Appraisal of pollution and health risks associated with coal mine contaminated soil using multimodal statistical and Fuzzy-TOPSIS approaches

The present study assesses the concentration,probabilistic risk,source classification,and dietary risk arising from heavy metal(HMs)pollution in agricultural soils affected by coal mining in eastern part of India.Analyses of soil and rice plant indicated significantly elevated levels of HMs beyond the permissible limit in the contaminated zones(zone 1:PbSoil:108.24±72.97,CuSoil:57.26±23.91,CdSoil:8.44±2.76,CrSoil:180.05±46.90,NiSoil:70.79±25.06 mg/kg;PbGrain:0.96±0.8,CuGrain:8.6±5.1,CdGrain:0.65±0.42,CrGrain:4.78±1.89,NiGrain:11.74±4.38 mg/kg.zone 2:PbSoil:139.56±69.46,CuSoil:69.89±19.86,CdSoil:8.95±2.57,CrSoil:245.46±70.66,NiSoil:95.46±22.89 mg/kg;PbGrain:1.27±0.84,CuGrain:7.9±4.57,CdGrain:0.76±0.43,CrGrain:8.6±1.58,NiGrain:11.50±2.46 mg/kg)compared to the uncontaminated zone(zone 3).Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks were computed based on the HMs concentration in the soil and rice grain,with Pb,Cr,and Ni identified as posing a high risk to human health.Monte Carlo simulation,the solubility-free ion activity model(FIAM),and severity adjusted margin of exposure(SAMOE)were employed to predict health risk.FIAM hazard quotient(HQ)values for Ni,Cr,Cd,and Pb were>1,indicating a significant non-carcinogenic risk.SAMOE(risk thermometer)results for contaminated zones ranged from low to moderate risk(CrSAMOE:0.05,and NiSAMOE:0.03).Fuzzy-TOPSIS and variable importance plots(from random forest)showed that Ni and Cr were mostly responsible for the toxicity in the rice plant,respectively.A self-organizing map for source classification revealed common origin for the studied HMs with zone 2 exhibiting the highest contamination.The positive matrix factorization model for the source apportionment identified coal mining and transportation as the predominant sources of HMs.Spatial distribution analysis indicated higher contamination near mining sites as compared to distant sampling sites.Consequently,this study will aid environmental scientists and policymakers controlling HM pollution in agricultural soils near coal m

Impact of land cover change on land surface temperature: A case study of Spiti Valley

Land surface temperature(LST) is the skin temperature of the earth surface. LST depends on the amount of sunlight received by any geographical area. Apart from sun light, LST is also affected by the land cover, which leads to change in land surface temperature. Impact of land cover change(LCC) on LST has been assessed using Landsat TM5, Landsat 8 TIRS/OLI and Digital Elevation Model(ASTER) for Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh, India. In the present study, Spiti valley was divided into three altitudinal zones to check the pattern of changing land cover along different altitudes and LST was calculated for all the four land cover categories extracted from remote sensing data for the years of 1990 and 2015. Matrix table was used as a technique to evaluate the land cover change between two different years. Matrix table shows that as a whole, about 2,151,647 ha(30%) area of Spiti valley experienced change in land cover in the last 25 years. The result also shows vegetation and water bodies increased by 107,560.2 ha(605.87%) and 45 ha(0.98%), respectively. Snow cover and barren land decreased by 19,016.5 ha(23.92%) and 88,589(14.14%), during the study period. A significant increase has been noticed in vegetation amongst all land cover types. Minimum, maximum and mean LST for three altitudinal zones have been calculated. The mean LST recorded was 11℃ in 1990 but it rose by 2℃ and reached to 13℃ in 2015. Changes in LST were obtained for each land cover categories. The mean temperature of different land cover types was calculated by averaging value of all pixels of a given land cover types. The mean LST of vegetation, barren land, snow cover and water body increased by 6℃, 9℃, 1℃, and 7℃, respectively. Further, relationships between LST, Normalized Difference Snow Index(NDSI), and Normalised Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI) were established using Linear Regression.

