Background Vascular remodeling is an important pathologic process in vascular injury for various vascular disorders such as atherosclerosis, postangioplasty restenosis and transplant arteriopathy. Recently, pathologic change and the role of bone marrow derived cells were wildly studied in atherosclerosis and restenosis. But the manner of lesion formation in neointima and cell recruitment in vascular remodeling lesion in the present of hypercholesterolemia is not yet fully understood. Methods Double-transgenic mice knockout of LDL receptor gene （LDL-/-） and expressing ubiquitously green fluorescent protein （GFP） were obtained by cross-breeding LDL -/- mice with the GFP-expressing transgenic mice. LDL-/- mice （22-24 weeks of age） fed high fat diet containing 1.25% （w/w） cholesterol were subjected to 9Gy irradiation and received bone marrow （BM） cells from the double-transgenic mice. Four weeks later, a nonconstrictive cuff was placed around the right femoral artery. After another 2 weeks, both right and left femoral arteries were harvested and subjected to histochemical analysis. Apoptosis was analyzed in situ using TUNEL assay. Results Two weeks after cuff placement, atherosclerotic lesions developed in the intima consisting of a massive accumulation of foam cells. The tissue stained with anti-α smooth muscle actin （SMA） antibody, showed a number of SMA-positive cells in the intimal lesion area. They were also positive for GFP, indicating that BM-derived cells can differentiate to SMCs in the intima in cuff-induced vascular remodeling lesions. Numerous small vessels in the adventitia as well as the endothelial lining of the intima were positive both for CD31 and GFP. The intima and media showed a large number of TUNEL-positive signals after 2 weeks cuff injury, indicating the presence of apoptosis in vascular remodeling. Conclusions Atherosclerotic lesions in mice can be developed in the intima after 2 weeks of cuff-induced vascular injury under the hypercholes

Branched-chain amino acid treatment before transcatheter arterial chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM:To examine the significance of branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) treatment before transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).METHODS:This study included 99 patients who underwent TACE therapy for HCC at our hospital and were followed up without treatment for at least 6 mo between January 2004 and January *** were divided into 2 groups:those receiving BCAA granules (n=40) or regular diet (n=59,control).Data obtained were retrospectively analyzed (prior to TACE,and 1 wk,1,3,and 6 mo after TACE) in terms of nutritional condition and clinical laboratory parameters (serum albumin level and Child-Pugh score),both of which are determinants of hepatic functional ***:The BCAA group comprised 27 males and 13 females with a mean age of 69.9 ± 8.8 *** patients of the BCAA group were classified as follows:Child-Pugh A/B/C in 22/15/3 patients,and Stage Ⅱ/Ⅲ /ⅣA HCC in 12/23/5 patients,*** controlgroup comprised 32 males and 27 females with a mean age of 73.2 ± 10.1 *** the control group,9 patients had chronic hepatitis,Child-Pugh A/B/C in 39/10/1 patients,and StageⅠ/Ⅱ/Ⅲ/ⅣA HCC in 1/11/35/12 patients,***,both serum albumin level and Child-Pugh score improved significantly in the BCAA group as compared with the control 3 and 6 mo after TACE (P 3.5 g/dL;and (3) epirubicin dose.A similar trend indicating a significant improvement of all variables in the BCAA group was noted (P < 0.05).CONCLUSION:Treatment with BCAA granules in patients who have undergone TACE for HCC is considered useful to maintain their hepatic functional reserve.

A high angular resolution near-infrared image that shows the intensity of polarization for the GG Tau A binary system was obtained with the Subaru Telescope. The image shows a circumbinary disk scattering the light from the central binary. The azimuthal profile of the intensity of polarization for the circumbinary disk is roughly reproduced by a simple disk model with the Henyey-Greenstein phase function and the Rayleigh function, indicating there are small dust grains at the surface of the disk. Combined with a previous observation of the circumbinary disk, our image indicates that the gap structure in the circumbinary disk orbits counterclockwise, but material in the disk orbits clockwise. We propose that there is a shadow caused by material located between the central binary and the circumbinary disk. The separations and position angles of the stellar components of the binary in the past 20 yr are consistent with the binary orbit with a = 33.4 AU and e = 0.34.
