This study is the first of a series of a project on the development and implementation of environmental protection policies, before, during and after the construction of the Kribi Industrial and Urban Port Complex (KIPC). The results will equip the State and scientific structures concerned with the protection of people, water resources and the environment as a whole. This includes reference data on the state of marine pollution in the region dating from the end of realization of the first phase of KIPC known as Kribi Deep-Water Harbor (KDWH). Accordingly, the aim of this work is to assess the current state of KIPC and its surrounding by quantifying the preliminary parameters of suspended matter (SM);to analyze the physical and chemical parameters, chemical pollution indicators for anions and major cations and organic pollution indicators of four water samples taken from four different sites in the project area by filtration and weighing, pH meter, turbid meter, titration, colorimetry and titrimetric methods. Land use impact on clay dispersion/flocculation in irrigated and flooded vertisols from Northern Cameroon

Clay dispersion by water is important for soil and water conservation as well as for irrigation scheduling. In the present study, clay dispersion/flocculation of irrigated and flooded vertisols in North Cameroon was investigated using clay dispersion/stability indices. Nine vertisols topsoils (0–20 cm) samples were collected on different land use and their clay dispersion indices were assessed. Vertisols were acidic to slightly basic, with smectites as dominant clay mineral. The water dispersible clay (160–340 g kg-1), the dispersion ratio (0.55–0.79) and the clay dispersion ratio (0.48–0.83) were high in the studied vertisols while the clay flocculation index (0.17–0.54) and the clay aggregation (70–230 g kg-1) were low to moderate, indicating their high dispersion. Cropped vertisols displayed the higher amount of water dispersible clay while not cropped recorded the smaller amount. Concerning the cropped soils, irrigated vertisols displayed the highest clay dispersion indices suggesting that agricultural practices (irrigation) enhance clay dispersion. Globally, the clay dispersibility trend was: irrigated paddy ? rainy sorghum ? rainfed paddy ? dry-season sorghum ? not cropped. Statistical analyses revealed that amorphous Al, Na+ and electrical conductivity enhance clay dispersion while organic matter, nitrogen and Ca++ promote clay flocculation/aggregation. The overall findings emphasized that practices such as heavy tillage and irrigation induce clay dispersion. Minimum tillage, electrolytes concentration monitoring in irrigation water, irrigation scheduling based on soil moisture control, organic matter inputs and implementation of adapted dams are measures susceptible to limit their degradation through clay dispersion.

Chemokine system polymorphisms, survival and hepatocellular carcinoma occurrence in patients with hepatitis C virus-related cirrhosis

AIM： To explore the influence of polymorphisms in genes encoding for the chemokines Stromal cell-Derived Factor-1 （SDF-1）/CXCL12 and Monocyte Chemotactic Protein-1 （MCP-1）/CCL2, or for the chemokine receptor CCR5 on the risks of liver-related death and hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC） occurrence in hepatitis C virus （HCV）-infected patients. METHODS： SDF-1 3＇A, MCP-1 （-2518） and CCRS-△32 polymorphisms, SDF-1α, Regulated upon Activation Normal T cells Expressed and Secreted （RANTES）/CCL5 and MCP-1 serum levels were determined in 120 HCV- infected patients, included at time of cirrhosis diagnosis and prospectively followed-up. RESULTS： During follow-up, 23/120 （19.1%） patients died and 47/120 （39.1%） developed HCC. Carriers and noncarriers of each genetic marker had similar baseline characteristics estimating the severity of liver disease. The occurrence of death or HCC during follow-up was similar among carriers and noncarriers of each polymorphism. There was no association between the carriage of mutated alleles and chemokine serum levels and the latter were not associated with the risks of death or HCC. CONCLUSION： This study suggests the lack of association of SDF-1 3＇A, MCP-1 （-2518）, CCRS-△32 polymorphisms with death and HCC occurrence in cirrhotic HCV-infected patients.

Recently,multivalent aqueous calcium-ion batteries(CIBs)have attracted considerable attention as a possible alternative to Li-ion ***,traditional Ca-ion storage materials show either limited rate capabilities and poor cycle life or insufficient specific ***,we tackle these limitations by exploring materials having a large interlayer distance to achieve decent specific capacities and one-dimensional architecture with adequate Ca-ion passages that enable rapid reversible(de)intercalation *** this work,we report the high-yield,rapid,and low-cost synthesis of 1D metal oxides MV_(3)O_(8)(M=Li,K),CaV_(2)O_(6),and CaV_(6)O_(16)·7H_(2)O(CVO)via a molten salt ***,using 1D CVO as electrode materials,we show high capacity 205 mA h g^(-1),long cycle life(>97%capacity retention after 200 cycles at 3.0 C),and high-rate performance(117 mA h g^(-1) at 12 C)for Ca-ion(de)*** work represents a step forward for the development of the molten salt method to synthesize nanomaterials and to help pave the way for the future growth of Ca-ion batteries.

Flow fields and particle trajectories beneath a tidal bore:A numerical study

Tidal bores may appear in some estuaries when the tides quickly reach a high level. This phenomenon is rare but has a strong impact during its short duration: i.e. the river bed is significantly eroded and sediments are then transported. In this paper, the trajectories of suspended particles induced by this flow are numerically studied. Four undular bores with Froude numbers between 1.1 and 1.2 are *** similar Froude numbers, various initial flow conditions were selected to produce or not an inversion of the flow direction during the bore passage. The particle trajectories associated with each distinct flow configuration are presented and analyzed. These trajectories, estimated by solving the Maxey-Riley equation, appear to be very different even though the Froude numbers of flows are *** observations are important because the Froude number is often used to characterize a tidal bore as it describes well the free surface, however, it cannot describe the sediment transport. Finally, Chen’s model of wave-current interactions is adapted to fit the cases studied and is applied to the four bores simulated. The results highlight that this latter model can reproduce the observed trajectories and dissociate their different components. From this model, it is shown that the inertial and Basset history effects can be neglected compared to the gravity and flow entrainment effects due to the viscous drag when one wants to determine the long-term trajectories of suspended particles.

