Background and Aims:The results of basic research implicate the vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)family as a potential target of hepatopulmonary syndrome(HPS).However,the negative results of anti-angiogenetic therapy in clinical studies have highlighted the need for markers for HPS.Therefore,we aimed to determine whether VEGF family members and their receptors can be potential biomarkers for HPS through clinical and experimental studies.Methods:Clinically,patients with chronic liver disease from two medical centers were enrolled and examined for HPS.Patients were divided into HPS,intrapulmonary vascular dilation[positive contrast-enhanced echocardiography(CEE)and normal oxygenation]and CEE-negative groups.Baseline information and perioperative clinical data were compared between HPS and non-HPS patients.Serum levels of VEGF family members and their receptors were measured.In parallel,HPS rats were established by common bile duct ligation.Liver,lung and serum samples were collected for the evaluation of pathophysiologic changes,as well as the expression levels of the above factors.Results:In HPS rats,all VEGF family members and their receptors underwent significant changes;however,only soluble VEGFR1(sFlt-1)and the sFlt-1/placental growth factor(PLGF)ratio were changed in almost the same manner as those in HPS patients.Furthermore,through feature selection and internal and external validation,sFlt-1 and the sFlt-1/PLGF ratio were identified as the most important variables to distinguish HPS from non-HPS patients.Conclusions:Our results from animal and human studies indicate that sFlt-1 and the sFlt-1/PLGF ratio in serum are potential markers for HPS.

Background High dietary carbohydrates can spare protein in rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss)but may affect growth and health.Inulin,a prebiotic,could have nutritional and metabolic effects,along with anti-inflammatory properties in teleosts,improving growth and welfare.We tested this hypothesis in rainbow trout by feeding them a 100%plant-based diet,which is a viable alternative to fishmeal and fish oil in aquaculture feeds.In a two-factor design,we examined the impact of inulin(2%)as well as the variation in the carbohydrates(CHO)/plant protein ratio on rainbow trout.We assessed the influence of these factors on zootechnical parameters,plasma metabolites,gut microbiota,production of short-chain fatty acids and lactic acid,as well as the expression of free-fatty acid receptor genes in the mid-intestine,intermediary liver metabolism,and immune markers in a 12-week feeding trial.Results The use of 2%inulin did not significantly change the fish intestinal microbiota,but interestingly,the high CHO/protein ratio group showed a change in intestinal microbiota and in particular the beta diversity,with 21 bacterial genera affected,including Ralstonia,Bacillus,and 11 lactic-acid producing bacteria.There were higher levels of butyric,and valeric acid in groups fed with high CHO/protein diet but not with inulin.The high CHO/protein group showed a decrease in the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines(il1b,il8,and tnfa)in liver and a lower expression of the genes coding for tight-junction proteins in mid-intestine(tjp1a and tjp3).However,the 2%inulin did not modify the expression of plasma immune markers.Finally,inulin induced a negative effect on rainbow trout growth performance irrespective of the dietary carbohydrates.Conclusions With a 100%plant-based diet,inclusion of high levels of carbohydrates could be a promising way for fish nutrition in aquaculture through a protein sparing effect whereas the supplementation of 2%inulin does not appear to improve the use of CHO when combined with a 100%plant-based diet.

Some French public middle schools offer gifted students the opportunity to pursue their education in general classes,while benefiting from specific facilities within the framework of a dedicated educational program.In this study,we sought to identify and analyze the needs of these students as perceived by the headmaster of each middle school involved.The results highlight two main student needs,common to all these programs(uneasiness and difficulties in peer relationships)as well as needs specifically mentioned by some headmasters(non-adaptive behavior).

