AIM： To investigate the usefulness of sucrose permeability test using serum in the diagnosis of gastric diseases, with special reference to early gastric cancer （EGC）. METHODS： A total of 63 subjects, including 11 patients with gastric ulcer, 20 patients with gastric cancer （13, early; 7, advanced） and 32 healthy controls, were studied. Blood and urine samples were collected repeatedly for 5 h before and after the sucrose loading. Sucrose levels were measured by a newly developed RESULTS： Serum sucrose levels started to increase 15 min after loading, and peaked at 60 min in the gastric disease groups. The levels for gastric ulcer, EGC and advanced gastric cancer （AGC） at 60 min were significantly higher than that in the healthy controls （26.9±2.4, 34.4±5.0, and 71.8±15.6 vs 7.9±0.7 mol/L, respectively, P〈0.01）. The cut-off level set at 15.4 mol/L （60 min） offered the best distinction between EGC patients and healthy controls; and the sensitivity and specificity were 92.3% and 93.8%, respectively, while those of the urine method were 76.9% and 93.8%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS： The gastric permeability test using serum is reliable for the detection of EGC, and this test can provide results much earlier than the conventional urine method. This test may offer a useful alternative to more invasive tests for EGC.

To investigate whether single nucleotide polymorphisms in maf protein k (MAFk), which encodes the MAFk, lead to increased susceptibility to ulcerative colitis in the Japanese population. METHODSThis case control study examined the associations between MAFk single nucleotide polymorphisms (rs4268033 G>A, rs3735656 T>C and rs10226620 C>T) and ulcerative colitis susceptibility in 174 patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) cases, and 748 subjects without no lower abdominal symptoms, diarrhea or hematochezia (controls). In addition, as the second controls, we set 360 subjects, who have an irregular bowel movement without abnormal lower endoscopic findings (IBM controls). RESULTSThe genotype frequency of rs4268033 AA and allelic frequency of the rs4268033A allele were significantly higher in the UC cases than in both controls (P = 0.0005 and k genetic polymorphisms are significantly associated with susceptibility to UC development. In particular, rs4268033 is closely associated with an increased risk for the development of UC.

Gastric carcinoma is one of the malignancies that are most frequently associated with esophageal *** describe herein our device for advanced esophageal cancer associated with early gastric cancer in the antrum.A 57-year-old man presenting with dysphagia and upper abdominal pain was admitted to our *** examinations revealed locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the middle thoracic esophagus (T3N0M0 Stage ⅡA) and mucosal signetring cell carcinoma of the gastric antrum (T1N0M0 Stage ⅠA).Although the gastric tumor appeared to be an intramucosal carcinoma,its margin was obscure,so endoscopic en-bloc resection was considered *** chose surgical resection of the gastric tumor as well as the esophageal SCC after neoadjuvant chemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin for advanced esophageal *** transthoracic esophagectomy with three-field lymph node dissection,the gastric carcinoma was removed by gastric antrectomy,which preserved the right gastroepiploic vessels,and a pedunculated short gastric tube was used as the esophageal ***-eight months after the surgery,the patient is well with no evidence of cancer *** it minimizes surgical stress and organ sacrifice,gastric tube interposition is a potentially useful technique for esophageal cancer associated with localized early gastric cancer.

YMnO3 and the Fe doped samples were prepared and the lattice constants, electrical conductivities and Seebeck coefficients were measured. The solubility limit of Fe for Mn of YMnO3 was 25 atomic %, the electrical conductivity increased in the range of 350°C - 700°C as Fe increased up to 10%, and the doped samples showed larger Seebeck coefficient than undoped samples.

