Genetic gains with genomic versus phenotypic selection for drought and waterlogging tolerance in tropical maize(Zea mays L.)

Erratic rainfall often results in intermittent drought and/or waterlogging and limits maize(Zea mays L.)productivity in many parts of the Asian *** climate-resilient maize germplasm possessing tolerance to these key abiotic stresses without a yield penalty under optimal growing conditions is a challenge for breeders working in stress-vulnerable agro-ecologies in the *** stress-resilient maize for rainfed stress-prone ecologies is identified as one of the priority areas for CIMMYT-Asia maize *** applied rapid cycle genomic selection(RCGS)on two multiparent yellow synthetic populations(MYS-1 and MYS-2)to improve grain yield simultaneously under drought and waterlogging conditions using genomic-estimated breeding values(GEBVs).Also,the populations were simultaneously advanced using recurrent phenotypic selection(PS)by exposing them to managed drought and waterlogging and intermating tolerant plants from the two selection *** cycles per se(C1,C2,and C3)of the two populations developed using RCGS and PS approach and their test-cross progenies were evaluated separately in multilocation trials under managed drought,waterlogging,and optimal moisture *** genetic gains were observed with both GS and PS,except with PS in MYS-2 under drought and with GS in MYS-1 under *** genetic gains from GS were relatively higher under drought conditions(110 and 135 kg ha^(-1) year^(-1))compared to waterlogging(38 and 113 kg ha^(-1) year^(-1))in both MYS-1 and MYS-2,***,under waterlogging stress PS showed at par or better than GS as gain per year with PS was 80 and 90 kg ha^(-1),whereas with GS it was 90 and 43 kg ha^(-1) for MYS-1 and MYS-2,*** findings suggested that careful constitution of a multiparent population by involving trait donors for targeted stresses,along with elite highyielding parents from diverse genetic background,and its improvement using RCGS is an effe

Genotype specific peripheral lipid profile changes with hepatitis C therapy

AIM To evaluate magnitude/direction of changes in peripheral lipid profiles in patients undergoing direct acting therapy for hepatitis C by *** Mono-infected patients with hepatitis C were treated with guideline-based DAAs at a university-based liver clinic. Patient characteristics and laboratory values were collected before and after the treatment period. Baseline demographics included age, ethnicity, hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, treatment regimen, and fibrosis stage. Total cholesterol(TCHOL), high density lipoprotein(HDL), low density lipoprotein(LDL), triglycerides(TG), and liver function tests were measured prior to treatment and ETR. Changes in lipid and liver function were evaluated by subgroups with respect to genotype. Mean differences were calculated for each lipid profile and liver function component(direction/magnitude). The mean differences in lipid profiles were then compared between genotypes for differences in direction/magnitude. Lipid profile and liver function changes were evaluated with Levene's test and student's t test. Mean differences in lipid profiles were compared between genotypes using ANOVA, post hoc analysis via the Bonferroni correction or Dunnett *** Three hundred and seventy five patients enrolled with 321(85.6%) achieving sustained-viral response at 12 wk. 72.3% were genotype 1(GT1), 18.1% genotype 2(GT2), 9.7% genotype 3(GT3). Baseline demographics were similar. Significant change in lipid profiles were seen with GT1 and GT3(ΔGT1, p and ΔGT3, p), with TCHOL increasing(+5.3, P = 0.005 and +16.1, P < 0.001), HDL increasing(+12.5, P < 0.001 and +7.9, P = 0.038), LDL increasing(+7.4, P = 0.058 and +12.5, P < 0.001), and TG decreasing(-5.9, P = 0.044 and-9.80 P = 0.067). Among genotypes(ΔGT1 v. ΔGT2 v. ΔGT3, ANOVA), significant mean differences were seen with TCHOL(+5.3 v. +0.1 v. +16.1, P = 0.017) and HDL(+12.3 v. +2 v. +7.9, P = 0.040). Gastroenterology training in a resource-limited setting: Zambia, Southern Africa

