A procedure to assess the spatial variability in the importance of abiotic factors affecting distributions： the case of world freshwater fishes

Understanding the factors shaping species＇ distributions is a key longstanding topic in ecology with unresolved issues. The aims were to test whether the relative contribution of abiotic factors that set the geographical range of freshwater fish species may vary spatially and/or may depend on the geographical extent that is being considered. The relative contribution of factors, to discriminate between the conditions prevailing in the area where the species is present and those existing in the considered extent, was estimated with the instability index included in the R pack- age SPEDInstabR. We used 3 different extent sizes： 1） each river basin where the species is present （local）; 2） all river basins where the species is present （regional）; and 3） the whole Earth （global）. We used a data set of 16,543 freshwater fish species with a total of 845,764 geographical records, together with bioclimatic and topographic variables. Factors associated with tempera- ture and altitude show the highest relative contribution to explain the distribution of freshwater fishes at the smaller considered extent. Altitude and a mix of factors associated with temperature and precipitation were more important when using the regional extent. Factors associated with precipitation show the highest contribution when using the global extent. There was also spatial variability in the importance of factors, both between species and within species and from region to region. Factors associated with precipitation show a clear latitudinal trend of decreasing in importance toward the equator.

Aims Adaptive convergence in floral phenotype among plants sharing a pollinator guild has been acknowledged in the concept of pollination ***,many plants display traits associated with a given syndrome,but are visited by multiple *** situation may indicate the beginning of a pollinator shift or may result in a stable situation with adaptations to different *** Salvia stachydifolia,a previous study suggested that flower shape is optimized to maximize the contribution to pollination of bees and ***,we studied three additional aspects of its floral biology:sexual phases,nectar dynamics and breeding system,and examined their connection with pollinators’behaviour to explore the presence of adaptations to bee and/or hummingbird *** Using a greenhouse population,we applied five pollination treatments to characterize breeding *** determine sexual phases,we recorded flower opening,anther dehiscence,corolla fall and stigma ***,we characterized nectar volume and concentration dynamics along the ***,to determine pollinator assemblage and visitation patterns,we performed field observations and recorded pollinators’*** Findings Salvia stachydifolia was partially protandrous and self-compatible,but open-pollinated plants attained the highest reproductive success,suggesting that reproduction is mainly dependent on pollinator *** opifex bumblebees were the most frequent visitors,but Sappho sparganura hummingbirds dominated visits early in the morning and at *** was typical of bumblebee *** suggest that the bee–hummingbird mixed visitation constitutes an unstable evolutionary situation,making *** an ideal system to understand the ecological circumstances in which pollination shifts occur.

A new perspective on intervertebral disc calcification—from bench to bedside

Disc degeneration primarily contributes to chronic low back and neck ***,there is an urgent need to understand the spectrum of disc degeneration phenotypes such as fibrosis,ectopic calcification,herniation,or mixed *** these phenotypes,disc calcification is the least *** calcification,by definition,is the pathological mineralization of soft tissues,widely studied in the context of conditions that afflict vasculature,skin,and ***,disc calcification is associated with poor surgical outcomes and back pain refractory to conservative *** is frequently seen as a consequence of disc aging and progressive degeneration but exhibits unique molecular and morphological characteristics:hypertrophic chondrocyte-like cell differentiation;TNAP,ENPP1,and ANk upregulation;cell death;altered Pi and PPi homeostasis;and local *** studies in mouse models have provided a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying this *** is essential to recognize that the presentation and nature of mineralization differ between AF,NP,and EP ***,the combination of anatomic location,genetics,and environmental stressors,such as aging or trauma,govern the predisposition to ***,the systemic regulation of calcium and Pi metabolism is less important than the local activity of PPi modulated by the ANk-ENPP1 axis,along with disc cell death and differentiation *** there is limited understanding of this phenotype,understanding the molecular pathways governing local intervertebral disc calcification may lead to developing disease-modifying drugs and better clinical management of degeneration-related pathologies.

