An integrated approach for dynamic traffic routing and ramp metering using sliding mode control

The problem of designing integrated traffic control strategies for highway networks with the use of route guidance, ramp metering is considered. The highway network is simulated using a first order macroscopic model called LWR model which is a mathematical traffic flow model that formulates the relationships among traffic flow characteristics in terms of density, flow, and mean speed of the traffic stream. An integrated control algorithm is designed to solve the proposed problem, based on the inverse control technique and variable structure control（super twisting sliding mode）. Three case studies have been tested in the presence of an on-ramp at each alternate route and where there is a capacity constraint in the network. In the first case study, there is no capacity constraint at either upstream or downstream of the alternate routes and the function of the proposed algorithm is only to balance the traffic flow on the alternate routes. In the second case study, there is capacity constraint at downstream of alternate routes. The proposed algorithm aims to avoid congestion on the main road and balance the traffic flow on the alternate routes. In the last case study, there is capacity constraint at upstream of alternate routes. The objective of proposed algorithm is to avoid congestion on the main road and to balance the traffic flow on the alternate routes. The obtained results show that the proposed algorithms can establish user equilibrium between two alternate routes even when the on-ramps, located at alternate routes, have different traffic demands.

This paper presents the STAMP （system-theoretic accident modeling and processes） accident model, based on systems theory, and describes its application in the context of risk prevention related to the remediation of contaminated sediments. The implementation of the model is described, and results are presented both in methodological and technical terms. The goal of this article is to emphasize the need of new approaches to take into account hazards and accidents within socio-technical systems.

The goal of this article is dual： first, introducing a new model of accident named STAMP （systems-theoretic accident modeling and processes）; then applying the model to an innovative process for the treatment of contaminated substances and the re-use of treated substances. This article is a demonstration for a need of a new tool to take into account hazards and safety within socio-technical systems.

Analysis of a Tropical Warm Spring Microbiota Using 16S rRNA Metabarcoding

The Ikogosi Warm Spring is a unique ecological niche in Western Nigeria with an average temperature and pH of 38°C and 5.8 respectively. It mixes with an adjacent cold spring (28°C & pH 7.6), about 100 meters from source, yielding a confluence body of water of 32°C and pH 7.7. To explore the bacterial community structure of this uncommon environment and to scan for potentially useful bacteria, metagenomes extracted directly from five samples (source and mid-point of warm spring;source and midpoint of cold spring, and the confluence) were analyzed. Using the MiSeq Illumina next generation sequencing protocols, the V3-V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene pool was sequenced and analyzed by QIIME (Quantitative Insights into Microbial Ecology) and R software. At least 11% (47,446) of all the sequences were unknown to any of the databases employed. Bacterial diversity and abundance at the source of both springs were extremely low, accounting for less than 0.07% of the total sequence reads at the confluence, 100 m downstream. In contrast to the highly diversified mesophilic confluence community where 21 different phyla were identified, only 4 and 5 phyla were recovered from the source-point of the warm spring and cold spring respectively. The most prevalent phyla in all samples were members of the versatile Proteobacteria (35% - 50% relative abundance), and the hardy Firmicutes (33% - 40%). Operational taxonomic units (OTUs) obtained from all the samples averaged at 1414. Temperature and pH were equally significant predictors of genomic diversity and richness, with the warm and cold spring sources having less than 5 bacteria phyla. Exiguobacterium sp. (a potential plastic degrader) and other deep rooted bacteria were found in the warm spring while the cold spring outflow contained among others such as Rubrobacter sp. and Chloroflexi sp.
