Background Ni-kshay Poshan Yojana (NPY) is a direct benefit transfer scheme of the Government of India introduced in 2018 to support the additional nutritional requirements of persons with TB (PwTB). Our recent nationwide evaluation of implementation and utilization of NPY using programmatic data of PwTB from nine randomly selected Indian states, reported a 70% coverage and high median delay in benefit credit. We undertook a qualitative study between January and July 2023, to understand the detailed implementation process of NPY and explore the enablers and barriers to effective implementation and utilization of the NPY *** We followed a grounded theory approach to inductively develop theoretical explanations for social phenomena through data generated from multiple sources. We conducted 36 in-depth interviews of national, district and field-level staff of the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) and NPY beneficiaries from 30 districts across nine states of India, selected using theoretical sampling. An analytical framework developed through inductive coding of a set of six interviews, guided the coding of the subsequent interviews. Categories and themes emerged through constant comparison and the data collection continued until theoretical *** Stakeholders perceived NPY as a beneficial initiative. Strong political commitment from the state administration, mainstreaming of NTEP work with the district public healthcare delivery system, availability of good geographic and internet connectivity and state-specific grievance redressal mechanisms and innovations were identified as enablers of implementation. Background Soil microbial communities affect above-ground plant diversity and community composition by influencing plant growth performance. Several studies have tested the effect of soil bacterial microbiome on growth performance of native and invasive plants, but the influence of specific bacterial isolates has not been ***, we investigated the effects of soil bacterial exclusion by soil sterilization and by inoculation of Streptomyces rhizobacterial isolates on the growth performance of native and invasive Prosopis *** Plant growth performance of invasive P. juliflora was significantly reduced when grown in sterilized soils,whereas native P. cineraria showed enhanced growth performance in the sterilized soils. When grown in the soil inoculated with the specific Streptomyces isolate from P. juliflora(PJ1), the growth performance of invasive P. juliflora was significantly enhanced while that of native P. cineraria seedlings was significantly reduced. However, inoculation of P. cineraria and P. juliflora seedlings with Streptomyces isolate from the rhizosphere of native P. cineraria(PC1) had no significant effect on the growth performances either of P. juliflora or P. *** Our study reveals that invasive P. juliflora experiences positive feedback from the non-native soil bacterial community, while the native P. cineraria experiences negative feedback from its soil bacterial community. Our results provide fresh experimental evidence for the enemy release hypothesis, and further our understanding of the contrasting growth-promoting effects of differentially recruited microbial species belonging to the same genus(Streptomyces)in the rhizospheres of alien invasive and native plants.

Influence of Accompanying Anions on Potassium Retention and Leaching in Potato Growing Alluvial Soils

A column study was carried out to assess the influence of accompanying anions on potassium (k) leaching at potato growing sites with different soil textures (sandy loam and clay loam) in northwestern India. Potassium was applied in the top 15 cm layer of soil column at 30 and 60 mg k kg-1 through different sources having different accompanying anions (Cl-, SO2-4 , NO-3 and H2PO2-4 ). Maximum k was retained in the top 0-15 cm layer with a sharp decrease in k content occurring in 15-30 cm layer of the soil column. The trend was similar for both levels of applied k as well as frequency of leaching and soil type. The decrease of k content in soil column after four leaching events was maximum in case of khanaura sandy loam, while only minor decrease was observed in Hundowal clay loam when k was applied at 60 mg k kg-1 , indicating higher potential of clay rich soil to adsorb k. In general, the k leaching in presence of the accompanying anions followed the order of SO2-4 ≤ H2PO2-4 k was retained when k was applied along with SO2-4 and H2PO2-4 anions, and the least was retained when accompanying anion was Cl-. The influence of anions was more pronounced in the light textured soil and at high amounts of k application. Higher levels of k application resulted in higher losses of k, especially in sandy loam soil as observed from the leachate concentration. Among the different k sources, the maximum amount of k leaching was noticed in the soil column amended with kCl. After four leachings, the maximum amount of k leached out was 6.40 mg L-1 in Hundowal clay loam and 9.29 mg L-1 in khanaura sandy loam at 60 mg k kg-1 of soil application through kCl. These concentrations were lower than the recommended guideline of the World Health Organisation (12.00 mg L-1 ).
