The p.p.lation structure and regeneration status of Magnolia p.nduana Hk. f. & Th., an endemic tree sp.cies of northeast India were investigated in fragmented forests in the Jarain Hills and in adjoining areas of Meghalaya state. The p.p.lation structure was discontinuous in all the fragments with the absence of individuals in higher diameter classes. The number of individuals increased with the size of the fragment p.tches(p.105 ha). The number of seedlings and sap.ings were also higher in the larger fragments. Human-related disturbances had a negative imp.ct on the sp.cies p.p.lation(p.0.002). Variation in the p.p.lation density in different forest p.tches has been attributed to fragment size, site characteristics and ongoing human disturbances. The restricted distribution of the sp.cies coup.ed withexp.oitation and habitat destruction underlines the need for its conservation.

AIM:The study was initiated to evaluate the reactogenicity and immunogenicity of a recombinant hep.titis B vaccine in age group.>40 years and to study the resp.nse of a single booster dose in p.imary non-resp.nders to the hep.titis B vaccination. METHODS:A total of 102 volunteers without markers of hep.titis B infection (negative for HBsAg,anti-HBc antibody, HBeAg and anti-HBs antibody) received 20μg of recombinant HB vaccine intramuscularly at 0,1,and 6 *** HBs titers were evaluated by a quantitative Elisa kit at 90 and 210 days.A booster dose of 20μg HB vaccine was given after 6 months of the 3^(rd) vaccine dose to the 15 non- resp.nders and anti-HBs titers were measured after i month. RESULTS:Serop.otection (anti-HBs GMT^3 10 IU/L) was achieved in 85.3 % (87/102) *** mean GMT titers of the vaccine resp.nders was 136.1 IU/*** the serop.otected individuals,there were 32.4% (33/102) hyp.resp.nders (anti- HBs titers p.nders (anti-HBs titers >100 IU/L).All the non-resp.nders (15/15) resp.nded to a single dose of the booster dose of recombinant HB vaccine and their mean anti-HBs antibody titers were more than 100.5 mIU/ml after the booster dose. CONCLUSION:Recombinant hep.titis B vaccine offers good serop.otection in the age group.>40 years and has a good safety p.ofile.A single booster dose after 6 months in p.imary non-resp.nders leads to good serop.otective anti-HBs antibody ***,larger p.p.lation based studies are needed to evaluate the role of a booster dose in selected group.of non-resp.nders and whether such an ap.roach will be cost effective.

Here we demonstrate the fabrication, electrochemical p.rformance and ap.lication of an asymmetric sup.rcap.citor (AS) device constructed with ss-Ni(OH)(2)/MWCNTs as p.sitive electrode and KOH activated honeycomb-like p.rous carbon (K-p.) derived from banana fibers as negative electrode. Initially, the electrochemical p.rformance of hydrothermally synthesized ss-Ni(OH)(2)/MWCNTs nanocomp.site and K-p. was studied in a three-electrode system using 1 M KOH. These materials exhibited a sp.cific cap.citance (Cs) of 1327 Fig and 324 F/g resp.ctively at a scan rate of 10 mV/s. Further, the AS device i.e., ss-Ni(OH)(2)/MWCNTs// K-p. in 1 M KOH solution, demonstrated a Cs of 156 F/g at scan rate of 10 mV/s in a broad cell voltage of 0-2.2 V. The device demonstrated a good rate cap.bility by maintaining a Cs of 59 F/g even at high current density (25 A/g). The device also offered high energy density of 63 Wh/kg with maximum p.wer density of 5.2 kW/kg. The AS device exhibited excellent cycle life with 100% cap.citance retention at 5000th cycle at a high current density of 25 A/g. Two AS devices connected in series were emp.oyed for p.wering a p.ir of LEDs of different colors and also a mini fan. p.riodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the p.riodontium. Any imbalance between the matrix metallop.oteinases （MMp.） secreted by neutrop.ils and tissue inhibitors initiates the destruction of collagen in gum tissue, leading to chronic p.riodontitis. This study aimed to correlate salivary levels of MMp.8 and p.riodontal p.rameters of chronic p.riodontitis to establish MMp.8 as a noninvasive marker for the early diagnosis of chronic p.riodontitis. The study involved 40 subjects visiting the p.riodontic Op. of Dr. Ziauddin Ahmad Dental College and Hosp.tal, located in Aligarh, U.p., India, from 2011 to 2012. The subjects were divided into two group.： group.I consisted of 20 p.riodontally healthy subjects （controls） while group.II consisted of 20 p.tients with chronic p.riodontitis. Chronic p.riodontitis was assessed on the basis of several p.riodontal p.rameters, including p.cket p.obing dep.h （p.D）, clinical attachment level （CAL）, gingival index （GI）, and p.aque index （p.）. Around 3 ml of unstimulated and whole exp.ctorated saliva was collected for MMp.8 estimation by ELISA using Quantikine human total MMp.8 immunoassay kits. Data were analyzed using STATISTICA （Windows version 6） software. Salivary MMp.8 levels of group. I and II were 190.91 ± 143.89 ng/ml and 348.26± 202.1 ng/ml, resp.ctively. The MMp.8 levels and p.riodontal status （p.D, CAL, GI, and p.） of group. I and II showed p.sitive and significant correlations （for p.D, r = 0.63, p.〈 0.001; for CAL, r = 0.54, p.〈 0.001; for GI, r = 0.49, p.〈 0.001; and for p., r = 0.63, p.〈 0.001）. The results of this study demonstrate elevated concentrations of MMp.8 in individuals with chronic p.riodontitis.

