Clear cell carcinoma (CCC) of the uterine cervix is rare, and its etiology is unclear, except for reports of prenatal diethylstilbestrol (DES) exposure. In this case report of a 78-year-old postmenopausal Japanese woman with pelvic endometriosis, cervical CCC presented as a deep interstitial tumor, strongly suggesting the patient suffered from cervical endometriosis for a long time. A cystic lesion without solid components was detected in the uterine cervix. Although the patient had regular gynecological examinations every 6 months, she presented 5 years later with a complaint of watery vaginal discharge. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) detected a uterine cervical cystic mass with a solid component. Although no malignancy was confirmed preoperatively, surgery was performed under a high suspicion of cervical cancer. Intraoperative pathology revealed CCC in a solid tumor, so debulking surgery, including lymphadenectomy, was done. Endometrial tissue was found adjacent to the tumor, strongly suggesting the tumor arose from cervical endometriosis. Because endometriosis in ectopic sites carries a risk of carcinogenesis, as is the case in ovarian endometriosis, it may be recommended that a cervical cystic lesion with pelvic endometriosis should be followed up regularly for the early detection of uterine cancer.

Novel shish-kebab type liquid crystalline poly（p-phenylenevinylene） derivatives were synthesized by Stille coupling reaction from 2,5-bis[（4-n-alkoxyl）benzoyloxy]1,4-dibromobenzene （monomer l） and 1,2-bis（tributylstannyl） ethylene （monomer 2）. The polymers with alkoxy groups are soluble in common organic solvents and exhibit blue fluorescence. Both the cast film and the annealed film have large red-shifts in fluorescence spectra and show yellow fluorescence. The polymers with CN and NO2 groups show poor solubility and green fluorescence. All the polymers possess liquid crystalline smectic phases. The melting point （Tm） of the polymers decreases when the length of the alkoxy tails of the mesogenic units increases. The polymers are easily aligned under a magnetic field of 10 Tesla. It is found that the conjugated backbone and LC side chain are aligned perpendicular and parallel to the magnetic field, respectively. The polymers show optical dichroism in fluorescence spectra, suggesting that they are available for advance materials with linear optical polarization.

When biochar made from waste pallet was added to treated livestock wastewater, the total nitrogen and ammonium ion concentrations decreased, with removal rates over 10 days of about 60% and 30%, respectively. Bacteria were isolated with high ammonium removal ability and they were identified based on their 16S rRNA gene sequences. Anaerobic denitrifying Cronobacter spp. was isolated from the biochar used for water purification. When each strain was cultured in a liquid medium containing ammonium sulfate (initial ammonium concentration 30 mg/L), the highest ammonium removal rates were 83.8% - 96.5%. Organic acids were more effective than carbohydrates as sole carbon sources for nitrogen removal from wastewater. The absorbance at 660 nm increased with nitrogen removal, indicating that cells proliferated, so it was presumed that ammonium was taken up by assimilation.

We demonstrate that the methodology of frequency-resolved optical gating(FROG) is applicable to time-resolved reflection spectroscopy of a plasma mirror in the vacuum-ultraviolet(VUV) region. Our recent study [R. Itakura et al. Opt. Express 23, 10914(2015)] has shown that a VUV waveform can be retrieved from a VUV reflection spectrogram of a plasma mirror formed on a fused silica(FS) surface by irradiation with an intense femtosecond laser pulse. Simultaneously, the increase in the reflectivity with respect to the Fresnel reflection of the unexcited FS surface can be obtained as a time-dependent reflectivity of the plasma mirror. In this study, we update the FROG analysis procedure using the least-square generalized projections algorithm. This procedure can reach convergence much faster than the previous one and has no aliasing problem. It is demonstrated that a significantly chirped VUV pulse as long as 1 ps can be precisely characterized.

