Analyses of spatial relationships and social interactions provide insights into the social structure of animal societies and the ways in which social preferences among and between dyads affect higher order social relationships. In this paper we de- scribe the patterns of spatial associations and social interactions among adult male northern muriquis in order to evaluate the dy- namics of their social networks above the dyadic levels. Systematic observations were made on the 17 adult males present in a multi-male/multi-female group from April 2004 through February 2005, and in July 2005. Analyses of their spatial relationships identified two distinct male cliques; some adult males （called ＂N＂ males） were more connected to the females and immatures than other adult males （＂MU＂ males）, which were more connected to one another. Affiliative interactions were significantly higher among dyads belonging to the same clique than to different cliques. Although frequencies of dyadic agonistic interactions were similarly low among individuals within and between cliques, MU males appeared to be subordinate to N males. Nonetheless, there were no significant differences in the copulation rates estimated for MU males and N males. Mutual benefits of cooperation between MU and N cliques in intergroup encounters might explain their ongoing associations in the same mixed-sex group

Value of carcinoembryonic antigen and cytokeratins for the detection of recurrent disease following curative resection of colorectal cancer

AIM： To evaluate the efficacy of postoperative serial assay of carcinoembryonic antigen （CEA） and cytokeratins for the detection of recurrent disease in patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma after radical surgery. METHODS： between 1993 and 2000, 120 patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma underwent radical surgery in the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Federal University of Sao paulo-Escola paulista de Medicina, Sao paulo, brazil. periodic postoperative evaluation was performed by assaying markers in peripheral serum, colonoscopy and imaging examination. presence of CEA was detected using the Delfia^R method with 5 μg/L threshold, and cytokeratins using the LIA-mat TpA-M prolifigen^R method with 72 U/L threshold. RESULTS： In the first postoperative year, patients without recurrent disease had normal levels of CEA （1.5 ＋ 0.9μg/L） and monoclonal tissue polypeptide antigen-M （TpA-M, 64.4 ± 47.8 U/L）, while patients with recurrences had high levels of CEA （6.9± 9.8 ;μg/L, p 〈 0.01） and TpA-M （192.2 ±328.8 U/L, p 〈 0.05）. During the second postoperative year, patients without tumor recurrence had normal levels of CEA （2.0 ± 1.8μg/L） and TpA-M （50.8±38.4 U/L）, while patients with recurrence had high levels of CEA （66.3 ±130.8 μg/L, p 〈 0.01） and TpA-M （442.7 ± 652.8 U/L, p 〈 0.05）. The mean follow-up time was 22.3 mo. There was recurrence in 23 cases. Five reoperations were performed without achieving radical excision. Rises in tumor marker levels preceded identification of recurrences： CEA in seven （30%） and TpA-M in eleven individuals （48%）. CONCLUSION： Intensive follow-up by serial assay of CEA and cytokeratins allows early detection of colorectal neoplasm recurrence.

Many advances have been made in the understanding of Crohn’s disease (CD) pathogenesis during the last decade. CD is currently seen as a predominantly T-lym-phocyte-driven disease characterized by the presence of a complex cocktail of interacting cytokines, chemokines and other mediators produced by a variety of cell types. prevailing theories of CD pathogenesis suggest that patients’ T-lymphocytes are inappropriately activated in the setting of an immune imbalance, which is itself caused by an unfortunate confluence of genetic and en- vironmental factors. The T-cell response then leads to the chronic inflammation characteristic for the disease. Various environmental factors may play a role in the development of CD, but microbes are most consistently implied. This theory is based on epidemiological, clinico- pathological, genetic and experimental evidence. Despite the abundance of arguments for the implication of bac-teria in the aetiopathogenesis of CD, the precise role of bacteria in this disease still remains elusive. Three not necessarily mutually exclusive theories have been pro- posed: (1) an unidentified persistent pathogen; (2) an abnormally permeable mucosal barrier leading to exces-sive bacterial translocation; and (3) a breakdown in the balance between putative "protective" versus "harmful" intestinal bacteria ("dysbiosis"). At present, one cannot exclude with certainty any of these three proposed hy-potheses; they may all apply to CD to a certain extent.

