The brown alga, Akamoku, also known as Sargassum horneri, was harvested at depths of 1 - 2 and 5 m in the oceanic areas of the Chikuzen Sea off the coast of Fukuoka, Japan, and its chemical composition (moisture, protein, lipid, ash, carbohydrate and total dietary fiber content) was investigated. The aim of this study was to elucidate the relationship between the chemical components and the growth of S. horneri as recyclable resource for a sustainable future. S. horneri at an ocean depth of 5 m grew rapidly. The biomass was abundant from January until April. After maturation and gamete release at the middle of April, plant senescence began occurring, and only short plants remained at the sea bottom. On the other hand, S. horneri at an ocean depth of 1 - 2 m grew slowly and could be harvested until early June. The protein, lipid and total dietary fiber content of S. horneri at an ocean depth of 5 m showed apparent gender-based differences.

A Bicycle Design Model Based on Young Women＇s Fashion Combined With CAD and Statistical Science

Today, more people are riding bicycles than ever before--and the numbers keep growing. This is due in part to a greater awareness of environmental issues and growing health consciousness. Another factor driving the increasing number of women bicyclists today is many designer bicycles now available. Still, these bicycles reflect the subjective sensibilities of their designers, and there is no guarantee that they will always match an increasingly diverse array of consumer values. In response to this challenge, our study sets out to build a bicycle design model based on fashion styles popular with young women in their 20s. Fashion analysis and bicycle design analysis used statistical science, such as cluster analysis, principal component analysis, and analytic hierarchy process （AHP）. After that, we designed a new bicycle using computer-aided design （CAD） from the analysis results. Finally, the approach model developed in this study was confirmed to be effective by an interview with the company.

A combination of hydrophilic interaction chromatographic(HILIC) column and a weakly acidic cation-exchange resin(WCX) column was used for simultaneous separation of inorganic anions and cations by ion chromatography(IC).Firstly,the capability of HILIC column for the separation of analyte ions was evaluated under acidic eluent *** columns used were SeQuant ZIC-HILIC(ZIC-HILIC) with a sulfobetaine-zwitterion stationary phase(ZIC-HILIC) and Acclaim HILIC-10 with a diol stationary phase(HILIC-10).When using tartaric acid as the eluent,the HILIC columns indicated strong retentions for anions,based on ion-pair ***,HILIC-10 could strongly retain anions compared with *** selectivity for analyte anions of HILIC-10 with 5 mmol/L tartaric acid eluent was in the order of I-> NO-3 > Br-> Cl-> ***,since HILIC-10 could not separate analyte cations,a WCX column(TSKgel Super IC-A/C) was connected after the HILIC column in *** combination column system of HILIC and WCX columns could successfully separate ten ions(Na+,NH+4,K+,Mg2+,Ca2+,H2PO-4,Cl-,Br-,NO-3 and I-) with elution of 4 mmol/L tartaric acid plus 8 mmol/L *** relative standard deviations(RSDs) of analyte ions by the system were in the ranges of 0.02%-0.05% in retention times and 0.18%-5.3% in peak areas through three-time successive *** limits of detection at signal-to-noise ratio of 3 were 0.24-0.30 μmol/L for the cations and 0.31-1.2 μmol/L for the *** system was applied for the simultaneous determination of the cations and the anions in a vegetable juice sample with satisfactory results.

Robotic surgery for rectal cancer: A systematic review of current practice

AIM: To give a comprehensive review of current litera-ture on robotic rectal cancer ***: A systematic review of current literature via PubMed and Embase search engines was per-formed to identify relevant articles from january 2007 to november 2013. The keywords used were: "robotic surgery", "surgical robotics", "laparoscopic computer-assisted surgery", "colectomy" and "rectal resection". RESULTS: After the initial screen of 380 articles, 20 pa-pers were selected for review. A total of 1062 patients(male 64.0%) with a mean age of 61.1 years and body mass index of 24.9 kg/m2 were included in the *** of 1062 robotic-assisted operations, 831(78.2%) anterior and low anterior resections, 132(12.4%) in-tersphincteric resection with coloanal anastomosis, 98(9.3%) abdominoperineal resections and 1(0.1%) Hart-mann's operation were included in the review. Robotic rectal surgery was associated with longer operative time but with comparable oncological results and anastomotic leak rate when compared with laparoscopic rectal surgery. CONCLUSION: Robotic colorectal surgery has con-tinued to evolve to its current state with promising re-sults; feasible surgical option with low conversion rate and comparable short-term oncological results. The challenges faced with robotic surgery are for more high quality studies to justify its cost.

