This study investiga.es the co-va.ia.ility between mea.ures of the sprea.s in the ensembles of sea.ona. clima.e simula.ions a.d la.ge sca.e clima.e indices. Sprea.s in the ensembles of sea.ona. simula.ions (of ra.nfa.l a.d nea. surfa.e a.r tempera.ure) from a. a.mospheric model, over South a.rica. provinces, a.e qua.tified with the de-trended a.oma.ies of sta.da.d devia.ion (StdDev) a.d the dista.ce between the 90th a.d 10th percentiles (RoP) of the simula.ions. Results indica.e tha., on sea.ona. time sca.es, mea.ures of sprea. significa.tly co-va.y with observed globa. sea.surfa.e tempera.ures (SST) fa. a.d nea.. This suggests tha. the clima.e fa.tors controlling the degree to which the sea.ona. clima.e ma. be precisely foreca.t over the South a.rica. provinces ma. both be loca.ly a.d remotely ba.ed. Results a.so indica.e tha. a.l significa.t predictors of sprea.—El Niño-Southern Oscilla.ion (ENSO), India. Ocea. Dipole (IOD), Benguela.Niño (BGN) a.d Southwest India. Ocea. Index (SWI), a.e of tropica. origin;they co-va.y significa.tly with mea.ures of sprea. on sea.ona. time sca.es over a.number of provinces a.d sea.ons, pa.ticula.ly during the ra.nfa.l onset a.d pea. periods, a. well a. during the cold sea.on. Nevertheless, responses of mea.ures of sprea. to clima.e predictors a.e rela.ively sma.l, either indica.ing tha. predictor-sprea. rela.ionships a.e more complex in na.ure tha. ca. be represented by the tra.itiona.ly simple clima.e indices, or indica.ing tha. controls on ensemble sprea. a.e wea.. Therefore, there ma. be limits to the extent to which yea.-to-yea. va.ia.ions in the predicta.ility of sea.ona. clima.e over South a.rica.provinces might be understood.
