DEAR EDITOR, We provide an annotated checklist of the butterflies of Yunnan, which includes 356 genera and 1 300 species in six families. The number of butterfly genera and species in Yunnan accounts for 79.8% and 58.6% of China’s total records, respectively. Thus, our study reveals that Yunnan has the highest butterfly diversity in China. This updated checklist also reports two genera and 18 species newly recorded from China as well as 36 species first recorded from Yunnan.

This article presents a list of insect types preserved in Kunming Natural History Museum of Zoology （KNHMZ）. As of March, 2015, 3412 type specimens belonging to 266 species/subspecies of 37 families in 9 orders （Odonata, Isoptera, Mantodea, Orthoptera, Hemiptera, Coleoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera and Lepidoptera） are included. Information corrections of some specimens are provided in this article.

Telomeres are nucleoprotein structures located at the end of each chromosome,which function in terminal protection and genomic stability.Telomeric damage is closely related to replicative senescence in vitro and physical aging in vivo.As relatively long-lived mammals based on body size,bats display unique telomeric patterns,including the upregulation of genes involved in alternative lengthening of telomeres(ALT),DNA repair,and DNA replication.At present,however,the relevant molecular mechanisms remain unclear.In this study,we performed cross-species comparison and identified EPAS1,a well-defined oxygen response gene,as a key telomeric protector in bat fibroblasts.Bat fibroblasts showed high expression of EPAS1,which enhanced the transcription of shelterin components TRF1 and TRF2,as well as DNA repair factor RAD50,conferring bat fibroblasts with resistance to senescence during long-term consecutive expansion.Based on a human single-cell transcriptome atlas,we found that EPAS1 was predominantly expressed in the human pulmonary endothelial cell subpopulation.Using in vitro-cultured human pulmonary endothelial cells,we confirmed the functional and mechanistic conservation of EPAS1 in telomeric protection between bats and humans.In addition,the EPAS1 agonist M1001 was shown to be a protective compound against bleomycin-induced pulmonary telomeric damage and senescence.In conclusion,we identified a potential mechanism for regulating telomere stability in human pulmonary diseases associated with aging,drawing insights from the longevity of bats.

目的探讨姜黄素对关节软骨中转化生长因子-β1/信号转导蛋白Smad(TGF-β1/Smad2)通路的调节作用,及对软骨细胞增殖、凋亡、细胞外基质(ECM)合成和降解的影响。方法将细胞分成对照组,模型组,姜黄素组,TGF-β抑制剂组和姜黄素+抑制剂组,共5组。采用细胞计数试剂盒-8(CCK-8)检测细胞活性,采用流式细胞术检测细胞凋亡,采用Western Blot检测细胞中B细胞淋巴瘤2蛋白(Bcl-2)、Bcl-2相关X蛋白(Bax)、TGF-β1、Smad2、磷酸化Smad2(p-Smad2)、基质金属蛋白酶-13(MMP-13)、Ⅱ型胶原蛋白(COL2α1)的蛋白表达,qRT-PCR检测MMP-13、COL2α1 mRNA表达。结果姜黄素对白介素1β(IL-1β)诱导构建的骨关节炎(OA)细胞模型的最佳干预量为10μmol/L。与对照组比较,模型组细胞增殖能力下降(P<0.05),凋亡率上升(P<0.05),Bcl-2、TGF-β1、p-Smad2蛋白表达均下调(P<0.05),COL2α1 mRNA和蛋白表达均下调(P<0.05),Bax蛋白、MMP-13 mRNA和蛋白表达均上调(P<0.05)。与模型组比较,姜黄素组细胞增殖能力上升(P<0.05),凋亡率下降(P<0.05),Bcl-2、TGF-β1、Smad2蛋白表达均上调(P<0.05),COL2α1 mRNA和蛋白表达均上调(P<0.05),Bax蛋白、MMP-13 mRNA和蛋白表达均下调(P<0.05),TGF-β抑制剂处理加重了模型组细胞的损伤。与TGF-β抑制剂组比较,姜黄素+抑制剂组数据变化呈相反结果(P<0.05)。结论姜黄素能改善IL-1β诱导的关节软骨细胞损伤,减轻细胞凋亡,进而抑制ECM降解,其机制可能与激活TGF-β1/Smad2通路有关。

Fatigue reliability-based design optimization of aeroengine structures involves multiple repeated calculations of reliability degree and large-scale calls of implicit high-nonlinearity limit state function,leading to the traditional direct Monte Claro and surrogate methods prone to unacceptable computing efficiency and accuracy.In this case,by fusing the random subspace strategy and weight allocation technology into bagging ensemble theory,a random forest(RF)model is presented to enhance the computing efficiency of reliability degree;moreover,by embedding the RF model into multilevel optimization model,an efficient RF-assisted fatigue reliability-based design optimization framework is developed.Regarding the low-cycle fatigue reliability-based design optimization of aeroengine turbine disc as a case,the effectiveness of the presented framework is validated.The reliabilitybased design optimization results exhibit that the proposed framework holds high computing accuracy and computing efficiency.The current efforts shed a light on the theory/method development of reliability-based design optimization of complex engineering structures.

Spider silks are well known for their exceptional mechanical properties that are tougher than Kevlar and steel.However,the restricted production amounts from their native sources limit applications of spider silks.Over the decades,there have been significant interests in fabricating man-made silk fibers with comparable performance to natural silks,inspiring many efforts both for biosynthesizing recombinant spider silk proteins(spidroins)in amenable heterologous hosts and biomimetic spinning of artificial spider silks.These strategies provide promising routes to produce high-performance and functionally optimized fibers with diverse applications.Herein,we summarize the hosts that have been applied to produce recombinant spidroins.In addition,the fabrication and mechanical properties of recombinant spidroin fibers and their composite fibers are also introduced.Furthermore,we demonstrate the applications of recombinant spidroin-based fibers.Finally,facing the challenges in biosynthesis,scalable production,and hierarchical assembly of high-performance recombinant spidroins,we give a summary and perspective on future development.

