Coronavirus Disease 2019(COVID-19)has significantly affected different physiological systems,with a potentially profound effect on athletic ***,to date,such an effect has been neither addressed nor ***,the aim of this study was to investigate fitness indicators,along with the respiratory and metabolic profile,in post-COVID-19 *** male soccer players,were divided into two groups:non-hospitalized COVID-19(n=20,Age:[25.2±4.1]years,Body Surface Area[BSA]:[1.9±0.2]m^(2),body fat:11.8%±3.4%)versus[vs]healthy(n=20,Age:[25.1±4.4]years,BSA:[2.0±0.3]m^(2),body fat:10.8%±4.5%).For each athlete,prior to cardiopulmonary exercise testing(CPET),body composition,spirometry,and lactate blood levels,were *** between groups were assessed with the independent samples t-test(p<0.05).Several differences were detected between the two groups:ventilation(:Resting:[14.7±3.1]L·min^(−1)vs.[11.5±2.6]L·min^(−1),p=0.001;Maximal Effort:[137.1±15.5]L·min^(−1)vs.[109.1±18.4]L·min^(−1),p<0.001),ratio VE/maximal voluntary ventilation(Resting:7.9%±1.8%vs.5.7%±1.7%,p<0.001;Maximal Effort:73.7%±10.8%vs.63.1%±9.0%,p=0.002),ratioVE/BSA(Resting:7.9%±2.0%vs.5.9%±1.4%,p=0.001;Maximal Effort:73.7%±11.1%vs.66.2%±9.2%,p=0.026),heart rate(Maximal Effort:[191.6±7.8]bpm vs.[196.6±8.6]bpm,p=0.041),and lactate acid(Resting:[1.8±0.8]mmol·L^(−1)vs.[0.9±0.1]mmol·L^(−1),p<0.001;Maximal Effort:[11.0±1.6]mmol·L^(−1)vs.[9.8±1.2]mmol·L^(−1),p=0.009),during *** significant differences were identified regarding maximal oxygen uptake([55.7±4.4]ml·min^(−1)·kg−1 vs.[55.4±4.6]ml·min^(−1)·kg−1,p=0.831).Our findings demonstrate a pattern of compromised respiratory function in post-COVID-19 athletes characterized by increased respiratory work at both rest and maximum effort as well as hyperventilation during exercise,which may explain the reported increased metabolic needs.

Background Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction,and septic cardiomyopathy(SCM)may complicate the course of the *** with multidrug-resistant(MDR)pathogens has been linked with worse *** study aims to evaluate SCM in patients with infections caused by different antimicrobial-resistant *** This retrospective study included patients with sepsis/septic shock,hospitalized,and intubated in the intensive care unit of the University Hospital of Larissa between January 2022 and September 2023 with echocardiographic data during the first two days after infection *** patients were divided into two groups:non-MDR-SCM group and MDR-SCM *** cardiac function was compared between the two *** A total of 62 patients were included in the ***-four patients comprised the MDR-SCM and 18 the non-MDR-SCM ***-six patients(41.9%)presented with left ventricular(LV)systolic dysfunction,and≤35%right ventricular fractional area change(RVFAC)was present in 56.4%.LV systolic function was more severely impaired in the non-MDR-SCM group(left ventricular ejection fraction,35.8%±4.9%vs.45.6%±2.4%,P=0.049;LV outflow tract velocity time integral,[10.1±1.4]cm vs.[15.3±0.74]cm,P=0.001;LV-Strain,–9.02%±0.9%vs.–14.02%±0.7%,P=0.001).The MDR-SCM group presented with more severe right ventricular(RV)dilatation(right ventricular end-diastolic area/left ventricular end-diastolic area,0.81±0.03 vs.0.7±0.05,P=0.042)and worse RV systolic function(RVFAC,32.3%±1.9%vs.39.6%±2.7%,P=0.035;tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion,[15.9±0.9]mm vs.[18.1±0.9]mm,P=0.165;systolic tissue Doppler velocity measured at the lateral tricuspid annulus,[9.9±0.5]cm/s vs.[13.1±0.8]cm/s,P=0.002;RV-strain,–11.1%±0.7%vs.–15.1%±0.9%,P=0.002).Conclusion SCM related to MDR infection presents with RV systolic dysfunction predominance,while non-MDR-SCM is mainly depicted with LV systolic dysfunction impairment.

