The profile of sound speed and dissolved oxygen in the polymetallic nodules depositional area in the Western Pacific

With the consumption of terrestrial metal resources,the exploitation of deep-sea polymetallic nodule minerals has been widely concerned around the world.Therefore,the environmental impact of deep-sea polymetallic nodule mining cannot be ignored.However,duo to the lacks in stable and safe deep-sea(the depth>1000 m)vertical profile observation systems and consequently in long-term in-situ observation data,the sound speed and dissolved oxygen and the other water environment factors in the deposition areas of polymetallic nodules remains poorly understood.In this study,a deep-sea in-situ observation system was designed and deployed,and the water environment data of the polymetallic nodule deposition area were collected and analyzed.Result shows that the dissolved oxygen in the depth of 0–600 m was mainly affected by biological factors,while that in the area deeper than 600 m was affected by physical factors.The sound speed in the water body was mainly affected by temperature and pressure.At depths below 840 m,the sound speed is mainly controlled by temperature,and at depths between 840 m and 5700 m,the sound speed is mainly controlled by pressure.The correlations of sound speed vs.pressure and vs.temperature were regressed into equation.The resuspension of sediments rich in various metals may result in the reduction of dissolved oxygen and the improvement of redox potential.This environmental impact caused by a single sediment resuspension could last for 24 h or more.These findings enrich the understanding of the background value of the water environment in the polymetallic nodule deposition area.

In this paper,a linearized energy stable numerical scheme is used to solve the modified Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes model,which is a phase-field model for two-phase incompressible flows.The time discretization is based on the convex splitting of the energy functional,which leads to a linearized system.In order to maintain the energy stability,the definition domain of energy function is extended to infinity.The stability of the scheme is proved and the error estimate is given.Numerical experiments are done to demonstrate the effectiveness for the proposed scheme.

Thecoal-to-liquidcoupledwithcarbon capture,utilization,and storage technology has the potential to reduce CO_(2)emissions,but its carbon footprint and cost assessment are still insufficient.In this paper,coal mining to oil production is taken as a life cycle to evaluate the carbon footprint and levelized costs of direct-coal-toliquid and indirect-coal-to-liquid coupled with the carbon capture utilization and storage technology under three scenarios:non capture,process capture,process and public capture throughout the life cycle.The results show that,first,the coupling carbon capture utilization and storage technology can reduce CO_(2)footprint by 28%-57%from 5.91 t CO_(2)/t:oil of direct-coal-to-liquid and 24%-49%from 7.10 t CO_(2)/t:oil of indirect-coal-to-liquid.Next,the levelized cost of direct-coal-to-liquid is 648-1027$/t of oil,whereas that of indirect-coal-to-liquid is 653-1065$/t of oil.When coupled with the carbon capture utilization and storage technology,the levelized cost of direct-coalto-liquid is 285-1364$/t of oil,compared to 1101-9793/t of oil for indirect-coal-to-liquid.Finally,sensitivity analysis shows that CO_(2)transportation distance has the greatest impact on carbon footprint,while coal price and initial investment cost significantly affect the levelized cost ofcoal-to-liquid.

Microcapsule-enabled self-healing concrete:A bibliometric analysis

With the development of self-healing technology, the overall properties of the microcapsule-enabled selfhealingconcrete have taken a giant leap. In this research, a detailed assessment of current research on the microcapsuleenabledself-healing concrete is conducted, together with bibliometric analysis. In the bibliometric analysis, variousindicators are considered. The current state of progress regarding self-healing concrete is assessed, and an analysis of thetemporal distribution of documents, organizations and countries of literature is conducted. Later, a discussion of thecitations is analyzed. The research summarizes the improvements of microcapsule-enabled self-healing cementitiouscomposites and provides a concise background overview.

Mechanisms of Acupuncture in Improving Alzheimer's Disease Caused by Mitochondrial Damage

Alzheimer's disease(AD)is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases among the elderly and it accounts for nearly 80%of all dementias.The pathogenesis of AD is complicated and enigmatic thus far.The mitochondrial cascade hypothesis assumes that mitochondrial damage may mediate,drive,or contribute to a variety of AD pathologies and may be the main factor in late-onset AD.Currently,there are no widely recognized drugs able to attenuate mitochondrial damage in AD.Notably,increasing evidence supports the efficacy of acupuncture for improving the mitochondrial structure and protecting mitochondrial functions in AD.This review reports the mechanisms by which acupuncture regulates mitochondrial dynamics,energy metabolism,calcium homeostasis and apoptosis.In conclusion,these findings suggest that AD mitochondrial dysfunction represents a reasonable therapeutic target and acupuncture could play a significant role in preventing and treating AD.

Use of sIgE/T-IgE in Predicting Systemic Reactions: Retrospective Analysis of 54 Honeybee Venom Allergy Cases in North China

Background: Venom allergy is significantly underestimated in China. Venom-specific IgE may not provide accurate clinical reactions. Our conducted retrospective analysis observes alternative diagnostic considerations in assessing confirmation and severity of honeybee venom allergy.Methods: Retrospective review of honeybee venom allergy versus nonallergy patients presented with positive honeybee venom (i1) sIgE results. According to clinically observed reactions caused by a honeybee sting, patients were divided into three groups. Patient residence and exposure types were analyzed. The sIgE/T-IgE among allergy and control groups was compared.Results: Gender ratio male:female was 32:22; median age was 39 years (31, 50). 48% (26/54) of patients live in urban areas, 52% (28/54) in rural areas. Based on bee sting reactions, patients were divided into common localized reactions (32/54), large localized reactions (7/54), and systemic reactions (15/54). In the systemic reaction group, patients presented as Type II (6/15), Type III (6/15). There is significant difference (P lized reactions before onset of system symptoms 1 month to 1 year of being stung.Conclusions: Occupational exposure is the most common cause in honeybee venom allergy induced systemic reactions. The use of sIgE/T-IgE results is a useful diagnostic parameter in determining honeybee venom allergy.