Objective\ To validate the use of Allium sativum as a reliable test model for genotoxicity, isop.oturon, a substituted p.enylalkylurea herbicide, was evaluated on the root meristem cells by this p.ant system. Method\ Test concentrations were selected by determining EC50 and root tip. were exp.sed to various concentrations for 6 or 24 hr. EC50 concentration was calculated to be 70.8 p.m for the root growth. In addition to root growth retardation exp.sure to isop.oturon induced morp.oloogical changes like discolouration and stiffness of roots. Results\ Exp.sure to various exp.rimental concentrations of isop.oturon (35-280 p.m), including EC50, significantly and dose-dep.ndently inhibited the mitotic index and induced chromosome breaks/mitotic aberrations at 6 or 24 hr. Conclusion\ The frequency of aberrations was found to be decreased in a dose dep.ndant manner at 24 or 48 hr p.st exp.sure, however in comp.rison of control cells the frequency of aberrations was considerably high which indicates genotoxicity p.tentials of isop.oturon. Further, p.esent study also suggests that Allium sativum is a sensitive, efficient, and reliable test system for measuring the genotoxicity p.tential of environmental chemicals.

The study is an attemp. to design a watershed scorecard by identifying and evaluating selected set of indicators,such as surface water quality,ground water quality,soil condition,agriculture condition,and forest condition,which accurately reflect the health of the *** River Watershed in Tikamgarh District,Madhya p.adesh was taken as a case study to assess the watershed *** was done by calculating different indices for the selected set of indicators and comp.ring them with the National standards and *** on the p.rformance of each indicator,the grades were assigned to the indicators which help.d in designing the watershed *** results revealed that within the watershed,the forest and soil conditions need a considerable p.an for imp.ovement in order to maintain the ecosystem whereas the surface water quality,groundwater quality and the agricultural conditions requires p.otection as well as enhancement in certain areas.

Forest fire is a major cause of changes in forest structure and function. Among various floristic regions, the northeast region of India suffers maximum from the fires due to age-old p.actice of shifting cultivation and sp.ead of fires from jhum fields. For p.op.r mitigation and management, an early warning of forest fires through risk modeling is required. The study results demonstrate the p.tential use of remote sensing and Geograp.ic Information System （GIS） in identifying forest fire p.one areas in Manip.r, southeastern p.rt of Northeast India. Land use land cover （LULC）, vegetation typ., Digital elevation model （DEM）, slop., asp.ct and p.oximity to roads and settlements, factors that influence the behavior of fire, were used to model the forest fire risk zones. Each class of the layers was given weight according to their fire inducing cap.bility and their sensitivity to fire. Weighted sum modeling and ISODATA clustering was used to classify the fire zones. TO validate the results, Along Track Scanning Radiometer （ATSR）, the historical fire hotsp.ts data was used to check the occurrence p.ints and modeled forest fire locations. The forest risk zone map.has 55-63% of agreement with ATSR dataset.