Impact of hepatitis B immunoglobulin mode of administration on treatment experiences of patients after liver transplantation: Results from an online survey

BACKGROUND Hepatitis B immunoglobulin(HBIG)in combination with a potent nucleos(t)ide analog is considered the standard of care for prophylaxis against hepatitis B virus(HBV)reinfection after liver transplantation for HBV-associated *** To evaluate patients’satisfaction,preferences,and requirements for subcutaneous(SC),intramuscular(IM),and intravenous(IV)HBIG *** A self-completion,cross-sectional,online,22-question survey was conducted to examine perceptions and satisfaction with current HBIG treatment in adults receiving HBIG treatment following liver transplantation for HBV-associated disease in France,Italy,and *** HBIG products with different administration modes were evaluated using target product profile assessment and a conjoint(trade-off)*** Ninety patients were enrolled;32%,17%,and 51%were SC,IM,and IV HBIG users,*** duration of treatment was 36.2 *** HBIG had the least negative impact on emotional well-being and social life and was perceived as the most convenient,easiest to administer,least painful,and had the highest self-rating of treatment *** IM HBIG users than SC or IV HBIG users reported that administration frequency was excessive(67%,28%,and 28%,respectively).In the target product profile assessment,76%of patients were likely to use hypothetical SC *** the conjoint exercise,administration route,frequency,and duration were key drivers of treatment *** Ease,frequency,duration,and side effects of HBIG treatment administration were key drivers of treatment preferences,and SC HBIG appeared advantageous over IM and IV HBIG for administration ease,convenience,and pain.A hypothetical SC HBIG product elicited a favorable *** demographics,personal preferences,and satisfaction with HBIG treatment modalities may influence long-term treatment compliance.

BACKGROUND Transplant recipients commonly harbor multidrug-resistant organisms(MDROs),as a result of frequent hospital admissions and increased exposure to antimi-crobials and invasive *** To investigate the impact of patient demographic and clinical characteristics on MDRO acquisition,as well as the impact of MDRO acquisition on intensive care unit(ICU)and hospital length of stay,and on ICU mortality and 1-year mortality post heart *** This retrospective cohort study analyzed 98 consecutive heart transplant patients over a ten-year period(2013-2022)in a single transplantation *** was collected regarding MDROs commonly encountered in critical *** Among the 98 transplanted patients(70%male),about a third(32%)acquired or already harbored MDROs upon transplantation(MDRO group),while two thirds did not(MDRO-free group).The prevalent MDROs were Acinetobacter baumannii(14%),Pseudomonas aeruginosa(12%)and Klebsiella pneumoniae(11%).Compared to MDRO-free patients,the MDRO group was characterized by higher body mass index(P=0.002),higher rates of renal failure(P=0.017),primary graft dysfunction(10%vs 4.5%,P=0.001),surgical re-exploration(34%vs 14%,P=0.017),mechanical circulatory support(47%vs 26%P=0.037)and renal replacement therapy(28%vs 9%,P=0.014),as well as longer extracorporeal circulation time(median 210 vs 161 min,P=0.003).The median length of stay was longer in the MDRO group,namely ICU stay was 16 vs 9 d in the MDRO-free group(P=0.001),and hospital stay was 38 vs 28 d(P=0.006),while 1-year mortality was higher(28%vs 7.6%,log-rank-χ2:7.34).CONCLUSION Following heart transplantation,a predominance of Gram-negative MDROs was *** acquisition was associated with higher complication rates,prolonged ICU and total hospital stay,and higher post-transplantation mortality.

Basic wood density is an excellent indicator of quality,it is correlated with numerous physical,physiological and mechanical characteristics of a species and is a good descriptor of wood quality and important indicator of tree performance in community *** accurate method is thus needed to estimate wood *** standard way is to calculate the ratio of the oven-dried mass of a wood sample divided by its green volume,but wood characteristics within and between growth rings are highly variable;the density can vary in the longitudinal and the radial *** present study investigates the longitudinal and radial fl uctuations in the basic density of Abies cephalonica Loud and Pinus halepensis *** logs were cut from four diff erent trees for each species and 16 discs were formed(two discs from each log,one at the base and one at the top).Each disc was cut into cubes where their distance from the pith was measured and then sorted into 2 cm wide concentric *** results revealed a mild decreasing trend in basic density from the foot of the trunk upward for both *** pith in both species also seems to have a relatively high density,which in the immediate next growth rings decreases only to resume increasing toward the bark.