Diesel engine exhaust exposures in two underground mines

Exposure to diesel engine exhaust(DE) is a major concern in underground mines. It has been linked to cardiopulmonary diseases and is classified as a human carcinogen. The goal of this study is to assess DE exposures in workers at two underground gold mines, to compare exposure levels within and between the mines, and to compare different methods of measuring DE exposures, namely respirable combustible dust(RCD), elemental carbon(EC) and total carbon(TC). Ambient and personal breathing zone(PBZ) measurements were taken. Side-by-side monitoring of RCD and of the respirable fraction of EC and TC(EC_Rand TC_R) was carried out in the workers' breathing zone during full-shift *** ambient measurements, in addition to EC_R, TC_Rand RCD, a submicron aerosol fraction(less than 1 mm) of EC and TC was also sampled(EC_1and TC_1). Average ambient results of 240 mg/m^3 in RCD, 150 mg/m^3 in EC_Rand 210 mg/m^3 in TC_Rare obtained. Average PBZ results of 190 mg/m^3 in RCD,84 mg/m^3 in EC3Rand 150 mg/min TC_Rare obtained. Very good correlation is found between EC_Rand EC_1 with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.99(p < 0.01) calculated between the two logtransformed concentrations. No differences are reported between EC_Rand EC_1, nor between TC_Rand TC_1, since ratios are equal to 1.04, close to 1, in both cases. Highest exposures are reported for loadhaul-dump(LHD) and jumbo drill operators and conventional miners. Significant exposure differences are reported between mines for truck and LHD operators(p < 0.01). The average TC_R/EC_Rratio is 1.6 for PBZ results, and 1.3 for ambient results. The variability observed in the TC_R/EC_Rratio shows that interferences from non-diesel related organic carbon can skew the interpretation of results when relying only on TC data.

Background:Interventional trials in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS)sufer from the heterogeneity of the disease as it considerably reduces statistical *** asked if blood neuroflament light chains(NfL)could be used to antici‑pate disease progression and increase trial ***:In 125 patients with ALS from three independent prospective studies-one observational study and two interventional trials-we developed and externally validated a multivariate linear model for predicting disease pro‑gression,measured by the monthly decrease of the ALS Functional Rating Scale Revised(ALSFRS-R)*** trained the prediction model in the observational study and tested the predictive value of the following parameters assessed at diagnosis:NfL levels,sex,age,site of onset,body mass index,disease duration,ALSFRS-R score,and monthly ALSFRS-R score decrease since disease *** then applied the resulting model in the other two study cohorts to assess the actual utility for interventional *** analyzed the impact on trial power in mixed-efects models and compared the performance of the NfL model with two currently used predictive approaches,which anticipate disease progression using the ALSFRS-R decrease during a three-month observational period(lead-in)or since disease onset(ΔFRS).Results:Among the parameters provided,the NfL levels(P<0.001)and the interaction with site of onset(P<0.01)contributed signifcantly to the prediction,forming a robust NfL prediction model(R=0.67).Model application in the trial cohorts confrmed its applicability and revealed superiority over lead-in andΔFRS-based *** NfL model improved statistical power by 61%and 22%(95%confdence intervals:54%-66%,7%-29%).Conclusion:The use of the NfL-based prediction model to compensate for clinical heterogeneity in ALS could signif‑cantly increase the trial ***00868166,registered March23,2009;NCT02306590,registered December 2,2014.

Second-line therapy for gemcitabine-pretreated advanced or metastatic pancreatic cancer

AIM： To investigate second-line chemotherapy in gemcitabine-pretreated patients with advanced or metastat- ic pancreatic cancer [（frequency, response, outcome, course of carbohydrate antigen 19-9 （CA 19-9）].METHODS： This retrospective study included all patients with advanced or metastatic pancreatic cancer （adenocarcinoma or carcinoma） treated with secondline chemotherapy in our center between 2000 and 2008. All patients received first-line chemotherapy with gemcitabine, and prior surgery or radiotherapy was permitted. We analyzed each chemotherapy protocol for second-line treatment, the number of cycles and the type of combination used. The primary endpoint was overall survival. Secondary endpoints included progression-free survival, response rate, grade 3-4 toxicity, dosage modifications and CA 19-9 course.a second-line therapy among 206 patients who had initially received first-line treatment with a gemcitabi- ne-based regimen. Median number of cycles was 4 （range： 1-12） and the median duration of treatment was 2.6 mo （range： 0.3-7.4）. The overall disease control rate was 40.0%. The median overall survival and progression-free survival from the start of second-line therapy were 5.8 （95% CI： 4.1-6.6） and 3.4 mo （95% CI： 2.4-4.2）, respectively. Toxicity was generally acceptable. Median overall survival of patients with a CA 19-9 level declining by more than 20% was 10.3 mo （95% CI： 4.5-11.6） vs 5.2 mo （95% CI： 4.0-6.4） for others （P = 0.008）.CONCLUSION： A large proportion of patients could benefit from second-line therapy, and CA 19-9 allows efficient treatment monitoring both in first and secondline chemotherapy.
