Outlier detection by means of robust regression estimators for use in engineering science

This study compares the ability of different robust regression estimators to detect and classify outliers. Well-known estimators with high breakdown points were compared using simulated data. Mean success rates (MSR) were computed and used as comparison criteria. The results showed that the least median of squares (LMS) and least trimmed squares (LTS) were the most successful methods for data that included leverage points, masking and swamping effects or critical and concentrated outliers. We recommend using LMS and LTS as diagnostic tools to classify outliers, because they remain robust even when applied to models that are heavily contaminated or that have a complicated structure of outliers.

Background:Burn related injuries from natural disasters are not wel described and natural disasters are not identified as an etiology of burn injury in the National Burn Repository(NBR)of the American Burn *** natural disaster Super Storm Hurricane Sandy had devastating *** goal was to detail the burn related injuries fol owing this natural disaster and to compare the data to the ***:This was a retrospective chart review of thirty four patients who sustained burn related injuries following Super Storm Hurricane Sandy(SSHS)and were managed at Staten Island University Hospital Burn *** Review Board approval was *** variables included age,gender,race,past medical history(PMHx),burn type,percentage total body surface area(%TBSA),hospital length of stay(HLOS),and *** compared data from SSHS to the 2003-2013 *** data were summarized using frequency counts,percentages and Clopper-Pearson 95%confidence interval for *** outcome data were summarized by descriptive *** analyses performed with SAS?System Version 9.3(SAS Institute Inc.,Cary,NC)and p<0.05 was ***:In the SSHS group,average age was 36+24 years,range 1-80 years,and 44.1%were males(15/34,95%CI:27.2-62.1).Caucasians comprised 58.8%,(20/34,95%CI:40.7,75.4)and 73.5%had no PMHx(25/34,95%CI:55.6,87.1).The most common burn type was scald,55.9%,(19/34,95%CI:37.9,72.8)and%TBSA ranged 1%–47%,average of 7%+12%.The average HLOS was 13+26 days,range of 1–113 *** was 2.9%(1/34,95%CI:0.07–15).In comparison,the NBR reported an average age of 32 years and 69%were *** comprised 59.1%.The most common burn type was flame,43.2%and the%TBSA ranged 1%–9.9%.HLOS ranged 8.4–10.2 days and mortality was 3.4%.Conclusion:We conclude that burn related injuries following a natural disaster differ as compared to those most commonly reported in the NBR.

Globally,fish are frequently introduced beyond their native ***,like Ponto-Caspian gobies,are becoming invasive,achieving high colo-nization rates and constituting frequent prey for native ***,little is known about the effectiveness of antipredator behaviors of the invaders,which may shape their role in the invaded community and contribute to the invasion *** compared antipredator behaviors of invasive gobies and native fish species after their detection by the predator,when the danger becomes *** studied 2 fish pairs,each consisting of an invasive and native species co-occurring in the environment and belonging to the same prey guild:(1)the racer goby Babka gymnotrachelus versus European bulhead Cottus gobio,(2)the monkey goby Neogobius fluviatilis versus gudgeon Gobio gobio,facing a naive predator(the Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis).We analyzed behaviors of single prey individuals(escaping,staying in shelter,and activity)and sin-gle predators(activity,searching,following,capturing,and latency to prey consumption).In the predator presence,the bullhead was less active and more often managed to escape after capture than the racer *** gudgeon escaped before the capture more often than the monkey *** predator succeeded later with the bullhead compared to racer goby,whereas no differences in ingestion time occurred between the gudgeon and monkey *** results suggest that,in terms of hunting effort of native predators,the invasive gobies are equivalent to or more profitable prey than their native analogs,which can facilitate the integration of the gobies into local food webs.

