Os/Os ratios and osmium concentrations were analyzed in sedimentary reference materials JSd-3,JMS-1,and JMS-2,issued by the Geological Survey of Japan,using the isotope dilution method with negative thermal ionization mass spectrometry(ID-N-TIMS).The chemical procedures used in this study are based on Carius tube digestion combined with carbon tetrachloride extraction to separate *** obtained Os/Os ratios of JSd-3,JMS-1,and JMS-2 were 0.941- 1.149,0.3894-0.465,and 0.747-0.848,respectively,and their Os abundances were 27.07-39.32 ppt,80.8-106.6 ppt,and 281-317.2 ppt,*** among the samples presumably reflect differences in sources and depositional *** Os isotopic ratios and abundances were variable within individual *** relative 95%confidence intervals of Os concentrations and isotopic ratios were respectively 13%and 6.2%for JSd-3,15%and 9.8%for JMS-1,and 4.3%and 4.2%for *** variations probably reflect the heterogeneity of the original rock of each reference *** concentration and high isotope ratio of JSd-3 probably results from the derivation of the original rocks from continental components with low Os abundance and elevated Os/*** of anthropogenic Os were inferred in JMS-1,a nearshore sediment from an urbanized locality,which had high Os contents and relatively low Os isotopic *** elevated Os concentrations and high Os/Os in JMS-2,a pelagic clay,may reflect the scavenging of Os in seawater into Mn-Fe oxyhydroxides deposited on the seafloor.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been reported as potentially being useful biomarkers for various diseases including cancer, diabetes mellitus, heart disease, neurological disease and age-related diseases. In the present study, we aimed to determine whether the expression levels of circulating miRNAs in serum were changed with aging or sex. Serum samples from seven elderly males (69.86 ± 1.77 years old) and females (72.43 ± 1.49 years old), and six young males (26.17 ± 0.83 years old) and females (23.17 ± 1.52 years old) were obtained from the subject’s forearm at rest. The expression levels of circulating miR-146a and miR-20a in serum were determined by real-time TaqMan PCR. There were no differences in the expression levels of miR-146a between all groups. There was a significant interaction in this main effect where miR-20a levels were significantly lower in elderly male subjects when compared to young male subjects with no difference observed in young or elderly female subjects (p = 0.004 and p = 0.971, respectively). These results suggest that not all the miRNAs in the circulation are influenced by the effect of aging, but only some miRNAs may be selectively changed by the effect of aging.

There is an increasing understanding of the roles that microsatellite instability （MSI） plays in Lynch syndrome （by mutations） and sporadic （by mainly epigenetic changes） gastrointestinal （GI） and other cancers. Defi- cient DNA mismatch repair （MMR） results in the strong mutator phenotype known as MSI, which is the hall- mark of cancers arising within Lynch syndrome. MSI is characterized by length alterations within simple repeated sequences called microsatellites. Lynch syn- drome occurs primarily because of germline mutations in one of the MMR genes, mainly MLH1 or MSH2, less frequently MSH6, and rarely PMS2. MSI is also observed in about 15% of sporadic colorectal, gastric, and en-dometrial cancers and in lower frequencies in a minor- ity of other cancers where it is often associated with the hypermethylation of the IVlLH1 gene. miRNAs are small noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the posttranscriptional level and are critical in many biological processes and cellular pathways. There is accumulating evidence to support the notion that the interrelationship between MSI and miRNA plays a key role in the pathogenesis of GI cancer. As a possible new mechanism underlying MSI, overexpression of m/R-IEE has been shown to downregulate expression of MLH1, IVlSH2, and MSH6. Thus, a subset of MSI-positive （MSI＋） cancers without known MMR defects may result from m/R-1E5 overexpression. Target genes of frameshift mutation for MSI are involved in various cellular func- tions, such as DNA repair, cell signaling, and apoptosis. A novel class of target genes that included not only epi- genetic modifier genes, such as HDAC2, but also miRNA processing machinery genes, including TARBP2 and XPO5, were found to be mutated in MSI＋ GI cancers. Thus, a subset of MSI＋ colorectal cancers （CRCs） has been proposed to exhibit a mutated miRNA machinery phenotype. BACKGROUND The incidence of internal hernias has recently increased in concordance with the popularization of laparoscopic *** particular concern are internal hernias occurring in Petersen's space,a space that is surgically created after treatment for gastric cancer and *** hernias cause devastating sequelae,such as massive intestinal necrosis,fatal Roux limb necrosis,and superior mesenteric vein *** addition,protein-losing enteropathy(PLE)is a rare syndrome involving gastrointestinal protein loss,although its relationship with internal Petersen’s hernias remains *** SUMMARY A 75-year-old man with a history of laparotomy for early gastric cancer developed Petersen's hernia 1 year and 5 mo after *** was successfully treated by reducing the incarcerated small intestine and closure of Petersen’s defect without resection of the small *** 3 mo after his surgery for Petersen’s hernia,he developed bilateral leg edema and *** was diagnosed with PLE with an alpha-1 antitrypsin clearance of 733 mL/24 ***-balloon enteroscopy revealed extensive jejunal ulceration as the etiology,and it facilitated minimum bowel *** analysis showed extensive jejunal ulceration and collagen hyperplasia with nonspecific inflammation of all layers without lymphangiectasia,lymphoma,or vascular *** postoperative course was unremarkable,and his bilateral leg edema and hypoalbuminemia improved after 1 *** was no relapse over the 5-year follow-up *** PLE and extensive jejunal ulceration may occur after Petersen's *** enteroscopy helps identify and resect these lesions.