Nonlinearity-enabled higher-order exceptional singularities with ultra-enhanced signal-to-noise ratio

Higher-order exceptional points(HOEPs) with extraordinary responsivity are expected to exhibit a vastly improved performance in detection-related applications.However,over the past few years,such an approach has been questioned due to several potential drawbacks,including the stringent parameter re quirements,fundamental resolution limits and noise.Here,exploring the conse quence of nonlinear gain saturation in exceptional singularities of non-Hermitian systems,we offer a feasible scheme to overcome all the above difficulties.We provide a simple and intuitive example by demonstrating with both theory and circuit experiments an ’exceptional nexus’(’EX’),a HOEP with an ultra-enhanced signal-to-noise ratio(SNR),in only two coupled resonators with the aid of nonlinear gain.The tedious parameter tuning in a six-dimensional hyper-dimensional space is reduced to two dimensions.The feedback mechanism of nonlinear saturable gain can give a solution to the ongoing debate on the SNR of EPs in other linear systems.Our findings advance the fundamental understanding of the peculiar topology of nonlinear non-Hermitian systems,significantly reduce the practical difficulty in EP sensing and possibly open new avenues for applications.

Icariin accelerates bone regeneration by inducing osteogenesisangiogenesis coupling in rats with type 1 diabetes mellitus

BACKGROUND Icariin(ICA),a natural flavonoid compound monomer,has multiple pharmacological activities.However,its effect on bone defect in the context of type 1 diabetes mellitus(T1DM)has not yet been examined.AIM To explore the role and potential mechanism of ICA on bone defect in the context of T1DM.METHODS The effects of ICA on osteogenesis and angiogenesis were evaluated by alkaline phosphatase staining,alizarin red S staining,quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction,Western blot,and immunofluorescence.Angiogenesis-related assays were conducted to investigate the relationship between osteogenesis and angiogenesis.A bone defect model was established in T1DM rats.The model rats were then treated with ICA or placebo and micron-scale computed tomography,histomorphometry,histology,and sequential fluorescent labeling were used to evaluate the effect of ICA on bone formation in the defect area.RESULTS ICA promoted bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell(BMSC)proliferation and osteogenic differentiation.The ICA treated-BMSCs showed higher expression levels of osteogenesis-related markers(alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin)and angiogenesis-related markers(vascular endothelial growth factor A and platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule 1)compared to the untreated group.ICA was also found to induce osteogenesis-angiogenesis coupling of BMSCs.In the bone defect model T1DM rats,ICA facilitated bone formation and CD31hiEMCNhi type H-positive capillary formation.Lastly,ICA effectively accelerated the rate of bone formation in the defect area.CONCLUSION ICA was able to accelerate bone regeneration in a T1DM rat model by inducing osteogenesis-angiogenesis coupling of BMSCs.

Airway management is important for critically ill patients.Improper airway management can directly threaten the life of patients.[1]Early correct airway assessment and effective airway management can improve patient prognosis.[2]Coughing ability plays an important role in the decision-making process of airway management.Patients with impaired coughing ability have a higher risk of tracheal intubation during treatment.The concept of cough strength was first proposed by Khamiees in 2001,[3]but the evaluation criteria did not include coughing ability.The purpose of this study was to assess patients’coughing ability through the Delphi method and expert consultation,to provide data support for establishing a cough reflex intensity score and to construct an advanced airway management model for quick and eff ective evaluation.[4,5]

Effect of the micro vortex generator on the characteristics of vaporized RP-3 kerosene combustion in supersonic flows

To investigate the characteristics of vaporized RP-3 kerosene combustion in a scramjet combustor enhanced by the micro vortex generator(MVG),a series of experiments are carried out based on the advanced combustion diagnosis technique.The high-enthalpy incoming flow is accelerated to supersonic through a Mach 2.52 nozzle,the total pressure and temperature of which are 1.6 MPa and 1486 K,respectively.The effect of MVG on the ignition process,flame distribution,and combustor pressure along the bottom wall is well revealed,and the effects of the position and number of MVGs on stable combustion performance are analyzed.The results indicate that the development processes of the initial flame kernel with and without an MVG during ignition process show a similar behavior.The installation of an MVG can lift the shear layer,promote the penetration of flame deeper into the mainstream,and expand the area of the reactive region.Reducing the distance between the MVG and the injection position and increasing the number of MVGs are regarded as effective ways of improving the mixing degree of fuel and air with a resultant intensification of chemical reactions and flame luminescence.The effect of mixing and subsequent combustion is enhanced by shortening the distance between the MVG and the injection position.As the layout schemes of the MVG vary,the pressure distribution between the injection position and the leading edge of the cavity changes considerably,while that in the cavity remains almost constant.Increasing the number of MVGs is also beneficial for improving the premixed degree of fuel and incoming flow and results in more violent chemical reactions downstream of the cavity.
