Evaluation of proximal tubule functions in children with COVID‑19:a prospective analytical study

Background There are limited numbers of studies focusing on renal efects of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)infection and proximal tubular dysfunction in children with COVID-19 infections.The purpose of this study was to evaluate the functions of the proximal tubule in hospitalized children with confrmed acute COVID-19.Methods The children who were hospitalized for confrmed COVID-19 were included in this prospective descriptive analysis.The presence of at least two of the following four abnormalities was used to diagnose proximal tubule injury:abnormal tubular reabsorption of phosphate,normoglycemic glycosuria,hyperuricosuria,and proteinuria.Results A total of 115 patients were included in the study.About a third of the individuals had elevated blood creatinine levels or proteinuria.In addition,abnormal renal tubular phosphate loss measured by renal tubular phosphate loss was found in 10(8.7%)patients,as was hyperuricosuria in 28.6%.As a result,total proximal tubular dysfunction was found in 24(20.9%)patients.Conclusions One in every fve children with acute COVID-19 infections had proximal tubular dysfunction,according to our data.Although,the rate of proximal tubular dysfunction was lower than in adults,it should be noted.The recovery of proximal tubular function in children with COVID-19 should be followed.

Air pollution is one of the biggest environmental threats to human health.In 2005,the World Health Organization(WHO)released its first global air quality guidelines(AQGs)for particulate matter(PM),ozone(O3),nitrogen dioxide(NO2),and sulfur dioxide.[1]On September 22,2021,the WHO updated its AQGs,providing clear evidence of the adverse health effects of air pollution,at even lower concentrations than previously understood.[2]For instance,the WHO AQGs 2021 recommend annual mean concentrations of PM2.5 not exceeding 5μg/m3 and NO2 not exceeding 10μg/m3 and the peak season mean 8-h O3 concentration not exceeding 60μg/m.[2,3]As a comparison,the corresponding WHO AQGs 2005 values were 10μg/m3 for PM2.5 and 40μg/m3 for NO2,with no recommendation for long-term O3 concentrations.

LEO satellite clock analysis and prediction for positioning applications

The positioning service aided by low Earth orbit(LEO)mega-constellations has become a hot topic in recent years.To achieve precise positioning,accuracy of the LEO clocks is important for single-receiver users.To bridge the gap between the applicable time of the clock products and the time of positioning,the precise LEO clocks need to be predicted over a certain period depending on the sampling interval of the clock products.This study discusses the prediction errors for periods from 10 s to 1 h for two typical LEO clock types,i.***.the ultra-stable oscillator(USO)and the oven-controlled crystal oscillator(OCXO).The prediction is based on GNSS-determined precise clock estimates,where the clock stability is related to the GNSS estimation errors,the behaviors of the oscillators themselves,the systematic effects related to the environment and the relativistic effects,and the stability of the time reference.Based on real data analysis,LEO clocks of the two different types are simulated under different conditions,and a prediction model considering the systematic effects is proposed.Compared to a simple polynomial fitting model usually applied,the proposed model can significantly reduce the prediction errors,i.***.by about 40%-70%in simulations and about 5%-30%for real data containing different miss-modeled effects.For both clock types,short-term prediction of 1 min would result in a root mean square error(RMSE)of a few centimeters when using a very stable time reference.The RMSE amounts to about 0.1 m,when a typical real-time time reference of the national center for space studies(CNES)real-time clocks was used.For long-term prediction of 1 h,the RMSE could range from below 1 m to a few meters for the USOs,depending on the complexity of the miss-modeled effects.For OCXOs,the 1 h prediction could lead to larger errors with an RMSE of about 10 m.

Applying the Theory of Numerical Radius of Operators to Obtain Multi-observable Quantum Uncertainty Relations

Quantum uncertainty relations are mathematical inequalities that describe the lower bound of products of standard deviations of observables(i.e.,bounded or unbounded self-adjoint operators).By revealing a connection between standard deviations of quantum observables and numerical radius of operators,we establish a universal uncertainty relation for k observables,of which the formulation depends on the even or odd quality of k.This universal uncertainty relation is tight at least for the cases k=2 and k=3.For two observables,the uncertainty relation is a simpler reformulation of Schr?dinger’s uncertainty principle,which is also tighter than Heisenberg’s and Robertson’s uncertainty relations.