Object Matching Across Multiple Non-overlapping Fields of View Using Fuzzy Logic

An approach based on fuzzy logic for matching both articulated and non-articulated objects across multiple non-overlapping field of views (FoVs) from multiple cameras is proposed. We call it fuzzy logic matching algorithm (FLMA). The approach uses the information of object motion, shape and camera topology for matching objects across camera views. The motion and shape information of targets are obtained by tracking them using a combination of ConDensation and CAMShift tracking algorithms. The information of camera topology is obtained and used by calculating the projective transformation of each view with the common ground plane. The algorithm is suitable for tracking non-rigid objects with both linear and non-linear motion. We show videos of tracking objects across multiple cameras based on FLMA. From our experiments, the system is able to correctly match the targets across views with a high accuracy.

Spatial distribution of fossil fuel derived CO_(2) over India using radiocarbon measurements in crop plants

Examining the contribution of fossil fuel CO_(2) to the total CO_(2) changes in the atmosphere is of primary concern due to its alarming levels of fossil fuel emissions over the globe,specifically developing countries.Atmospheric radiocarbon represents an important observational constraint and utilized to trace fossil fuel derived CO_(2)(CO_(2ff))in the atmosphere.For the first time,we have presented a detailed analysis on the spatial distribution of fossil fuel derived CO_(2)(CO_(2ff))over India using radiocarbon(Δ14C)measurements during three-year period.Analysis shows that theΔ14C values are varying between 29.33‰ to-34.06‰ across India in the year 2017,where highest value belongs to a location from Gujarat while lowest value belongs to a location from Chhattisgarh.Based on the14C patterns,spatial distributions of CO_(2ff) mole fractions have been determined over India and the calculated values of CO_(2ff) mole fractions are varying between 4.85 ppm to 26.59 ppm across India.It is also noticed that the highest CO_(2ff) mole fraction is observed as 26.59 ppm from a site in Chhattisgarh.CO_(2ff) mole fraction values from four high altitude sites are found to be varied between 4.85 ppm to 14.87 ppm.Effect of sampling different crop plants from the same growing season and different crop plant organs(grains,leaves,stems)on theΔ14C and CO_(2ff) have been studied.Annual and intra seasonal variations in theΔ14C and CO_(2ff) mole fractions have also been analyzed from a rural location(Dholpur,Rajasthan).

Sustainable remediation of failed slope using helical soil nails

The performance of a helical soil nailed structure is dependent on the installation torque required and the consequent pullout resistance developed.The present research work aims at proposing theoretical models to estimate the required torque during installation of helical soil nails.Moreover,theoretical models are also developed to predict the pullout capacity of single and group of the helical nail for uniform and staggered arrangements.The proposed model predicts the pure-elastic and elastic-plastic pullout behavior of different helical nails.An equation for estimating the capacity-totorque Ratio(Kt)has also been developed for different nail shaft diameters.The results from the proposed models are validated with experimental results obtained from model testing of both single and group of helical nails.The predicted results are also compared for validation with the published literature.The results for installation torque and pullout load depict that the developed models predict values which are in accordance with the experimental results and are also found in good agreement with the published literature.Thus,the proposed models can effectively be used by the filed engineers for estimating the required installation torque and corresponding pullout capacities for single or double plate helical soil nails in cohesionless soil under surcharge pressure range of 0–50k Pa.

Trusted Cluster-Based Communication for Wireless Sensor Network Using Meta-Heuristic Algorithms

The mobile transient and sensor network’s routing algorithm detects available multi-hop paths between source and destination nodes.However,some methods are not as reliable or trustworthy as expected.Therefore,finding a reliable method is an important factor in improving communication security.For further enhancement of protected communication,we suggest a trust cluster based secure routing(TCSR)framework for wireless sensor network(WSN)using optimization algorithms.First,we introduce an efficient cluster formation using a modified tug of war optimization(MTWO)algorithm,which provides loadbalanced clusters for energy-efficient data transmission.Second,we illustrate the optimal head selection using multiple design constraints received signal strength,congestion rate,data loss rate,and throughput of the node.Those parameters are optimized by a butterfly optimal deep neural network(BO-DNN),which provides first-level security towards the selection of the best head node.Third,we utilize the lightweight signcryption to encrypt the data between two nodes during data transmission,which provides second-level security.The model provides an estimation of the trust level of each route to help a source node to select the most secure one.The nodes of the network improve reliability and security by maintaining the reliability component.Simulation results showed that the proposed scheme achieved 45.6%of delivery ratio.