Provision of Ramp-rate Limitation as Ancillary Service from Distribution to Transmission System:Definitions and Methodologies for Control and Sizing of Central Battery Energy Storage System

The variability of the output power of distributed renewable energy sources(DRESs)that originate from the fastchanging climatic conditions can negatively affect the grid ***,grid operators have incorporated ramp-rate limitations(RRLs)for the injected DRES power in the grid *** the DRES penetration levels increase,the mitigation of high-power ramps is no longer considered as a system support function but rather an ancillary service(AS).Energy storage systems(ESSs)coordinated by RR control algorithms are often applied to mitigate these power ***,no unified definition of active power ramps,which is essential to treat the RRL as AS,currently *** paper assesses the various definitions for ramp-rate RR and proposes RRL method control for a central battery ESS(BESS)in distribution systems(DSs).The ultimate objective is to restrain high-power ramps at the distribution transformer level so that RRL can be traded as AS to the upstream transmission system(TS).The proposed control is based on the direct control of theΔP/Δt,which means that the control parameters are directly correlated with the RR requirements included in the grid *** addition,a novel method for restoring the state of charge(So C)within a specific range following a high ramp-up/down event is ***,a parametric method for estimating the sizing of central BESSs(BESS sizing for short)is *** BESS sizing is determined by considering the RR requirements,the DRES units,and the load mix of the examined *** BESS sizing is directly related to the constant RR achieved using the proposed ***,the proposed methodologies are validated through simulations in MATLAB/Simulink and laboratory tests in a commercially available BESS.

In this study,Ni catalysts supported on Pr-doped Ce O_(2) are studied for the CO_(2) methanation reaction and the effect of Pr doping on the physicochemical properties and the catalytic performance is thoroughly *** is shown,that Pr^(3+)ions can substitute Ce^(4+)ones in the support lattice,thereby introducing a high population of oxygen vacancies,which act as active sites for CO_(2) *** doping can also act to reduce the crystallite size of metallic Ni,thus promoting the active metal *** performance evaluation evidences the promoting effect of low Pr loadings(5 at%and 10 at%)towards a higher catalytic activity and lower CO_(2) activation *** the other hand,higher Pr contents negate the positive effects on the catalytic activity by decreasing the oxygen vacancy population,thereby creating a volcano-type trend towards an optimum amount of aliovalent substitution.

Arsenic speciation in fish from Greek coastal areas

Arsenic speciation analysis was conducted on fish samples （sardine and anchovy） collected from six areas along the Greek coastline, i.e. Artemisium Straits, Thermaikos Gulf, Amvrakikos Gulf, Strymonian Gulf, Thracian Sea, and Elefsina Gulf. Total arsenic levels ranging from 11.8 to 62.6 mg As/kg dry weight were determined. Arsenobetaine, a non-toxic form of arsenic, was found to be the main arsenic species, present at 8.6 to 58.8 mg As/kg dry weight, accounting for 67--95% of the total arsenic. Also detected in all fish samples was dimethylarsinic acid, although at considerably lower concentrations, ranging from 0.072-3.956 mg As/kg dry weight. Monomethylarsonic acid was detected at low levels in all anchovy samples, and only in sardines from one area. Finally, inorganic arsenic in the form of arsenate was detected only in fish at one area, indicating the possible effect of an environmental parameter on its presence at detectable amounts. Statistical analysis revealed the environmental variables, such as salinity, total organic carbon and nitrogen, ammonium, phosphate, total phosphorus, dissolved oxygen and pressure index, are potentially correlated to As species concentrations. Furthermore, based on factor analysis, the biological parameters, such as fish weight, lipids, protein and ash content, that are correlated to As species concentrations of fish were also identified. The interrelationship of arsenobetaine and dimethylarsinic acid concentrations within each fish species was evaluated.
