non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and statins in relation to colorectal cancer risk

AIM： To investigate the association between individual or combined use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs （nSAIDs） or statins and colorectal cancer ***： In a population-based case-control study in women, we examined the association between nSAIDs and statin use and the risk of colorectal cancers. We further investigated whether the use of statins modifies the protective effect of nSAIDs. Female cases （n = 669）of colorectal cancer aged 50-74 years were identified from a storewide registry in Wisconsin during 1999-2001. Community control women （n = 1375） were randomly selected from lists of licensed drivers and Medicare beneficiaries. Medication use and risk factor information were gathered during a structured telephone interview. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to calculate odds ratio （OR） and 95% confidence interval （CI）.RESULTS： Overall, nSAIDs users had a 30% reduction in risk of colorectal cancer （95% CI： 0.56-0.88）. Statin use was not associated with colorectal cancer risk （OR = 1.17, 95% CI： 0.74-1.85）, regardless of structural type （lipophilic or hydrophilic）, duration of use, or recency. There was no evidence of an interaction between nSAIDs and statins and colorectal cancer risk （P-interaction = 0.28）.COnCLUSIOn： Although our results confirm the inverse association between nSAIDs use and colorectal cancer risk, they do not support a risk reduction in statin users, or an interaction effect of combined nSAIDs and statin use.

Many carnivores require large ranges to meet their ecological and energetic needs;however,anthropogenic changes threaten species and their *** traps have been used to effectively collect data on carnivores in a variety of habitat types;however,a single survey effort is typically limited to species that have similar body size,habitat use and movement patterns,and individual identification of animals is not always pos*** evaluated whether scat detection dogs could effectively survey for 4 wide-ranging felids that vary in these characteristics:jaguars(Panthera onca),pumas(Puma concolor),ocelots(Leopardus pardalis)and oncillas(Leopardus tigrinus).From June to October 2009 and May to August 2011,a detection dog-handler team detected 588 scats,from which 176 unique genotypes were *** assigned sex to 84.7%of the genotyped scats and identified 55 individuals multiple *** effectiveness of these noninvasive techniques(detection dogs and genetic analyses of scat)not only opens the door for additional studies in areas that were previously difficult or impossible with standard survey techniques,but also provides conservationists with a set of tools that overcome some of the limitations associated with the use of camera traps alone.

Background:Variable retention(aggregated and dispersed retention)harvesting proposed for nothofagus pumilio was designed for timber purposes and biodiversity *** by opening canopy generates different microenvironments and creates contrasting conditions for seedling establishment,growth,and eco-physiology performance due to synergies(positives or negatives)with biotic and abiotic *** study evaluated the regeneration in different microenvironment conditions within managed stands during 5 years after *** forest structure after harvesting and different microenvironments were characterized in managed stands,where 105 regeneration plots were measured(3 stands×7 microenvironments×5 replicas).We characterized the seedling bank,as well as growth and ecophysiology performance of the *** and multivariate analyses were conducted for the ***:Microenvironments offered different environmental conditions for natural regeneration(soil moisture and light availability).Seedling under debris and dicot plants showed better eco-physiological performance,establishment,and growth than plants growing under monocots or located in the dispersed retention without the protection of other understory *** most unfavorable microenvironment conditions were high canopy cover of remnant trees(inside the aggregates or close to trees in the dispersed retention)and heavily impacted areas(skidder extraction roads).Conclusions:Favorable microenvironments in the harvested areas will improve the natural recruitment,growth,and eco-physiology performance of the natural regeneration after *** is necessary to develop new silvicultural practices that decrease the unfavorable microenvironments(e.g.,road density or excessive woody accumulation),to assure the success of the proposed silvicultural method.

Background Manual segmentation of thymoma is an onerous,labor-intensive,and subjective task for ***,the development of an automatic and efficient method for thymoma segmentation can be valuable for the early detection and diagnosis of this *** Three hundred and ten subjects were enrolled in this retrospective study and all underwent CECT *** the scans were manually labeled by four experienced *** successful application of convolution neural networks(Cnns)and Transformer in computer vision led us to propose a hybrid Cnn–Transformer architecture,named transformer attention net(TA-net),that would allow the utilization of both local information from Cnn features and the global information encoded by Transformers.U-net was used as the basic structure and Transformers were inserted into convolution blocks in the *** addition,attention gates were embedded in skip connections to highlight salient *** of the accuracy,intersection over Union(IoU),Dice score,and Boundary F1 contour matching score(BFScore)between the predicted segmentation and the manual labels were utilized to evaluate segmentation *** For thymoma segmentation using TA-net,the accuracy,Dice score,IoU,and BFScore were 92.49%,89.92%,83.80%,and 0.8945,respectively,and no significant differences were detected among tumor types and enhanced *** proposed method achieved the best performance when compared with state-of-the-art *** The proposed method,which combines Cnns with Transformer,achives outstanding performance in thymoma segmentation compared with previous ***-net may provide consistent and reproducible delineation,thereby assisting radiologists in clinical applications.