Spinal Cord Compression by Thoracic Vertebral Hemangioma—A Case Report

A 68 year old with lower extremity numbness, vibratory sensation loss, coldness and burning of his feet, unsteady gait, frequent falls and a sensory level had an MRI demonstrating aT7 and T8 vertebral body/posterior element lesion with epidural extension, cord compression and foraminal extension (Figures 1-5). Decompressive laminectomy/resection confirmed vertebral hemangioma, a common benign neoplasm that typically remains asymptomatic, found incidentally in 10% of the population. Progressive vertebral body hemangiomas may cause cord or nerve root compression due to epidural tumor extension, expanded bone, hematoma or fracture. Radiographs demonstrate course vertical striations caused by thick trabeculae. CT in indolent lesions demonstrates fat density while compressive lesions demonstrate soft tissue density. Indolent lesions follow fat signal on MRI;symptomatic lesions are T1 isointense/T2 hyperintense. Work-up for aggressive hemangiomas includes angiography to determine vascularity, identify feeding/draining vessels and identify blood supply to the cord. Biopsy helps differentiate hemangioma, lymphoma, myeloma or metastasis. Management of symptomatic hemangiomas includes vertebroplasty for pain, radiation for pain, compression or pre-op and decompressive laminectomy for epidural disease. Embolization of feeding vessels may be performed pre-op or may be curative. Hemangioma causing cord compression and neurologic symptoms by extraosseous extension is much less common than benign hemangioma. Imaging features may suggest potential for progression.

CXT is a rare inherited autosomal recessive lipid storage disease due to the impaired metabolic pathway of cholesterol secondary to a deficiency in 27- sterol hydroxylase, an enzyme in the synthesis of chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA), a primary bile acid. Abnormal bile acid synthesis leads to elevated plasma Cholestanol (a derivative of cholesterol) accumulation, especially in the lens, central nervous system (CNS) and tendons.

Cobb Syndrome: A Case Report with Review of Clinical and Imaging Findings

Cobb syndrome is a rare entity characterized by cutaneous vascular lesions and arteriovenous malformations in the spine, both in the same metamere. This syndrome is also known as cutaneous vertebral medullary angiomatosis, cutaneomeningospinal angiomatosis, and spinal arterial metameric disorder. We report the case of a male infant diagnosed with Cobb syndrome who was treated surgically. The presence of a cutaneous vascular lesion in this patient prompted subsequent imaging for spinal angioma or AVM in the same dermatome. Early recognition in this patient was shown to be life-changing, as patients with Cobb syndrome who have undergone early intervention have shown to be without neurologic deficit or have a halt in progression of symptoms.

A 12-year-old boy presented to his primary care physician with a painful lump at the angle of the left mandible after being kicked in the jaw during a soccer game. Over the next 2 months the lesion became progressively firmer and fine needle aspiration was attempted. Results were non-diagnostic. Panorex examination revealed a calcified mass contiguous with the left angle of the mandible. Considerations were bony callus secondary to trauma versus a calcified hematoma. A maxillofacial CT showed multiple diffuse craniofacial osseous lesions including the clinically suspected region at the left angle of the mandible. Imaging findings were consistent with multiple craniofacial osteomas and workup for Gardner Syndrome was initiated. Genetic testing was subsequently positive for Familial Adenomatous Polyposis.

A 22 year old six month pregnant female presented with right eye tearing, proptosis and nasal congestion. CT revealed a large right nasal cavity mass with involvement of the ethmoids, right maxillary sinus, lamina papyracea, cribriform plate and nasal septum. There was significant remodeling of the right cribriform plate with mild extra-axial intracranial and mild intraorbital extension. Transnasal endoscopic excision confirming the diagnosis of cavernous hemangioma of the nasal cavity. Hemangiomas are benign slow-growing vascular neoplasms classified as capillary, cavernous or mixed. Hemangiomas of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are very rare with only a few reported cases. The occurrence and growth of these lesions during pregnancy may be related to increased blood volume or hormonal factors. The most common therapeutic option is complete surgical resection via transnasal endoscopic approach. Pre-operative embolization may be utilized in some cases to decrease the risk of intraoperative bleeding.

十九世纪末在法国出现了象征主义潮流。它影响了全世界的诗人。象征主义打破了旧的写诗的传统,给文学世界带来新的诗歌。乌克兰和中国的诗人也受了法国象征主义的影响。本文的研究对象是中国的李金发和乌克兰的马克西姆·瑞斯基的诗歌象征。两国诗人吸收了法国象征主义的原则和意象系统,但这不妨他们创造自己独特的诗。本论文通过两人写诗方法和意象系统的比较,具体指出法国象征主义对其诗艺产生的影响。本论文研究方向是指出两国象征派共同的表现方式。本论文以比较法为研究基础。在李金发和瑞斯基的例子上显示出象征不同表现的可能。本文的结语部分,从中乌文化传统中分别存在的两种不同态度,总结象征派诗歌的形式特色、内容的主观因素等,对象征派诗歌在中国和乌克兰的接受情况进行描述。因此,本论文创新在于通过两国写诗方法和意象系统的比较具体指出象征主义艺术不同趋向的发展。
