Intraguild predation among Scolothrips Iongicornis （Thysanoptera： Thripidae）, Neoseiulus californicus and Typhlodromus bagdasarjani （Acari： Phytoseiidae） under laboratory conditions

This study was carried out on the ability of predatory thrips Scolothrips longi- cornis Priesner to feed on 2 phytoseiid species and vice versa. Also the effect of predation of Neoseiulus californicus （McGregor） on Typhlodromus bagdasarjani Wainstein and Aru- tunjan and vice versa was evaluated. The larvae, prepupae, and pupae of thrips and the eggs, larvae, and protonymphs of phytoseiids were selected as intraguild prey. The in- traguild predation （IGP） among S. longicornis and 2 phytoseiid species was unidirectional and in favor of phytoseiids, i.e., S. longicornis was not able to feed on larval stages of 2 phytoseiids. However, N. californicus and T. bagdasarjani fed on the 1st instar larvae （1.39 and 0.80 per day）, 2nd instar larvae （0.87 and 0.55 per day）, prepupae （0.51 and 0.48 per day）, and pupae of thrips （0.51 and 0.49 per day, respectively）. Both phytoseiids fed on eggs, larvae, and protonymphal stages of each other. Females of N. californicus con- sumed more phytoseiid larvae （2.49 per day） than T. bagdasarjani, which consumed 1.08 N. californicus larvae per day. When Tetranychus urticae was presented as an extraguild prey, intensity oflGP between 2 species ofphytoseiids and on larval stages ofS. longicornis reduced significantly. Therefore, it is concluded that （i） IGP existed among the 3 examined species and lack of feeding of S. longicornis on 2 phytoseiid species can be justified by its feeding type （monophagy）, （ii） N. californicus was much more prone to IGP than was T. bagdasarjani.

This paper investigates how to address the chaos problem in a permanent magnet synchronous generator（PMSG） in a wind turbine system. Predictive control approach is proposed to suppress chaotic behavior and make operating stable;the advantage of this method is that it can only be applied to one state of the wind turbine system. The use of the genetic algorithms to estimate the optimal parameter values of the wind turbine leads to maximization of the power ***, some simulation results are included to visualize the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.

A series of laboratory flume experiments were done in a large-scale 180° bend with non-cohesive sediment to find optimal or effective protection works at a bend. Detailed study of the scour and flow field dynamics with and without protection works was done. Spatially dense, high frequency velocity data were collected and analyzed to describe the pattern and magnitude of three-dimensional(3 D)velocity throughout the bend. Characterizing the role of flow field dynamics on the pattern of deposition and erosion through experimental measurements provided valuable data about how such flow features contribute to scour and about the performance of the protection works. From the experimental results, it is revealed that for a perennial river it is not possible to protect from scour either with riprap or with submerged vanes alone. Protection from scour at a bend can be achieved with proper combination of these two works. First, submerged vanes can protect the toe, and, second, riprap can protect the upper part of the slope if it is not damaged through toe erosion. The experiments convincingly demonstrate the efficiency of this bank protection technique.

Burkina Faso is a malaria-endemic country, with a high incidence of G6PD deficiency (G6PDd), which recorded its first case of COVID-19 in March 2020. G6PDd leads to a decrease in the efficiency of erythrocytes to combat oxidative stress, while SARS-CoV-2 infection induces massive production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) in patients. In the present review, we discuss a possible link between G6PDd and SARS-CoV-2 infection. The mean prevalence of G6PDd in Burkina Faso is estimated at 16.6% among males and 6.5% among females. A total of 21,128 cases of COVID-19 have been recorded in Burkina Faso with 387 deaths reported (with a mortality rate of 1.15% among diagnosed cases) as of August 30, 2022. To our knowledge, no association study between G6PDd and SARS-CoV-2 infection has been conducted to date in Burkina Faso. However, several case reports around the world have described elevated risks of hemolysis and thrombosis, and other complications among G6PD-deficient patients infected with SARS-CoV-2. The use of Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) has also been deemed unsafe by some authors for the treatment of COVID-19 among patients with G6PDd. Although HCQ has been shown to be well tolerated in COVID-19 patients in Burkina Faso, the drug could induce hemolytic crises in people with G6PD deficiency. G6PD is important in regulating ROS and maintaining erythrocyte homeostasis. In view of its high prevalence in Burkina Faso, determination of the G6PD status is required in COVID-19 patients for adequate management such as identifying a subset of COVID-19 patients for whom close monitoring and supportive care may be essential and to restrict treatment with HCQ.

Microbial-induced carbonate precipitation(MICP)and enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation(EICP)are two bio-cementation techniques,which are relatively new methods of ground *** both techniques share some similarities,they can exhibit different overall behaviours due to the differences in urease enzyme sources and treatment *** paper presented 40 unconfined compressive strength(UCS)tests of MICP and EICP treated sand specimens with similar average calcium carbonate(CaCO3)content subjected to cycles of wetting-drying(WD),freezing-thawing(FT)and elevated temperature(fire resistance test e FR and thermogravimetric analysis e TG).The average CaCO3 content after a certain number of WD or FT cycles(ACn)and their corresponding UCS(qn)reduced while the mass loss *** EICP treated sand specimens appeared to exhibit a lower resistance to WD and FT cycles than MICP treated specimens possibly due to the presence of unbonded or loosely bonded CaCO3 within the soil matrix,which was subsequently removed during the wetting(during WD)or thawing(during FT)*** test and TG analysis showed a significant loss of mass and reduction in CaCO3 content with increased temperatures,possibly due to the thermal decomposition of CaCO3.A complete deterioration of the MICP and EICP treated sand specimens was observed for temperatures above 600*** observed behaviours are complex and theoretical understanding is far behind to develop a constitutive model to predict ***,a multi-objective evolutionary genetic algorithm(GA)that deals with pseudo-polynomial structures,known as evolutionary polynomial regression(EPR),was used to seek three choices from millions of polynomial *** best EPR model produced an excellent prediction of qn with a minimum sum of squares error(SSE)of 2.392,mean squared error(MSE)of 0.075,root mean square error(RMSE)of 0.273 and a maximum coefficient of determination of 0.939.

We undertook a prospective and descriptive observational study on abdominal trauma from February 1, 2016 to August 31, 2017. The aim of this work was to identify the typology and management of abdominal trauma cases in our surgery department. Overall, abdominal trauma represented 3.54% (62/1751) of all surgeries during the study period. Among the 62 cases, men accounted for 59 and women for 3. The sex ratio was 19.67. The mean age was 24 ± 15 years. Road accidents were the most represented with 43.5% of cases. The couple of signs, hypovolemic shock and abdominal pain and decrease on blood pressure were the prominent clinical symptoms with 100.0%, and 50.0% of cases, respectively. Abdominal ultrasound and abdominal x-ray without contrast were performed in 67.0% and 18.0% of cases, respectively. Abdominal trauma was divided into two entities: contusion 68% and wounds 32%. Medical treatment was sufficient in 23.00% of cases. Laparotomy as a surgical approach was performed in 77.0% of cases. Local hemostasis plus drainage (27.08%), splenectomy (25.00%), suture (14.58%), hemostasis by tamponade (8.33%) and colostomy (2.08%) were undertaken as surgical procedures when it came to deal with contusions. Debridement of wounds plus suture and hemostasis by tamponade was performed in 18.73% and 4.16 cases, respectively. The most observed lesions were those of the spleen with 27.42% and those of the small bowel with 24.19%. The postoperative follow-up was straightforward in 83.33% of cases. The overall mortality was 4.17%.