Calibration of Gridded Wind Speed Forecasts Based on Deep Learning

The challenges of applying deep learning(DL) to correct deterministic numerical weather prediction(NWP) biases with non-Gaussian distributions are discussed in this paper.It is known that the DL UNet model is incapable of correcting the bias of strong winds with the traditional loss functions such as the MSE(mean square error),MAE(mean absolute error),and WMAE(weighted mean absolute error).To solve this,a new loss function embedded with a physical constraint called MAE_MR(miss ratio) is proposed.The performance of the UNet model with MAE_MR is compared to UNet traditional loss functions,and statistical post-processing methods like Kalman filter(KF) and the machine learning methods like random forest(RF) in correcting wind speed biases in gridded forecasts from the ECMWF high-resolution model(HRES) in East China for lead times of 1–7 days.In addition to MAE for full wind speed,wind force scales based on the Beaufort scale are derived and evaluated.Compared to raw HRES winds,the MAE of winds corrected by UNet(MAE_MR) improves by 22.8% on average at 24–168 h,while UNet(MAE),UNet(WMAE),UNet(MSE),RF,and KF improve by 18.9%,18.9%,17.9%,13.8%,and 4.3%,*** with MSE,MAE,and WMAE shows good correction for wind forces 1–3 and 4,but negative correction for 6 or ***(MAE_MR) overcomes this,improving accuracy for forces 1–3,4,5,and 6 or higher by 11.7%,16.9%,11.6%,and 6.4% over HRES.A case study of a strong wind event further shows UNet(MAE_MR) outperforms traditional post-processing in correcting strong wind biases.

Locally repairable codes from combinatorial designs

Locally repairable codes（LRCs） were proposed to reduce the repair degree in distributed storage systems. In particular, LRCs with availability are highly desirable for distributed storage systems, since this kind of codes provide the mechanism of local repair for code symbols and parallel reading of hot data.In this paper, we propose four types of（n, k, r, t）;LRCs from combinatorial designs. We introduce several constructions of LRCs with strict availability and some constructions of distance-optimal LRCs with information-symbol locality. Most of our constructions in this paper are over F;, i.e., they are suitable for implementation.

The sustainability cycle of historic houses and cultural memory: Controversy between historic preservation and heritage conservation

Historic preservation and heritage conservation are two mainstream concepts related to the sustainability and renewal of historic houses.With the aim of enhancing the sustainability of historic houses,this article criticizes the view of historic preservation that insists on preserving historic houses with their old appearances,which does not fully develop their sustainability.In contrast,the article provides support for the view of heritage conservation that aims to promote the sustainability of historic houses and related legislation.In the second and third parts,this article examines the theoretical origin of historic preservation,which emphasizes and summarizes the one-way protection of cultural memory via historic houses.In the fourth part,the article turns to heritage conservation,highlights the sustainable cycle between historic houses and cultural memory,and underlines the advantages of this sustainable cycle.In the fifth part,this article presents a sustainable approach to heritage conservation and related legal safeguards by taking the renewal of historic houses in China’s Bagua Village(or"Eight Diagrams Village")as an example.In the last part,this paper summarizes the theoretical value,practical value and limitations of this article.The findings can facilitate the UN’s sustainable development of social inclusion,economic growth,and environmental protection to promote the heritage legislation and policy of present and future generations.

A transient multiphysics coupling method based on OpenFOAM for heat pipe cooled reactors

Differing from traditional pressurized water reactors(PWRs),heat pipe cooled reactors have the unique characteristics of fuel thermal expansion,expansion reactivity feedback,and thermal contact conductance.These reactors require a new multiphysics coupling method.In this paper,a transient coupling method based on OpenFOAM is proposed.The method considers power variation,thermal expansion,heat pipe operation,thermal contact conductance,and gap conductance.In particular,the reactivity feedback caused by working medium redistribution in a heat pipe is also preliminarily considered.A typical heat pipe cooled reactor KRUSTY(Kilowatt Reactor Using Stirling TechnologY)is chosen as the research object.Compared with experimental results of load following,the calculated results are in good agreement and show the validity of the proposed method.To discuss the self-adjusting capability of this type of reactor system,a hypothetical accident is simulated.It is assumed that at the beginning of this accident,loss of the heat sink occurs.After 1500 s of the transient process,the reactor system recovers immediately.During this hypothetical accident,the control rod is always out of the reactor core,and the reactor only relies on the reactivity feedback to regulate the fission power.According to the simulation,the peak temperature is only about 1112 K,which is far below the safety limit.As for system recovery,the reactor needs approximately 2500 s to return to a steady state and can realize effective power regulation by reactivity feedback.This study confirms the availability of this coupling method and that it can be an effective tool for the simulation of heat pipe cooled reactors.
