Comparative Analysis of RNAi Suppression Activity of Proteins from Two Disparate Viruses

RNAi is an efficient surveillance machinery that plays a robust defensive role in shielding plant and animal hosts against viral infections. In counter-defense viruses encode suppressor proteins that have the ability to restrict the RNAi machinery to ensure successful systemic invasion. The B2 protein of insect Flock House Virus (FHV-B2) and AC2 protein of Mungbean Yellow Mosaic India Virus (MYMIV-AC2) are two well-characterized suppressors of RNAi, capable of reversing reporter gene silencing. In this study, we compared the strength of the two suppressors by assaying for the degree of RNAi reversion and the duration of sustaining the reversal in planta. The suppression activity was observed by assaying for GFP fluorescence at 3 dpi, 7 dpi and 14 dpi. The phenotypic observations were corroborated with small RNA Northern Blotting and semi-quantitative RT-PCR. The results indicate that suppressor strength of FHVB2 is comparable to MYMIV-AC2, although they are encoded by virus infecting host from two different eukaryotic kingdoms. This study will provide new insights to dissect the conservation in the RNAi pathways during the host-virus interactions.

Cyber attacks are continuing to hamper working of Internet services despite increase in the use of network security systems such as, firewalls and Intrusion protection systems (IPS). Recent Denial of Service (DoS) attack on Independence Day weekend, on July 4th, 2009 launched to debilitate the US and South korean governments’ websites is indicative of the fact that the security systems may not have been adequately deployed to counteract such attacks. IPS is a vital security device which is commonly used as a front line defense mechanism to defend against such DoS attacks. Before deploying a firewall or an IPS device for network protection, in many deployments, the performance of firewalls is seldom evaluated for their effectiveness. Many times, these IPS’s can become bottleneck to the network performance and they may not be effective in stopping DoS attacks. In this paper, we intend to drive the point that deploying IPS may not always be effective in stopping harmful effects of DoS attacks. It is important to evaluate the capability of IPS before they are deployed to protect a network or a server against DoS attacks. In this paper, we evaluate performance of a commercial grade IPS Cisco ASA-5510 IPS to measure its effectiveness in stopping a DoS attacks namely TCP-SYN, UDP Flood, Ping Flood and ICMP Land Attacks. This IPS comes with features to counteract and provide security against these attacks. Performance of the IPS is measured under these attacks protection and compared with its performance when these protection features were not available (i.e. disabled). It was found that the IPS was unable to provide satisfactory protection despite the availability of the protection features against these flooding attacks. It is important for the network managers to measure the actual capabilities of an IPS system before its deployment to protect critical information infrastructure.

Injectable hydrogels as an important class of biomaterials have gained much attention in tissue ***,their crosslinking degree is difficult to be controlled after being injected into *** we all know,the crosslinking degree strongly influences the physicochemical properties of ***,developing an injectable hydrogel with tunable crosslinking degree in vivo is important for tissue ***,we present a dual crosslinking strategy to prepare injectable hydrogels with step-by-step tunable crosslinking degree using Schiff base reaction and *** developed hyaluronic acid/poly(y-glutamic acid)(HA/y-PGA)hydrogels exhibit step-by-step tunable swelling behavior,enzymatic degradation behavior and mechanical *** performance tests show that the storage moduli of HA/y-PGA hydrogels are all less than 2000 Pa and the compressive moduli are in kilopascal,which have a good match with soft *** addition,NIH 3T3 cells encapsulated in HA/y-PGA hydrogel exhibit a high cell viability,indicating a good cytocompatibility of HA/y-PGA ***,the developed HA/y-PGA hydrogel as an injectable biomaterial has a good potential in soft tissue engineering.

Nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin＇s disease occurs in 5% of all cases of Hodgkin＇s disease. It occurs more commonly in male. Only 5% of all Hodgkin＇s lymphoma cases develop spinal cord compression and in only 0.2% cases, spinal cord compression occurs as the initial presentation. So our case is rare both in the form of the unique variety of Hodgkin＇s disease and also in the form of presentation.

Present work evaluated the possible impact of choline on metabolic enzymes of cultured fish species into a semi-intensive pond culture system,reared with Catla catla(catla),Labeo rohita(rahu),Clarias batracus(magur)and Anabas testudineus(climbing perch)for 90 days in two *** was added directly into the pond water periodically throughout the experimental *** water quality parameters of each experimental pond were monitored and were analyzed in 15 days interval throughout the experimental tenure in both the *** were compared with treatment as choline-fed and control as non-choline-fed conditions during breeding(June-Aug.)and dry(Nov.-Jan.)*** metabolic enzymes,viz.,LDH(Lactate dehydrogenase),MDH(Malate dehydrogenase),and G6PDH(Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase)activities in the muscle,liver,and AchE(Acetylcholine esterase)activity in the brain and muscle revealed maximum significantly(pk(Hexokinase)activity in the muscle and ***,the result of principal component analysis(PCA)depicted the positive as well as in some cases a negative correlation among the enzymatic activities both in dry and breeding ***,it can be inferred that choline enrichment in fishes can substantiate the well nutritionally balanced food-flesh for consumption under this farm culture and the choline behaved as a positive contaminant into the pond eco-system under the semi-intensive culture condition.

Evaluation of Microsoft Windows Servers 2008 &2003 against Cyber Attacks

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) is known to compromise availability of Information Systems today. Widely deployed Microsoft’s Windows 2003 & 2008 servers provide some built-in protection against common Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, such as TCP/SYN attack. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of built-in protection capabilities of Windows servers 2003 & 2008 against a special case of TCP/SYN based DDoS attack. Based on our measurements, it was found that the built-in security features which are available by default on Microsoft’s Windows servers were not sufficient in defending against the TCP/SYN attacks even at low intensity attack traffic. Under TCP/SYN attack traffic, the Microsoft 2003 server was found to crash due to processor resource exhaustion, whereas the 2008 server was found to crash due to its memory resource depletion even at low intensity attack traffic.

In this paper we employ artificial neural networks for predictive approximation of generalized functions having crucial applications in different areas of science including mechanical and chemical engineering, signal processing, information transfer, telecommunications, finance, etc. Results of numerical analysis are discussed. It is shown that the known Gibb’s phenomenon does not occur.

Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma of Middle Ear and Temporal Bone: A Rare Case Report

Introduction: Rhabdomyosarcoma accounts for up to 60% of childhood soft tissue sarcoma, occurring mostly in the head and neck region but rarely in the ear and temporal areas. Case Report: A 4-year-old boy came to our hospital due to a purulent discharge, bleeding from his left ear. Also seen mass in the left ear along with facial weakness and diplopia. After histopathologic evaluation, it was diagnosed as embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. Conclusion: Rhabdomyosarcoma should be kept in mind as a differential diagnosis in all children presenting with otitis media with mastoiditis. Biopsy should be considered who are not responding to medications and those worsening condition.