A novel simple procedure to consider seismic soil structure interaction effects in 2D models

A method is proposed to estimate the seismic soil-structure-interaction （SSI） effects for use in engineering practice. It is applicable to 2D structures subjected to vertically incident shear waves supported by homogenous half-spaces. The method is attractive since it keeps the simplicity of the spectral approach, overcomes some of the difficulties and inaccuracies of existing classical techniques and yet it considers a physically consistent excitation. This level of simplicity is achieved through a response spectra modification factor that can be applied to the free-field 5%-damped response spectra to yield design spectral ordinates that take into account the scattered motions introduced by the interaction effects. The modification factor is representative of the Transfer Function （TF） between the structural relative displacements and the free- field motion, which is described in terms of its maximum amplitude and associated frequency. Expressions to compute the modification factor by practicing engineers are proposed based upon a parametric study using 576 cases representative of actual structures. The method is tested in 10 cases spanning a wide range of common fundamental vibration periods.

De-schooling Well-being: Toward a Learning-Oriented Definition

Purpose:(1)Critique conventional schooling as detrimental to student well-being and learning.(2)Articulate an alternative that is more conducive to learning and well-being in classrooms,schools,and educational ***/Approach/Methods:I review the historical functions of compulsory schooling,the main critiques to conventional schooling developed over the past century,emerging knowledge on the neuroscience of learning and well-being,and cases of large-scale pedagogical transformation from the Global ***:I argue that conventional schooling is detrimental to well-being,that deep learning is a precursor of well-being,and that compulsory schooling is not designed to cultivate ***-being has to be de-schooled so that students thrive in schools:The grammar of schooling has to be replaced with the language of *** requires deep and widespread cultural change,and some movements of pedagogical renewal from the Global South offer important lessons on how to accomplish ***/Value:Expanding the scope of existing debates about student well-being by questioning the assumption that compulsory schooling is inherently good and pointing out that unless the default culture of schooling is replaced with cultures of robust learning,student well-being efforts will simply reproduce the very problems they seek to solve.

Robust Disturbance Rejection Based Control with Extended-state Resonant Observer for Sway Reduction in Uncertain Tower-cranes

In this paper, the problem of load transportation and robust mitigation of payload oscillations in uncertain tower-cranes is addressed. This problem is tackled through a control scheme based on the philosophy of active-disturbance-rejection. Here, a general disturbance model built with two dominant components: polynomial and harmonic, is stated. Then, a disturbance observer is formulated through state-vector augmentation of the tower-crane model. Thus, better performance of estimations for system states and disturbances is achieved. The control law is then formulated to actively reject the disturbances but also to accommodate the closed-loop system dynamics even under system uncertainty. The proposed control schema is validated via experimentation using a small-scale tower-crane,and compared with other relevant active disturbance rejection control(ADRC)-based techniques. The experimental results show that the proposed control scheme is robust under parametric uncertainty of the system, and provides improved attenuation of payload oscillations even under system uncertainty.

Structure, Thermal Behavior and Characterization of a New Hybrid Iron Fluoride FeF4（2,2′-bipyridine）（H2O）2

New crystal of FeF4（2,2′-bipyridine）（H2O）2 was prepared by hydrothermal synthesis. Crystalline structure determination is performed from single crystal X-ray diffraction data. The unit cell is monoclinic space group P21/n, with cell parameters a=0.9046（5） nm, b=0.7502（5） nm, c=1.9539（5） nm,β=93.307（5）°, V=1.3238（12） nm^3 and Z=4. The structure of FeF4（2,2＇-bipyridine）（H2O）2 is built up from FeF4N2 octahedra coordinated by two nitrogen atoms of the 2,2＇-bipyridine molecules, and four fluorine atoms as well as uncoordinated H2O molecules. Thermal analysis of the title compound showed that the decomposition introduced four steps. IR spectra confirmed the presence of 2,2＇-bipyridine molecules. The optical absorption was measured at the corresponding 2max using UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectrum.

Efcient autofocus method for sequential automatic capturing of high-magnification microscopic images

This letter presents an autofocus （AF） method to position a high-magnification microscope lens that automatically captures hundreds of images from a single moving slide. These images are taken by a mobile clinic unit in a rural location, and are later automatically processed and revised by a remote specialist. This process requires high focus precision to enable image processing techniques to achieve proper results. Low focusing times are also required for the system to be operative. We propose a novel method that combines two focus measures with an adapted searching scheme to cope with both constraints.
