The necessity for integrating traditional, complementary, and alternative medicine into medical education curricula in Iran

Background: The use of traditional and complementary medicine (T&CM) is increasing in both developed and developing countries. The school of Persian medicine (PM) in Iran is a comprehensive medical school that is rich in history and has its own special principles, elements, philosophy, and diagnostic and treatment options. Many complementary therapy modalities are also popular and in demand among patients and physicians. The aim of this paper is to provide logic for the policymakers in Iranian medical education to make changes in medical education curricula, particularly on integrating T&CM. Methods: We reviewed the global experience in teaching T&CM to medical students, and highlighting the strengths of PM, described why it is necessary to integrate T&CM into general medicine curricula in Iran. Results: PM is a traditional system of medicine that dates back about 7000 years. Although there are few studies about the safety and effectiveness of PM, research into it has recently been accelerated. There is a suitable opportunity for integrating T&CM with conventional medicine. Physicians should be familiar with T&CM to avoid any contraindications, interactions, and unwanted effects. Conclusion: Traditional medicine is part of Iran's heritage and. thus, needs special attention. Familiarization of physicians with T&CM can help them choose the best treatment options for their patients. To integrate T&CM into the medical education curricula of Iran, a two-credit course has been proposed for implementation across the country.

Therapeutic effects of acupuncture on blood glucose level among patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus: A randomized clinical trial

Objective:To compare the therapeutic effects of acupuncture with sham acupuncture on levels of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) among patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) under treatment with ***:Eighty participants with T2DM were allocated randomly to treatment (n =40) and control (n =40) *** addition to metformin therapy,patients in the acupuncture group received acupoint stimulation with even manipulation at 15 acupoints,and needles were retained for 20 *** sham-acupuncture group was treated with very small needles inserted at a very shallow depth (3-5 mm) without manipulation at non-acupoints 1 cm around the actual acupuncture *** groups were treated for 14 sessions during 10 weeks of *** FPG level was measured before treatment as well as after 1,2,4,6 and 12 weeks of *** HbA1c percentage was assessed once before treatment and once 12 weeks after treatment ***:Levels of FPG and HbA1c in both groups were reduced significantly in comparison with baseline measurements (both P <.01).However,acupuncture treatment led to a significant reduction in the FPG level as compared with sham acupuncture after 4 weeks or 10 sessions of treatment [mean difference (MD) =10.18,95% confidence interval (CI) =1.74 to 18.6,P =.019],after 6 weeks or 12 sessions of treatment (MD =10.53,95% CI =2.22 to 18.83,P =.014) and after 12-week follow-up (MD =8.8,95% Cl =0.66 to 16.94,P =.034).Acupuncture treatment reduced the HbA1c level significantly in comparison with that in the shamacupuncture group (MD =0.27,95%Cl =0.08 to 0.47,P =.007).Conclusion:Our study revealed that acupuncture (as a type of Chinese therapy) combined with metformin (as a conventional hypoglycemic medication) had a greater effect on glycemic control than that elicited in the placebo control ***,acupuncture could be used as adjuvant therapy among patients with T2DM.

Kaiy(medieval cautery)is an ancient method of heat therapy in traditional Persian medicine(TPM).Some of its important applications have been neglected during the medical ***,different treatment modalities that incorporate heat,including moxibustion,have progressed in traditional Chinese *** this study,we reviewed the main TPM textbooks that were written specifically in the field of *** considered the traditional teachings in the context of contemporary information,gathered from the scientific literature about moxibustion and modern *** surgical therapeutic indications of kaiy(e.g.,debridement and coagulative procedures)have been advanced by the innovation of ***,those therapeutic applications that were based on the TPM humoral theory for relieving body coldness or myofascial pains—which are similar to moxibustion usages—have not received the same *** from the broad similarities of kaiy and moxibustion as thermal therapies with similar indications,there is a striking correspondence between kaiy point mapping and ***,further research on different kaiy aspects is recommended.

Semnan province is one of the vast provinces of the country that has a variety of topographical and clamatorial conditions. This province plays a key role in industrial, agricultural and animal husbandry activities. The study of its climate potential with respect to its natural limitations like lack of water resources, soil types, droughts and desertification problems has been considered as a necessity in the province annual planning. In this study, the climatic regionalization of the province is done through using empirical and quantitative methods on climatic data of meteorological stations of the area in statistical period of 1982-2005. Methods of Koppen empirical, De Martonne, Emberger and Dr Karimi have divided the province into 3, 2, 4 and 6 climactic types, respectively. Using principle components and the cluster analysis on 14 climatic elements of 21 stations, 5 climatic types have been specified for the province. Based on this method, temperature, its Diurnal Temperature Range (DTR), precipitation and its type, and humidity contribute a great deal to the climate of the Semnan Province. The main results of this identification of 5 climatic types include hot & dry, dry & hot semi-dry, dry & cold semi-dry, mountainous, and Caspian climate.

Transport of particle suspensions in oil reservoirs is an essential phenomenon in many oil industry processes. Solid and liquid particles dispersed in the drilling fluid (mud) are trapped by the rock (porous medium) and permeability decline takes place during drilling fluid invasion into reservoir resulting in formation damage. The formation damage due to mud filtration is explained by erosion of external filter cake. Nevertheless, the stabilization is observed in core floods, which demonstrates internal erosion. A new mathematical model for detachment of particles is based on mechanical equilibrium of a particle positioned on the internal cake or matrix surface in the pore space. In the current work the analytical solution obtained to mud filtration with one particle capture mechanism with damage stabilization. The particle torque equilibrium is determined by the dimensionless ratio between the drag and normal forces acting on the particle. The maximum retention function of the dimensionless ratio closes system of governing equations for colloid transport through porous medium.

According to the world tourism organization (WHO) in 2005, the number of tourists has increased up to 36 times. In a way that it has maximized from 25 million in 1950 to 1018 million in 2010. The sustainable tourism, thus, because of making a balance between different environmental, economic, cultural and social dimensions of the tourism development, plays a considerable role in protection of species diversity, and benefits the tourism activists in order to reduce its destructive impact on the environment and the local cultures and being kept for the future generations. Accordingly, the present research first examines the relationship between tourism, sustainable development and the ecology, for measurement of different aspects of the industry effect on the environment. Secondly, the present study uses from some parameters like the average monthly minimum and maximum temperatures, the average relative humidity, the average maximum and minimum temperatures in day and at night in the Semnan station as well as using the common diagram in the experimental methods like Olegi to assess day and night Climatourism in the region. Finally, on the basis of the performed analysis, the strengths and weak points of tourist attractions for the protection of the environment are considered.

An internal solitary wave of elevation in a two-layer density stratified system of an incompressible, viscous and homogeneous fluid was studied. The run-up of a wave of elevation encountering different slopes was investigated numerically based on solving the continuity, Navier-Stokes and convective-diffusion equations within the Boussinesq approximation. The commercial software COMSOL Multiphysics was used to conduct the numerical simulations. For gradual shoals, a bolus formed that transported dense fluid up the shoal. The bolus disappeared when it reached its maximum height on the slope due to the draining of the dense fluid. Various shoal angles were simulated to detect the critical angle above which a bolus does not form. An angle of 30 or less resulted in the formation of a bolus. In addition, the simulations demonstrated that the size of the bolus induced by shallower slopes was larger and that the vertical height traveled by the bolus was insensitive to the slope of the shoal.
