In this study, a simple and effective technique for establishing an external mass transfer model in a recirculated packed-bed batch reactor (RPBBR) with an immobilized lipase enzyme and Jatropha oil system is presented. The external mass transfer effect can be represented with a model in the form of Colburn factor JD = k Re-(1–n). The value of k and n were derived from experimental data at different mass flow *** experiment shows an average increment of 1.51% FFA for calcium alginate and 1.62% FFA for carrageenan after the hydrolysis took place. Based on different biopolymer material used in immobilized beads, JD = 1.674 Re-0.4 for calcium alginate and JD = 1.881 Re-0.3 for k-carrageenan were found to be adequate to predict the experimental data for external mass transfer in the reactor in the Reynolds number range of 0.2 to 1.2. The purposed model can be used for the design of industrial bioreactor and scale up. Besides, the external mass transfer coefficients for the hydrolysis of Jatropha oil reaction and the entrapment efficiency for the two biopolymer materials used were also investigated.

Feature extraction of signals plays an important role in classification problems because of data dimension reduction property and potential improvement of a classification accuracy rate. Principal component analysis (PCA), wavelets transform or Fourier transform methods are often used for feature extraction. In this paper, we propose a multi-scale PCA, which combines discrete wavelet transform, and PCA for feature extraction of signals in both the spatial and temporal domains. Our study shows that the multi-scale PCA combined with the proposed new classification methods leads to high classification accuracy for the considered signals.

Background: Fractional flow reserve (FFR)-guided interventions, though proved to be safe, continue to be a much-underutilized modality in determining treatment strategy, and data is lacking in Indian population. Objective: We aimed to determine the use of FFR-guided PCI and assess the overall impact on treatment decisions and clinical outcomes in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) or chronic coronary syndromes (CCS). Methods: In this single-center retrospective and prospective observational study, FFR had been performed for the evaluation of treatment reclassification and clinical outcomes, as per physician’s clinical practice. Results: Data was obtained for 250 subjects (mean age 60.45 ± 9.6 years) with 324 lesions. The treatment plan based on angiography alone changed in 28% of lesions post-hyperemic FFR. The initial treatment plan based on angiography vs. the final treatment plan post-FFR (>0.80) was medical management 56.5% vs. 66.0%;CABG 11.1% vs. 7.7%;and PCI 32.4% vs. 26.2%. In subjects initially assigned to medical management, 14% had changed to PCI, and for subjects initially assigned to PCI, 44% had changed to medical therapy. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis revealed a good correlation between a resting FFR value of <0.87 and hyperemic FFR value of <0.80. T

The shoreline morphology change due to erosion and deposition is a major concern for coastal zone management. In the present study, a highly dynamic coast of Gahirmatha on Bay of Bengal? in northeast India is experiencing active erosion, which is mainly wave and tide erosion related hazard threat ending human habitation and sustainability of the coast. In our study, high resolution satellite imagery of time series provided detailed sequence of coastal morphology and their changes in all respects. Comparison study of relative shoreline positions on time series satellite data spanning?three decades from 1973 to 2004 covering for the years of 1973, 1983, 1987, 1990, 1998, 2000 and 2004, provided regional changes with accelerated erosion and accretion. The result of the studies?have revealed that the areas of severe erosion found along the coast are confined to the promontories of the present day mouths itself of the Baitrani at Dhamra and Brahmani at Maipura inlets. In this background, it is significant to understand the magnitude of factors that are responsible for prograding or retrograding of coast. The present study is an attempt in this direction.

Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) is an enzyme which has been shown to be involved in the patho-genesis, treatment and prognosis of Alzheimer’s disease. In its current form, however, evidence is equivocal with all of the associations. Variant forms of the protein exist, where the enzymatic function is lost to varying degrees. We performed in silico evaluation of these variants. Bioinformatics and molecular modeling, based on data from ESTHER database and Protein Data Bank (RCSB), were used for in silico predictions of the structures of the silent variants that involve a single amino acid change. Variants with loss of enzyme activity were evaluated for structural changes near the active site and the thermody-namic stability of the variants was estimated. The results indicated that the loss of activity of the variants can, in most cases, be attributed to structural changes in the active site or to lower thermodynamic stability. Our results showed that the loss of enzyme activity may be due to changes in the active site, oligomerization or loss of structural stability. Individuals with loss of function mutation of BChE can be studied and followed up for their proneness or resistance to cognitive decline with aging.