A Generic Model to Estimate Wheat LAI over Growing Season Regardless of the Soil-Type Background

It is valuable to develop a generic model that can accurately estimate the leaf area index(LAI)of wheat from unmanned aerial vehicle-based multispectral data for diverse soil backgrounds without any ground calibration.To achieve this objective,2 strategies were investigated to improve our existing random forest regression(RFR)model,which was trained with simulations from a radiative transfer model(PROSAIL).The 2 strategies consisted of(a)broadening the reflectance domain of soil background to generate training data and(b)finding an appropriate set of indicators(band reflectance and/or vegetation indices)as inputs of the RFR model.The RFR models were tested in diverse soils representing varying soil types in Australia.Simulation analysis indicated that adopting both strategies resulted in a generic model that can provide accurate estimation for wheat LAI and is resistant to changes in soil background.From validation on 2 years of field trials,this model achieved high prediction accuracy for LAI over the entire crop cycle(LAI up to 7 m^(2)m^(−2))(root mean square error(RMSE):0.23 to 0.89 m^(2)m^(−2)),including for sparse canopy(LAI less than 0.3 m^(2)m^(−2))grown on different soil types(RMSE:0.02 to 0.25 m^(2)m^(−2)).The model reliably captured the seasonal pattern of LAI dynamics for different treatments in terms of genotypes,plant densities,and water–nitrogen managements(correlation coefficient:0.82 to 0.98).With appropriate adaptations,this framework can be adjusted to any type of sensors to estimate various traits for various species(including but not limited to LAI of wheat)in associated disciplines,e.g.,crop breeding,precision agriculture,etc.

Optimized greenery configuration to mitigate urban heat:A decade systematic review

Urban vegetation is a nature-based solution for cooling cities.Under global warming and urban population growth,it is essential to optimize urban vegetation configuration in the urban area to bring maximum cooling benefit.This paper reviews 85 optimized urban vegetation configuration studies published from 2010 to 2020 to provide an insight into the most effective vegetation configuration for urban heat mitigation.Patterns and preferences in methods and the optimized greenery configurations are comprehensively analyzed.The results indicate that size,quantity,and layout of urban green space and the physiological characteristics and spatial arrangement of urban vegetation significantly influence their cooling effect.Additionally,two other research gaps were identified.First,more research needs to be done in southern hemisphere cities experiencing rapid urbanization and severe impacts of extreme weather.Second,a comprehensive method for quantifying interactions and cumulative effects of natural and artificial factors in the urban environment is required.Future study needs a holistic understanding of the interactive effects of vegetation spatial distribution on urban environment and climate for a more accurate analysis of optimal cooling greening layouts in large urban areas at multi-scales.

Vespa velutina nest distribution at a local scale： An 8-year survey of the invasive honeybee predator

Vespa velutina is an invasive species that was observed for the first time in France and Europe in 2004, which rapidly threatened domestic honeybees with active predation. For the first time in this study, we analyzed the distribution of V. velutina nests at a local scale to understand the pattern of nesting, and in 8 years of monitoring, a total of 528 nests were surveyed. With the exception of 2 years, the nests of V. velutina were randomly distributed within the monitored area, which suggested that intraspecific competition for nesting sites and/or food was unlikely. When the data for all years were combined, an aggregated distribution of nests at the seafront in the vicinity of the oyster farm and sportfishing activities was observed. This distribution suggested that seafood, attractive to vespids, might provide a valuable alternative food source that favored colony development. We also tested the effect of spring queen trapping of V. velutina on the distribution of nests in 2014, which was the year with the greatest number of colonies within the area; the position of the traps did not influence the distribution of the nests. For the first time, this study showed that （i） intraspecific competition was unlikely to be a mechanism for population regulation, （ii） some areas were more likely favored for hornet nests, and （iii） spring queen wasp trapping was inefficient as a method to limit the distribution of the V. velutina population.

E-commerce development in rural and remote areas of BRICS countries

E-commerce plays an essential role in modern trade today.It is expected that e-commerce volume amounted to 29 trillion USD in the world in 2017,and would grow with the spread of the Internet and information and communication technologies(ICTs).Brazil,Russia,India,China and South Africa(BRICS),together with many others,consider e-commerce a means to facilitate rapid,inclusive and sustainable economic growth,improving the living standards and alleviating poverty.This article examines areas for potential cooperation by BRICS countries in e-commerce development across rural and remote areas to fight poverty.It analyses the current state of e-commerce development in rural and remote areas in each of the BRICS countries,including cases of public and private initiatives to support it.The article also defines the opportunities which e-commerce brings to people living in rural and remote areas.Moreover,it evaluates the existing challenges and risks.The article concludes that despite the rapid e-commerce development in BRICS countries,and significant opportunities created,there are still issues of disproportionate e-commerce in varied regions and the lack of BRICS cooperation in this sphere.Based on a comparative and normative in-depth,systematic analysis,the article develops a set of recommendations for deepening BRICS countries'cooperation in the following areas:infrastructure in rural and remote regions;education;consumer protection;online dispute resolution;coordinated policy in the international scene,including representation of BRICS countries in international indexes,such as the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development(OECD)Digital Services Trade Restrictiveness Index(STRI).