Clinically diagnosed late-onset fulminant Wilson's disease without cirrhosis: A case report

A 64-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with jaundice of the bulbar conjunctiva and general fatigue. After admission, she developed hepatic encephalopathy and was diagnosed with fulminant hepatitis based on the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease(AASLD) position paper. Afterwards, additional laboratory findings revealed that serum ceruloplasmin levels were reduced, urinary copper levels were greatly elevated and Wilson's disease(WD)-specific routine tests were positive, but the Kayser-Fleischer ring was not clear. Based on the AASLD practice guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of WD, the patient was ultimately diagnosed with fulminant WD. Then, administration of penicillamine and zinc acetate was initiated; however, the patient unfortunately died from acute pneumonia on the 28 th day of hospitalization. At autopsy, the liver did not show a bridging pattern of fibrosis suggestive of chronic liver injury. Here, we present the case of a patient with clinically diagnosed late-onset fulminant WD without cirrhosis, who had positive disease-specific routine tests.

AIM To investigate the anti-fibrotic effects of the traditional oriental herbal medicine Daikenchuto(DKT) associated with transient receptor potential ankyrin 1(TRPA1) channels in intestinal myofibroblasts. METHODS Inflammatory and fibrotic changes were detected in a2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid(TNBS) chronic colitis model of wild-type and TRPA1-knockout(TRPA1-KO) mice via pathological staining and immunoblotting ***^(2+) imaging experiments examined the effects of DKT and its components/ingredients on intestinal myofibroblast(In Myo Fib) cell TRPA1 channel *** factors and transforming growth factor (TGF) -β1-associated signaling were tested in an In Myo Fib cell line by q PCR and immunoblotting *** from non-stenotic and stenotic regions of the intestines of patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) were used for pathological analysis. The detailed mechanisms that facilitate the heat tolerance of terrestrial cyanobacteria have not been completely elucidated, although several reports have revealed aspects of the heat tolerance mechanisms of several other organisms. The dormant cells, called akinetes, of the terrestrial cyanobacterium Nostoc sp. HK-01 can revive after dry heat exposure at 100℃ for more than 10 h. We investigated the compatible solutes that protect the biomolecules in Nostoc sp. HK-01 akinetes using colonies containing various proportions of akinetes. We extracted the intracellular substances from each colony with 80% ethanol, which we purified with a series of analytical columns and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography and liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry. The compatible solutes were screened for their ability to prevent protein aggregation upon heating using the model enzyme lactate dehydrogenase. We detected an accumulation of glucosylglycerol, betaine, and glycine in akinetes. In addition, we confirmed that betaine, glycine, sucrose, and trehalose contributed to the prevention of the protein aggregation. The levels of sucrose and glycine in the colonies were approximately 1000× higher than those of glucosylglycerol, betaine, or trehalose. Our results indicated that sucrose and glycine are the main compatible solutes in the hydrophilic fractions of the cell extracts of Nostoc sp. HK-01 akinetes.

Background: Bonding disorders affect the growth and development of infants. In Japan, the Japanese version of the Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale (MIBS-J) is widely used for early detection of bonding disorders. Repeated use of a questionnaire has problems of reduced validity. In order to correctly detect bonding disorders at multiple time points, it is necessary to confirm the measurement invariance of the scale. Baba et al. reported that invariance of the MIBS-J factor structure could only be obtained by abridging the scale into three items. Purpose: The aim of this study was to 1) confirm the factor structure and measurement invariance of the MIBS-J between two measurement times and 2) to examine factors that can be used without being affected by measurement time in order to identify item that contribute to measure met invariance. Methods: We analysed the data of 1049 and 878 mothers with a neonate collected in two waves: 5 days (Wave 1) and 1 month postpartum (Wave 2). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted on the data randomly divided into two groups in each wave. Results: The three-item model (MIBS-J items 1, 6, and 8) was most accepted. Measurement invariance and structural invariance were confirmed in the model. This was consistent with Baba et al.’s model. Conclusion: The three MIBS-J items showed measurement invariance and structural invariance in Japanese mothers during 1 month postpartum.

Transcriptional regulation of human polo-like kinases and early mitotic inhibitors

Human polo-like kinases （PLK1-PLK4） have been implicated in mitotic regulation and carcinogenesis. PLK1 phosphorylates early mitotic inhibitor 1 （Emil） to ensure mitosis entry, whereas Emi2 plays a key role during the meiotic cell cycle. Transcription factor E2F is primarily considered to regulate the G1/S transition of the cell cycle but its involvement in the regulation of mitosis has also been recently suggested. A gap still exists between the molecular basis of E2F and mitotic regulation. The present study was designed to characterize the transcriptional regulation of human PLK and Emi genes. Adenoviral overexpression of E2F1 increased PLK1 and PLK3 mRNA levels in A549 cells. A reporter gene assay revealed that the putative promoter regions of PLK1, PLK3, and PLK4 genes were responsive to activators E2F, E2F1-E2F3. We further characterized the putative promoter regions of Emil and Emi2 genes, and these could be regulated by activators E2F and E2F1-E2F4, respectively. Finally, PLK1-PLK4, Emil, and Emi2 mRNA expression levels in human adult, fetal tissues, and several cell lines indicated that each gene has a unique expression pattern but is uniquely expressed in common tissues and cells such as the testes and thymus. Collectively, these results indicate that E2F can integrate G1/S and G2/M to oscillate the cell cycle by regulating mitotic genes PLK and Emi, leading to determination of the cell fate.