Performance Enhancement of Parabolic Trough Collector by Using Homogenizer and Spiral

In conventional parabolic trough collectors(PTCs),sunlight is concentrated at the bottom of the absorber tube,resulting in a significant circumferential temperature gradient across the absorber tube,heat loss and thermal deformation,which affects the safety and thermal performance of PTCs.In this study,a new receiver with homogenizer and spiral(RHS) is proposed,achieving the optical and thermal synergy to ameliorate the thermal deformation of the absorber tube and enhance thermal efficiency.A plane structure homogenizer is designed to improve uniformity of the concentrated solar flux of absorber tube through second reflection.In combination with the spiral,it improves the optical-thermal efficiency of the PTC by enhancing heat exchange between the fluid and the backlight side of the absorber tube.The performance of the collector is numerically studied by building a three-dimensional coupled light-thermal-structure model.The results show that the thermal deformation of the RHS is reduced by more than 96% and the optical-thermal efficiency is improved by 1.2%-0.63% compared with conventional receivers(CRs) under the same inlet temperature conditions.The proposed receiver is validated to be effective in reducing thermal deformation and improving optical-thermal efficiency.

Personalized assessment and training of neurosurgical skills in virtual reality:An interpretable machine learning approach

Background Virtual reality technology has been widely used in surgical simulators,providing new opportunities for assessing and training surgical skills.Machine learning algorithms are commonly used to analyze and evaluate the performance of participants.However,their interpretability limits the personalization of the training for individual participants.Methods Seventy-nine participants were recruited and divided into three groups based on their skill level in intracranial tumor resection.Data on the use of surgical tools were collected using a surgical simulator.Feature selection was performed using the Minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance and SVM-RFE algorithms to obtain the final metrics for training the machine learning model.Five machine learning algorithms were trained to predict the skill level,and the support vector machine performed the best,with an accuracy of 92.41%and Area Under Curve value of 0.98253.The machine learning model was interpreted using Shapley values to identify the important factors contributing to the skill level of each participant.Results This study demonstrates the effectiveness of machine learning in differentiating the evaluation and training of virtual reality neurosurgical performances.The use of Shapley values enables targeted training by identifying deficiencies in individual skills.Conclusions This study provides insights into the use of machine learning for personalized training in virtual reality neurosurgery.The interpretability of the machine learning models enables the development of individualized training programs.In addition,this study highlighted the potential of explanatory models in training external skills.

AIM:To investigate the protective effects,antioxidant potential,and anti-inflammatory mechanisms of eicosane on glutamate-induced cell damage and on N-methyl-Daspartate(NMDA)-induced retinal ganglion cell(RGC)injury in a mouse model of glaucoma.METHODS:The protective effects of eicosane on the rat R28 retinal precursor cell line were assessed using cell counting kit-8 assays and Hoechst-propidium iodide staining.Intracellular reactive oxygen species(ROS)production was measured using the fluorescent probe 2'-7'-dichlorofluorescin diacetate and flow cytometry.The protective role of eicosane on NMDA-induced RGC injury in a mouse glaucoma model was determined by immunostaining of frozen sections of retina.The effects of eicosane on the metabolome of the retina in mice with NMDA-induced RGC damage were evaluated by liquid chromatographymass spectroscopy(LC-MS)and untargeted metabolomics analyses.RESULTS:Eicosane treatment significantly attenuated glutamate-induced damage to R28 cells in vitro.Eicosane also protected RGCs against NMDA-induced injury in a mouse glaucoma model.Untargeted metabolomics analyses showed that eicosane increased multiple metabolites,including L-arginine and L-carnitine,in the retina.CONCLUSION:Eicosane has protective effects,antioxidant potential,and anti-inflammatory properties in an in vitro model of glutamate-induced cell damage and in an in vivo model of NMDA-induced RGC injury in mouse glaucoma through modulation of L-arginine and/or L-carnitine metabolism.

While the spatial distribution pattern of fish is increasingly used for toxicological test o chemicals or wastewater,no ideal parameter is available for quantitative assessment of spa tial distribution,especially uneven distribution with multiple hotspots.Here,to develop a quantitative assessment parameter for spatial distribution,the zebrafish were exposed to ethanol,pentylenetetrazole(PTZ),paraquat dichloride(paraquat)and wastewater,followed by a behavioral test in a narrow tank.Behavioral data was acquired and analyzed by id Tracker and MATLAB.By comparing the effects of all treatments on behavior parameters we confirmed that the spatial distribution was more easily altered rather than general loco motor parameters,e.g.0.7-70 mg/L PTZ and 5-20 mg/L paraquat being effective for altering spatial distribution but having little effects on general locomotor parameters.Based on the heatmap,i.e.,the cumulative proportion of grids and that of frequency in grids,we calcu lated the behavioral Gini coefficient(G_(b))for quantitative assessment of fish spatial distri bution.The Gini coefficient ranged from zero to 1,with larger values meaning poorer even ness of spatial distribution.Of note,G_(b)showed smaller coefficient of variations(CV)with3%-19%between replicate tanks in all treatments than the highest frequency(4%-79%),dis playing well robustness.Especially,G_(b)addressed the challenge of the complicated heatmap with multiple hotspots.Overall,the behavioral Gini coefficient we established is an idea parameter to quantitatively assess spatial distribution of fish shoal,which is expected to be applied in toxicity testing for chemicals and wastewater and automatic quality monitoring for surface water and aquaculture water.