Soybean (Glycine max L.) plays an essential role in human nutrition as a protein source, and in plant nutrition as a N source. The rate of N fixation varies depending on the cultivars and compatibility between the inoculated Rhizobium strain and the host cultivar. Characterizing the nodulation regulatory (Rj) genes is necessary to determine the compatibility of cultivars and Rhizobium strains. Rj genes were previously identified based on inoculation tests and PCR analyses. The six cultivars Yezin-3, Yezin-7, Yezin-11, Shan Seine (Local), Madaya (Local), and Hinthada (Local) were identified as harboring the Rj4 gene. Two cultivars, Yezin-6 and Yezin-8, were classified as non-Rj-gene harboring. Two other cultivars, Yezin-9 and Yezin-10, were identified as Rj3- and Rj2Rj3-gene harboring, respectively. Ours is the first report on Rj3- and Rj2Rj3-gene harboring cultivars in Myanmar. We evaluated Myanmar soybean cultivars for symbiotic effectiveness, relying on the standard strain Bradyrhizobium japonicum USDA110. In our first experiment, the soybean cultivar Yezin-11 (Rj4) showed the highest N fixing potential. Based on their potential for fixing N and nodulation, the top six soybean cultivars were Yezin-11 (Rj4), Yezin-9 (Rj3), Yezin-6 (non-Rj), Yezin-8 (non-Rj), Yezin-3 (Rj4) and Yezin-10 (Rj2Rj3). These cultivars were selected for a second experiment, which revealed that the N fixation, nodulation, and plant growth of Yezin-11 (Rj4) *Corresponding author. A. Z. Htwe et al. 2800 were superior to the other cultivars. We conclude that Yezin-11 (Rj4) is the most efficient cultivar for nodulation and N fixation when inoculated with B. japonicum USDA110.

In the surgical treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma and colorectal liver metastasis, it is important to preserve sufficient liver volume after resection in order to avoid post-hepatectomy liver sufficiency and to increase the feasibility of repeated hepatectomyin case of intrahepatic recurrence. Parenchymasparing approach, which minimizes the extent of resection while obtaining sufficient surgical margins, has been developed in open hepatectomy. Although this approach can possibly have positive impacts on morbidity and mortality, it is not popular in laparoscopic approach because parenchyma-sparing resection is technically demanding especially by laparoscopy due to its intricate curved transection planes. "Small incision, big resection" is the words to caution laparoscopic surgeons against an easygoing trend to seek for a superficial minimal-invasiveness rather than substantial patient-benefits. Minimal parenchyma excision is often more important than minimal incision. Recently, several reports have shown that technical evolution and accumulation of experience allow surgeons to overcome the hurdle in laparoscopic parenchymasparing resection of difficult-to-access liver lesions in posterosuperior segments, paracaval portion, and central liver. Laparoscopic surgeons should now seek for the possibility of laparoscopic parenchyma-sparing hepatectomy as open approach can, which we believe is beneficial for patients rather than just a small incision and lead laparoscopic hepatectomy toward a truly minimally-invasive approach.

Geometry and electronic structures of gallium phthalocyanine dimer and fullerene molecules were investigated by theoretical calculation. The highest occupied molecular orbital was localized on the donor site, and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital were localized on accepter site. The present results indicate that high conversion efficiency would be expected when phthalocyanine dimers were used as solar cell materials.

An 80-year-old man was under annual surveillance esophagogastroduodenoscopy after endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD) for early gastric cancer(EGC).Two years after the initial ESD, a 0-Ⅱc type metachronous EGC lesion, 8 mm in size, without an ulcer scar, was found in the gastric *** estimated tumor depth was up to the mucosa, and biopsy revealed well and poorly differentiated *** was performed for this lesion and en bloc resection with negative margins was *** examination revealed an adenosquamous carcinoma 8 mm in size invading the deep submucosal layer(1600 μm), with lymphovascular invasion, consistent with the diagnosis of non-curative *** gastrectomy was recommended for this patient; however, two months after the ESD, preoperative computed tomography revealed multiple liver metastases, and the patient was considered as an unsuitable candidate for surgical *** chemotherapy was therefore started; however, the patient died of gastric cancer 27 mo after the second *** gastric adenosquamous carcinoma localized to the mucosa and submucosa is extremely rare and its clinical behavior is not well *** present report is very significant in that it underscores the distinct possibility of gastric adenosquamous carcinoma being very aggressive and fatal even when detected at an early cancer.