Crocus sativus L.,a member of the Iridaceae family,commonly known as saffron has very much popular as both medicine and spice.Earlier saffron was used as one of the important constituents in opioid preparations for pain relief.Its uses in the treatment of mild-to-moderate depression are well documented.Depression can affect the quality of life of individuals by causing headaches,difficulty in thinking,and loss of interest.Many clinical trials have been conducted for evaluating the efficacy of saffron in depression cases.Almost fifty constituents of C.sativus L are well known.Few of the major constituents include crocin,picrocrocin,and safranal.In the present review,the main focus is on the antidepressant effects of saffron and its major constituents,in which it was found that saffron has substantial effects on depression and anxiety because of double-blind study the data can be trusted.

Due to their unique activation modes,small organic molecule catalysts(organocatalysts)have proved their potential in facilitating the remote functionalizations of unsaturated acceptors with extended conjugation.The organocatalytic 1,6-addition reaction involving the attack of nucleophiles on the δ-carbon of the α,β,γ,δ-unsaturated acceptors has emerged as an excellent strategy to create a stereocenter at the δ-site with high regio-and stereo-control.Organocatalysis has also opened the window for developing complex domino reactions involving the 1,6-addition step.Tremendous advancement has been accomplished in the organocatalytic asymmetric 1,6-addition and related domino reactions for the stereocontrolled synthesis of complex molecular structures bearing multiple stereocenters.This review article summarizes the significant advancement in stereoselective domino reactions involving 1,6-addition as a critical step.

Rapid economic development and human activities have severely affected ecosystem function.Analysis of the spatial distribution of areas of rapid urbanization is the basis for optimizing urban-ecological spatial design.This paper evaluated the spatial distribution of urbanization in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei(BTH)region,and then quantified the ecosystem services(ES)budget in the region based on an ES supply and demand matrix.The results showed that(1)urbanization patterns in the BTH region were relatively stable from 2000 to 2015,with clear patterns of low levels of urbanization in the northwest and high levels in the southeast;(2)areas with positive ES budget values were found throughout the region,except in built-up areas,with high ES supply areas concentrated in the northwest,and high ES demand areas in the southeast;(3)at both the county and prefecture-city levels,urbanization had negative,positive,and negative correlations with ES supply,demand,and budget,respectively;(4)the coupling coordination degree(CCD)increased,with high CCD values in the southeast.Based on these results,policy recommendations include strengthening rational land-use planning and ecosystem management,promoting the coordinated development of the economy and ecological function,and coordinating the provision of production-life-ecological functions.

DIC Based Strain and Damage Analysis of Large Scale Steel to Composite Adhesive Joints Subjected to Tension and Compression Loading

This paper reports an experimental study of the mechanical response to tensile and compressive force of large scale steel to composite joints adhesively bonded with a thin layer of vinylester resin.In one specimen,the length of the reinforcing fibres in contact with the steel substrate has been reduced by saw cutting at both ends of the joint.This damaged specimen and four intact specimens were subjected to quasi-static tensile testing;six specimens were used for compression testing.The strain distribution at the composite surface and at the steel to hardwood connection of the specimen was monitored by digital image correlation(DIC).DIC allowed identifying the onset of damage in the tensile tested joints near the interface of the composite layer and the steel-hardwood connection.Both tensile and compression tested specimens failed due to significant peel strain concentration at the composite near the connection of steel and hardwood.The average strength of a specimen tested in compression was about 66%higher than the average strength of a specimen tested in tension.The strain concentration zone in the damaged specimen was away from the introduced saw cuts.As a result the damaged and intact tensile specimens showed the same failure strength and stiffness.All specimens failed by adhesive failure between the composite-hardwood interface.