Land reclamation is gradually posing negative impact on man due to unplanned urbanization. A study was carried out on impact of land reclamation through sand mining of coastal communities in Ikate and Ilubirin in Lagos, Nigeria. Ten waters (8 surface and 2 groundwater sources), 10 soil samples and air were collected and taken for analysis. Results of water revealed concentrations lower than WHO (2017) and SON (2007) standards. Soil/sediment with average crustal value revealed Pb and Cd above standard values, which is attributed to anthropogenic influence on soils. Quality of air in the study was mainly particulate matter arising from the sea and reclaimed land in the surroundings of the environment with the highest Total Suspended Particulate of 0.8 mg/m3 in sulfur dioxide. This explains corrosion found on the roofs of the communities. Therefore, in the development planning adequate precautions should be put in place to avert environmental degradation.

This paper presents the knee-joint vibration signal processing and pathological localization procedures using the empirical mode decomposition for patients with chondrom alacia *** artifacts of baseline wander and random noise were identified in the decomposed monotonic trend and intrinsic mode functions (IMF) using the modeling method of probability density function and the confidence limit ***, the fluctuation parts in the signal were detected by the signal method turning for count. The results demonstrated that the quality of reconstructed signal can be greatly improved, with the removal of the baseline wander(adaptive trend) and the Gaussian distributed random noise. By detecting the turn signals in the artifact-free signal, the pathological segments related to chondrom alacia patellae can be effectively localized with the beginning and ending points of the span of turn signals.

Provision of quality drinking water is paramount for sustaining good public health in urban residents. Packaged water produced and consumed across cities in Nigeria lacks integrity in protecting Health. Water safety plan based on hazard identification and risk assessment in each component of the water production system is essential in providing quality water by packaged water producing companies in Nigeria. This study aims at developing water safety plan for selected packaged water manufacturing companies in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. Hazard identification and risk assessment were carried out based on site inspection studies, key informant interview, questionnaire survey and water sample analysis, and risk analysis using semi-quantitative risk matrix approach. The results revealed a total of 26 possible hazardous events which may compromise water quality such as on-site septic tanks and effluents discharged at source water and improper maintenance and hygiene practices within the system. Based on these, appropriate mitigation and monitoring plans were drawn for action. The research found that water safety plan is feasible for the packaged water systems, and therefore calls on the relevant stakeholders for urgent implementation towards ensuring clean drinking water and protecting public health as more and more people are opting for packaged waters due to uncertain public water safety.

Rapid LC-ESI-MS-MS Method for the Simultaneous Determination of Sitagliptin and Pioglitazone in Rat Plasma and Its Application to Pharmacokinetic Study

A liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) based method was developed for the simultaneous monitoring plasma levels of Sitagliptin (STG) and Pioglitazone (PIO) for applicability to pharmacokinetic studies. The method was based on HPLC separation on the reversed phase Phenomenex Synergy C18 column (30 mm length, 4.6 mm internal diameter, and 4.0 μm particle size) at a temperature of 40?C using a binary gradient mobile phase consisting of methanol and 2 mM ammonium acetate buffer pH adjusted to 4.5 with acetic acid, at a flow rate of 1 mL?min?1. Tolbutamide was used as an internal standard. Detection of analytes was achieved with LC-MS/MS system in Multiple Reaction Monitoring (MRM) mode. The method was validated over concentration range of 10.98 - 2091.77 ng?mL?1 for SIT and 8.25 - 1571.63 ng?mL?1 for PIO and lower limit of quantification was 10.98 ng?mL?1 and 8.25 ng?mL?1 for STG and PIO respectively. Recoveries from spiked controls were within acceptance criteria for all the analytes and internal standard at all QC levels. Within batch and between batch accuracy for STG was found within 96.9% - 100.3% and for PIO was found within 100.0% - 104.3%. Within batch and between batch precision for STG was less than 3.1% CV (coefficient of variation) and for PIO was less than 5.3% CV at all concentrations levels. This method was successfully applied to monitor pharmacokinetics profile of both STG and PIO on simultaneous oral administration to rats. This method can be applicable for pharmacokinetic drug-drug interaction studies.