Abstract The novel shish-kebab-type liquid crystalline poly（p-phenylene）s were synthesized through Suzuki coupling reaction from 2,5-bis[（4-n-alkoxyl）benzoyloxy]1,4-dibromobenzene （monomer 1） and 1,4-benzenediboronic acid bistrimethylene cyclic ester （monomer 2）. Their structure and properties were characterized by GPC, DSC, X-ray diffraction and polarizing optical microscope （POM）. It was found that the polymers turned to liquid crystalline phase above their melting point. The melting point （Tm） of the polymers decreases when the length of the alkoxy tails of the mesogenic units increases. The mesophase was identified by X-ray diffraction method. The polymers could dissolve in common organic solvents and show strong blue fluorescence. The maximum absorption bands of polymers prepared from annealed films have large red-shift due to the spontaneous orientation of the liquid crystalline side chains. The same phenomena were also observed in the fluorescence spectra.

We review 6 cases of diaphragmatic perforation, with and without herniation, treated in our institution. All patients with diaphragmatic perforation underwent radiofrequency ablation(RFA) treatments for hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) performed at Kurume University Hospital and Tobata Kyoritsu Hospital. We investigated the clinical profiles of the 6 patients between January 2003 and December 2013. We further describe the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of diaphragmatic perforation. The change in the volume of liver and the change in the Child-Pugh score from just after the RFA to the onset of perforation was evaluated using a paired t-test. At the time of perforation, 4 patients had herniation of the viscera, while the other 2 patients had no herniation. The majority of ablated tumors were located adjacent to the diaphragm, in segments 4, 6, and 8. The average interval from RFA to the onset of perforation was 12.8 mo(range, 6-21 mo). The median Child-Pugh score at the onset of perforation(8.2) was significantly higher compared to the median Child-Pugh score just after RFA(6.5)(P = 0.031). All patients underwent laparotomy and direct suture of the diaphragm defect, with uneventful post-surgical recovery. Diaphragmatic perforation after RFA is not a matter that can be ignored. Clinicians should carefully address this complication by performing RFA for HCC adjacent to diaphragm.

The production of β-maltooligosaccharides of capsaicin was investigated using Lactobacillus delbrueckii and cyclodextrin glucanotransferase (CGTase) as biocatalysts. The cells of L. delbrueckii glucosylated capsaicin to give its β-glucoside. The β-glucoside of capsaicin was converted into the corresponding β-maltoside and β-maltotrioside by CGTase. On the other hand, β-melibioside and β-isomaltoside of capsaicin, which were two new compounds, were synthesized by chemical glycosylation. The β-glucoside, β-maltoside, β-melibioside, and β-isomaltoside of capsaicin showed inhibitory effects on IgE antibody production.

Status of colitis-associated cancer in ulcerative colitis

＜正＞ This paper describes an autonomous-control method for a dc micro-grid system having distribution power generators. This system consists of following five generation and control units;a solar-cell generation unit, a wind-turbine generation unit, a battery energy-storage unit, a flywheel power-leveling unit, and an ac grid-connected power control unit. The proposed control method intended for suppression of circulating current detects only the dc grid voltage. Each unit could be controlled autonomously without communicating each other. This method brings high reliability, high-flexibility and maintenance-free operation to the system. Experimental results from a 10kW-prototype system verify the validity and effectiveness of the proposed control method.

Surgical therapy for ulcerative colitis(UC) depends on the medical therapy administered for the patient's condition. UC is a benign disease. However, it has been reported that the rare cases of cancer in UC patients are increasing, and such cases have a worse prognosis. Recently, surgical therapy has greatly changed, there has been quite an increase in the number of UC patients with high-grade dysplasia and/or cancer. These lesions are known as colitis-associated cancer(CAC). The relationship between inflammation and tumorigenesis is well-established, and in the last decade, a great deal of supporting evidence has been obtained from genetic, pharmacological, and epidemiological studies. Inflammatory bowel disease, especially UC, is an important risk factor for the development of colon cancer. We should determine the risk factors for UC patients with cancer based on a large body of data, and we should attempt to prevent the increase in the number of such patients using these newly identified risk factors in the near future. Actively introducing the surgical treatment in addition to medical treatment should be considered. Several physicians should analyze UC from their unique perspectives in order to establish new clinically relevant diagnostic and treatment methods in the future. This article discusses CAC, including its etiology, mechanism, diagnosis, and treatment in UC patients.
