risk of adenoma between 40 and 49 years. However, the incidence of CRC is increasing in young populations and it is not uncommon in routine practice to detect adenomas or even advanced neoplasia during colonoscopy in patients under 50 *** To compare the ADR and advanced neoplasia detection rate(ANDR) according to age in a large series of patients during routine *** All consecutive patients who were scheduled for colonoscopy were *** criteria were as follows: patients scheduled for partial colonoscopy or interventional colonoscopy(for stent insertion or stenosis dilation).Colonoscopies were performed in our unit by a team of 30 gastroenterologists in2016. We determined the ADR and ANDR in each age group in the whole population and in the population with an average risk of CRC(excluding patients with personal or family history of advanced adenoma or cancer).RESULTS6027 colonoscopies were performed in patients with a median age of 57 years(range, 15-96). The ADR and ANDR were 28.6% and 9.7%, respectively, in the whole population. When comparing patients aged 40-44(n = 382) and 45-49 years (n = 515), a strong increase in all parameters from 45 years was observed, with the ADR rising from 9.7% in patients aged 40-44 to 21.2% between 45 and 49(P <0.001) and the ANDR increasing from 3.1% in patients aged 40-44 to 6.4% in those aged 45-49 years(P < 0.03). With regard to patients aged 50-54(n = 849), a statistically significant increase in the ADR and ANDR was not observed between patients aged 45-49 and those aged 50-54 years. The Yellow-legged hornet, Vespa velutina , was accidentally introduced in France in 2004, and then spread rapidly through the French territory but also to adjacent European countries (Spain, Portugal, and Belgium). During summer and autumn, V. velutina workers hunt domestic honeybees, Apis mellifera, for feeding their larvae. The impact of this alien species is mainly economic, beekeepers experiencing heavy colony losses, but also ecological, V. velutina hunting other pollinators. In their year-round life cycle, nest initiation by single queen during spring is the critical stage. In invaded areas, spring queen trapping using food baits has been promoted by apicultural unions in order to limit V. velutina population expansion. The goals of this work were 1) to evaluate the yield of this method, 2) to identify appropriate sites for trapping, 3) to identify potential optimal climatic windows of capture, and 4) to quantify the impact on local entomofauna. Our results showed that water proximity enhances trapping but not beehives proximity, and that trapping is inefficient if average week temperatures are below 10°C. Although the trapping effect on biodiversity should be studied more carefully, spring queen trapping is highly questionable unless specific attractants could be proposed.

Total proteolytic, antitrypsic, amylase and lypolytic activity was studied on animals subjected to acute stress simulation. Acute stress results in the development of imbalance of protease inhibitors potential as well as in the increase of amylase and lipase activity in the pancreas of the rats. Prior melanin administration in acute stress leads to a decrease in the activity of amylase and lipase, and an increase of total activity of protease inhibitors, that demonstrates stress-protective melanin effect produced on the pancreas.

Using a Health Level 7 Interoperability Bus to Support Legacy Systems in the Health Domain

In order to reduce the effort in the integration and actualization of heterogeneous healthcare legacy systems that should share a common database, we propose the creation of an interoperability bus using the HL7 standard—the HL7Middleware. This interoperability bus is an intermediate layer responsible for the communication between a database, health information systems and medical equipment, called HL7Server. Connected systems use the HL7 messaging semantics to store and retrieve data from the database. We validate our approach with respect to two different criteria: performance and integration costs. Benchmark tests were executed with and without the use of HL7Middleware and with different network bandwidths. These results demonstrated that the performance of the interoperability bus is higher when compared to traditional database access for larger volumes of data and when the bandwidth of the user is considerably lower than the bandwidth of the connection between HL7Server and database. The overall development and deployment cost was considered low and the reusability degree of wrapper code was considered high, thus suggesting a progressive reduction of the integration costs of additional services and subsystems of an organization.