AIM: To evaluate need for and efficacy of a structured gastroenterology didactic session in expanding awareness and understanding of digestive disorders. METHODS: A four-day symposium was developed with didactic sessions (days 1, 2) and practical endoscopy (days 3, 4). Didactic sessions included case presentations highlighting pathophysiology and management. One nurse and four practicing gastroenterologists from the United Kingdom led lectures and supervised work-shops with audience participation. Practical endoscopy focused on diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and their application to diagnosis and treatment of ailments of the gastrointestinal tract. Preand post-workshop questionnaires were distributed to participants during didactic sessions. A pre-workshop questionnaire gauged expectations and identified objectives to be met at thesymposium. Post-workshop questionnaires were administered to assess efficacy of each session. Participants graded sessions from 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent) on quality of case presentations, knowledge, clarity and mode of presentation. We assessed if time allotted to each topic was sufficient, value of sessions, impact on practice and interest in future symposiums. RESULTS: There were 46 attendees on day 1: 41% undergraduates, 41% residents, 11% consultants and 4% unspecified. Day 2 (a Saturday) had 24 participants: 17% undergraduates, 71% residents, 9% consultants, 4% unspecified. Primary pre-workshop symposium expectation was to gain knowledge in: general gastroenterology (55.5%), practical endoscopy (13.8%), pediatric gastroenterology (5%), epidemiology of gastrointestinal disorders specific to Zambia (6%), and interaction with international speakers (6%). The post-symposium questionnaire was answered by 19 participants, of whom 95% felt specific aims were met; all would attend future conferences and recommend to others. The robot-assisted ureteral reconstruction in adult:A narrative review on the surgical techniques and contemporary outcomes

Despite the rapid increase in the use of robotic surgery in urology,the majority of ureteric reconstruction procedures are still performed using laparoscopic or open *** is primarily due to uncertainty regarding the advantages of robotic approaches over conventional ones,and the unique difficulty in identifying the specific area of interest due to the lack of tactile feedback from the current robotic ***,with the potential benefits of minimal invasiveness,several pioneering reports have been published on robotic surgery in *** reviewing the literature on this topic,we aimed to summarize the techniques,considerations,and consistent findings regarding robotic ureteral reconstruction in *** applications for ureteral surgery have been primarily reported for pediatric urology,especially in the context of relieving a congenital obstruction in the ureteral pelvic ***,contemporary studies have also consistently demonstrated that robotic surgery could be a reliable option for malignant,iatrogenic,and traumatic conditions,which generally occur in adult ***,the lack of comparative studies on heterogeneous hosts and disease conditions make it difficult to determine the benefit of the robotic approach over the conventional approach in the general population;thus,qualified prospective trials are needed for wider ***,contemporary reports have demonstrated that the robotic approach could be an alternative option for ureteral construction,even in the absence of haptic feedback,which can be compensated by various surgical techniques and enhanced three-dimensional visualization.

Robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy(RARP)is the current standard of care with long term cure in organ-confined *** introduction of nerve-sparing(NS)to standard RARP has shown positive results in terms of functional outcomes in addition to the oncological *** article reviews the current perspectives of NS-RARP in terms of applied anatomy of the prostatic fascial planes,the neurovascular bundle(NVB),various NS techniques and postoperative functional outcomes.A non-systematic review was done using PubMed,Embase and Medline databases to retrieve and analyse articles in English,with following keywords“prostate cancer”,“robotic radical prostatectomy”,“nerve-sparing”.The Delphi method was used with an expert panel of robotic surgeons in urology to analyse the potency outcomes of various published comparative and non-comparative *** literature has shown that NS-RARP involves various techniques and approaches while there is a lack of randomized studies to suggest the superiority of one over the *** such as preoperative risk assessments,baseline potency,surgical anatomy of individual patients and surgeons’expertise play a major role in the outcomes.A tailored approach for each patient is required for applying the NS approach during RARP.