A Rapid and Facile Synthesis Method for Nanosize Rutile phase TiO<sub>2</sub>with High photocatalytic Activity

A green, rapid and facile method for synthesis of pure rutile TiO2 has been developed. Rutile TiO2 of high purity was synthesized by controlled hydrolysis of TiCl3 in aqueous medium at room temperature. Addition of nitric acid to TiCl3 greatly increased the rate of TiCl3 hydrolysis, crystallization and surface area of the prepared TiO2 powder. The phase obtained in this way was identified by X-ray diffraction. TiO2 synthesized by this method showed a unique flower-like assembly of nanotubes, very high surface area and high photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation.

Effect of Combined Use of brackish Water and Nitrogen Fertilizer on biomass and Sugar Yield of Sweet Sorghum

Soil salinization and non-point source pollution are among the most important and widespread environmental problems in European Mediterranean regions. Sweet sorghum （Sorghum bicolor （L.） Moench var. saccharatum） is a moderate to high salinity tolerant crop with low water and nutrient needs, seen as an alternative to grow in the water scarce regions. A three-year multifactorial study was conducted in southern portugal to evaluate the combined effects of saline water and nitrogen application on the dry biomass （total, stems, and leaves）, sugar content （total reducing sugars and sucrose eontents） and sugar yield （here defined as the product of total reducing sugars and stems dry biomass） functions of sweet sorghum. Sorghum dry biomass and sugar yield showed diminishing returns for each incremental change of nitrogen. The use of saline irrigation waters also led to yield reduction. Exception was sucrose content which increased with increasing levels of sodium in the soil. Nitrogen need decreased as the amount of sodium applied increased. Stem dry biomass, sucrose content, and sugar yield progressively increased with progress in the experiment. The effect could be attributed to the increase of the amount of irrigation applied throughout the years, thus increasing the leaching fraction which promoted salt leaching from the root zone, reduced the salinity stress, increased plant transpiration, nitrogen uptake and biomass yield.

Stochastic seismic inversion and bayesian facies classification applied to porosity modeling and igneous rock identification

We apply stochastic seismic inversion and bayesian facies classification for porosity modeling and igneous rock identification in the presalt interval of the Santos basin. This integration of seismic and well-derived information enhances reservoir characterization. Stochastic inversion and bayesian classification are powerful tools because they permit addressing the uncertainties in the model. We used the ES-MDA algorithm to achieve the realizations equivalent to the percentiles p10, p50, and p90 of acoustic impedance, a novel method for acoustic inversion in presalt. The facies were divided into five: reservoir 1,reservoir 2, tight carbonates, clayey rocks, and igneous rocks. To deal with the overlaps in acoustic impedance values of facies, we included geological information using a priori probability, indicating that structural highs are reservoir-dominated. To illustrate our approach, we conducted porosity modeling using facies-related rock-physics models for rock-physics inversion in an area with a well drilled in a coquina bank and evaluated the thickness and extension of an igneous intrusion near the carbonate-salt interface. The modeled porosity and the classified seismic facies are in good agreement with the ones observed in the wells. Notably, the coquinas bank presents an improvement in the porosity towards the top. The a priori probability model was crucial for limiting the clayey rocks to the structural lows. In Well b, the hit rate of the igneous rock in the three scenarios is higher than 60%, showing an excellent thickness-prediction capability.

In standard interval mapping (IM) of quantitative trait loci (QTL), the QTL effect is described by a normal mixture model. When this assumption of normality is violated, the most commonly adopted strategy is to use the previous model after data transformation. However, an appropriate transformation may not exist or may be difficult to find. Also this approach can raise interpretation issues. An interesting alternative is to consider a skew-normal mixture model in standard IM, and the resulting method is here denoted as skew-normal IM. This flexible model that includes the usual symmetric normal distribution as a special case is important, allowing continuous variation from normality to non-normality. In this paper we briefly introduce the main peculiarities of the skew-normal distribution. The maximum likelihood estimates of parameters of the skew-normal distribution are obtained by the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. The proposed model is illustrated with real data from an intercross experiment that shows a significant departure from the normality assumption. The performance of the skew-normal IM is assessed via stochastic simulation. The results indicate that the skew-normal IM has higher power for QTL detection and better precision of QTL location as compared to standard IM and nonparametric IM.