Complement genetics,deficiencies,and disease associations

The complement system is a key component of innate immunity.More than 45 genes encoding the proteins of complement components or their isotypes and subu-nits,receptors,and regulators have been discovered.These genes are distributed throughout different chro-mosomes,with 19 genes comprising three significant complement gene clusters in the human genome.Ge-netic deficiency of any early component of the classical pathway(C1q,C1r/s,C2,C4,and C3)is associated with autoimmune diseases due to the failure of clearance of immune complexes(IC)and apoptotic materials,and the impairment of normal humoral response.Deficien-cies of mannan-binding lectin(MBL)and the early components of the alternative(factor D,properdin)and terminal pathways(from C3 onward components:C5,C6,C7,C8,C9)increase susceptibility to infections and their recurrence.While the association of MBL defi-ciency with a number of autoimmune and infectious disorders has been well established,the effects of the deficiency of other lectin pathway components(ficolins,MASPs)have been less extensively investigated due to our incomplete knowledge of the genetic background of such deficiencies and the functional activity of those components.For complement regulators and receptors,the consequences of their genetic deficiency vary de-pending on their specific involvement in the regulatory or signalling steps within the complement cascade and beyond.This article reviews current knowledge and concepts about the genetic load of complement com-ponent deficiencies and their association with diseases.An integrative presentation of genetic data with the latest updates provides a background to further inves-tigations of the disease association investigations of the complement system from the perspective of sys-tems biology and systems genetics.

With a rich variety of chemical energy sources and steep physical and chemical gradients,hydrothermal vent systems offer a range of habitats to support microbial life.Cultivation-dependent and independent studies have led to an emerging view that diverse microorganisms in deep-sea hydrothermal vents live their chemolithoautotrophic,heterotrophic,or mixotrophic life with versatile metabolic strategies.Biogeochemical processes are mediated by microorganisms,and notably,processes involving or coupling the carbon,sulfur,hydrogen,nitrogen,and metal cycles in these unique ecosystems.Here,we review the taxonomic and physiological diversity of microbial prokaryotic life from cosmopolitan to endemic taxa and emphasize their significant roles in the biogeochemical processes in deep-sea hydrothermal vents.According to the physiology of the targeted taxa and their needs inferred from meta-omics data,the media for selective cultivation can be designed with a wide range of physicochemical conditions such as temperature,pH,hydrostatic pressure,electron donors and acceptors,carbon sources,nitrogen sources,and growth factors.The application of novel cultivation techniques with real-time monitoring of microbial diversity and metabolic substrates and products are also recommended.

Spatial distribution of Vespa velutina individuals hunting at domestic honeybee hives： heterogeneity at a local scale

Since its recent introduction into Europe, the yellow-legged hornet, Vespa velutina, has become a major predator of the domestic honeybee, Apis mellifera, but little is known about its hunting behavior. We studied V. velutina hunting behavior by a capture- mark-recapture procedure in an experimental apiary. A total of 360 hornets were captured and tagged, and we determined：（i） the number of hornets visiting the apiary and the changes in time, （ii） the average number of individual visits per half-day and the time elapsed between consecutive recaptures, and （iii） the individual and global distribution of the hornets in the apiary. More than 50% of the marked hornets were recaptured at least once, this increased to 74% in considering the first marked individuals. We estimated 350 hornets visiting the patch daily with at least 1 visit per half-day. The number of marked hornets decreased over time while the number of unmarked ones increased, suggesting a turnover of individuals. The reduction of the delay between consecutive visits indicates that hornets became more efficient over time. Most of the hornets （88%） were recaptured in front of different hives but, overall, the global distribution was aggregative. Hornets were mainly recaptured in front of 1 hive which was neither the smallest nor the biggest colony, suggesting that the major cue used by hornets is not the amount of food. We hypothesize that the defensive behavior of the honeybee colony could explain our results which may be promising to further studies.