Targeting Divalent Metal Ions at the Active Site of the HIV-1 Rnase H Domain: nMR Studies on the Interactions of Divalent Metal Ions with Rnase H and Its Inhibitors

HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) Rnase H (HIV-RH) is a key target of anti-AIDS drugs. Metal-chelating compounds are an important class of chemicals in pharmacological drug discovery, especially in relation to HIV-RT and the highly-related HIV-integrase. The correlation between the metal-chelating properties and enzyme activities of the metal chelators is always of high scientific interest, as an understanding of this may accelerate the rational optimization of this class of inhibitors. Our nMR data show that Mg2+ and Ca2+ bind specifically to the active site of the Rnase H domain and two Mg2+ ions sequentially bind one molecule of Rnase H. We also demonstrate here, using saturated and unsaturated tricyclic n-hydroxypyridones designed to block the active site, that the primary binding sites and affinities of divalent metal ions are correlated with the structures of the chelating motifs. Chemical shift perturbation studies of protein/metal-ion/compound ternary complexes also indicate that divalent metal ions play important roles for the specific interaction of the compounds with the Rnase H active site.

Strategies for Successful Ageing Living Alone

The purpose of this qualitative study, conducted in Thailand, was to identify strategies for older adults to live alone happily, with dignity, security, and independence. Purposive sampling techniques were used to recruit participants from 12 provinces throughout Thailand. The sample included three groups： older Thai people living alone （n = 1,087）, clinician who working with Thai older adults （n = 149）, and administrators working in aged care and support services in Thailand （n = 83）. Data were collected using structured interview guides. Content analysis was used to identify and develop the study findings. Most of the older Thai people living alone were single, widowed or divorced with few wanting to remain living alone. The large majority of participants needed government assistance to manage their activities of daily living including access to health and public services. Participants wanted aged care and support services to assist with their living arrangements, organise community activities, and provide home visits. Moreover, they wanted their families to visit them and provide financial support and care for them when they were ill. These older adults experienced living alone positively and negatively. Some participants felt proud, dignified, and independent. Other participants felt that living alone resulted in poorer health status, particularly emotional problems, especially for those who were not living alone by choice. These participants reported feeling lonely, bored, irritated, sad, and sorrowful. This group of older Thai adults had limited interaction with their families and the wider community. From this study, four strategies were identified to assist older Thai adults to live alone happily, safely and with a sense of dignity, security, and value. These strategies are： ensuring individual choice, maintaining family support, developing community value, and advocating for over-arching government policy support of aged care. Residential smoking restrictions are not associated with reduced child SHS exposure in a baseline sample of low-income, urban African Americans

Second hand smoke exposure (SHSe) relates to many chronic and acute illnesses. Low income African American (AA) maternal smokers and their children have disproportionately higher tobacco-use and child SHSe-related morbidity and mortality than other populations. While public health officials promote residential smoking restrictions to reduce SHSe and promote smoking cessation, little is known about the impact of restrictions in changing smoking behavior and SHSe in this population. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine associations between residential smoking restrictions, maternal smoking, and young children’s SHSe in the context of other factors known to influence low income AA mothers’ smoking behavior. For this study, we used cross-sectional, baseline data from 307 AA maternal smokers’ pre-treatment interviews completed as part of a subsequent behavioral counseling trial to reduce their young (n’s SHSe. Residential smoking restriction was dichotomized as 0 = no restrictions and 1 = some restrictions. Child urine cotinine provided a biomarker of SHSe. Mothers reported cigarettes/day smoked, cigarettes/day exposed to child, and intention to quit. Multivariate regressions modeled effects of restriction as the primary predictor of smoking and exposure outcomes. Maternal smoking patterns such as cigarettes per day (β = 0.52, p nd years smoked (β = ?0.11;p = 0.03) along with presence of additional smokers in the home (β = 0.10;p = 0.04), but not residential restriction (β = ?0.09, p = 0.10), predicted reported SHSe. Restriction did not relate to baby cotinine or maternal intention to quit. Thus, residential smoking restrictions may contribute to efforts to reduce children’s SHSe and promote maternal smoking change;but alone, may not constitute a sufficient intervention to protect children. Current Techniques and Practices for Myocardial Stress Testing—A Comparative Survey between Malta and International nuclear Medicine Centres

Objectives: The study compared cardiac scintigraphy stress scanning practices applied in a national Maltese nuclear Medicine centre and in international centres. This was achieved through the design of an online survey which investigated participant knowledge of stress testing, and current procedural practice. Methods: An online survey comprising 12 questions was prepared using Survey Monkey. Professional nuclear Medicine groups such as the Medical-Physics-Engineering community and Virtual Radiopharmacy were targeted. Access to the survey remained open for eight months during which a periodic reminder was sent to optimise the response rate. Forty-three members responded from across Europe and Australasia. Chi-square tests and comparisons between multiple responses using IBM SPSS 20 were used to evaluate the results. Information related to Maltese practice was collated separately for review and comparative purposes. Results: The online survey participants comprised United Kingdom [72%], other European countries [18%] and Australasia [9%]. The majority of respondents [n = 39] reported pharmacological stress testing as being performed either alone or in conjunction with exercise stress testing as the preferred option. Most participants [60%] were aware of local stress test protocols but had limited knowledge in relation to guidelines designed for cases where patients were not suitable for pharmacological stress testing. Conclusion: The survey provided information about procedures within participating centres for scintigraphic cardiac stress scanning. Differences were identified with regards to the preferred radiopharmaceutical tracers and procedural protocols. Further investigation of examination techniques is warranted, with the aim of increasing standardisation of protocol compliance and the application of more suitable practice.
