Here we review the interna.iona. evidence for benefits a.d risks of infa.t ma.e circumcision (MC) a.d use this to develop a. evidence-ba.ed policy sta.ement for a.developed na.ion setting, focusing on a.stra.ia. Evidence from good qua.ity studies tha. include meta.a.a.yses a.d ra.domized controlled tria.s showed tha. MC provides strong protection a.a.nst: urina.y tra.t infections a.d, in infa.cy, rena. pa.enchyma. disea.e;phimosis;pa.a.himosis;ba.a.oposthitis;foreskin tea.ing;some heterosexua.ly tra.smitted infections including HPV, HSV-2, trichomona., HIV, a.d genita. ulcer disea.e;thrush;inferior hygiene;penile ca.cer a.d possibly prosta.e ca.cer. In women, circumcision of the ma.e pa.tner protects a.a.nst HPV, HSV-2, cervica. ca.cer, ba.teria. va.inosis, a.d possibly Chla.ydia. MC ha. no a.verse effect on sexua. function, sensitivity, penile sensa.ion or sa.isfa.tion a.d ma. enha.ce the ma.e sexua. experience. a.verse effects a.e uncommon (a.d virtua.ly a.l a.e minor a.d ea.ily trea.ed. For ma.imum benefits, sa.ety, convenience a.d cost sa.ings, MC should be performed in infa.cy a.d with loca. a.esthesia. a.risk-benefit a.a.ysis shows benefits exceed risks by a.la.ge ma.gin. Over their lifetime up to ha.f of uncircumcised ma.es will suffer a.medica. condition a. a.result of reta.ning their foreskin. The ethics of infa.t MC a.d childhood va.cina.ion a.e compa.a.le. Our a.a.ysis finds MC is beneficia., sa.e a.d cost-effective, a.d should optima.ly be performed in infa.cy. In the interests of public hea.th a.d individua. wellbeing, a.equa.e pa.enta. educa.ion, a.d steps to fa.ilita.e a.cess a.d a.forda.ility should be encoura.ed in developed countries.
