Ocular trauma treated with pars plana vitrectomy: early outcome report

AIM： To evaluate demographic variables and visual outcomes, among patients with ocular injuries involving the posterior segment, managed with pars plana vitrectomy.· METHODS： The records of patients were studied retrospectively from March to September 2010, to determine the age, gender, place of occurrence of trauma, visual acuity, anatomical site, nature of injury,wound length, the presence of an afferent pupillary defect, and the timing of vitrectomy. The Ocular Trauma Score was measured. The minimum follow-up from presentation was 6mo.·RESULTS： Ninety patients（77 males, 13 females）, with a mean age of 32.7 ±15.8y were included over the 6-month period. The majority of cases occurred in the workplace（47 patients）, followed by home（14 patients）.The mean visual acuity（log MAR） of patients significantly improved from 2.36 ±0.72 preoperatively to 1.50 ±1.14 postoperatively. Twenty-three patients had preoperative vision better than 2.0 log MAR, the postoperative visual acuity was significantly better among these patients than patients with worse than 2.0 log MAR（P 〈0.001）. Visual improvement between groups with early vitrectomy（〉7d）and delayed vitrectomy（〉7d） was not significantly different（P =0.66）. Postoperative visual acuity was not significantly different between patients with injury in Zone I and II（P =0.64）, but patients with injury in Zone III had significantly poorer visual acuity（P =0.02）. Patients with relative afferent pupillary defect had significantly poorer postoperative visual acuity（P =0.02）. Preoperative visual acuity, the difference of preoperative and postoperative visual acuity, and postoperative visualacuity were significantly different between groups with different ocular trauma scores（P〈 0.001）.·CONCLUSION： Trauma is more likely to occur in men under 40 y of age and in the workplace. A randomized, two-way, crossover study was conducted in 12 fasting, healthy, algerian volunteers to compare the bioavailability of two brands of metformin hydrochloride 850 mg coated tablets. The present study aimed to appreciate the bioequivalence of the generic product and to evaluate the intra-subject variability of this active substance in the Algerian population. The test brand was compared to Glucophage （Merck Uk） as the reference product. The study was performed at the bioequivalence center of the national control laboratory for pharmaceuticals products from 03 to 04, 2011, in joint venture with specialized medical hospital center of E1 Hadi Flici, Algiers, Algeria. The drug was administered with 200 mL of water after a 10 h overnight fasting on two treatment days separated by one week washout period. After dosing, serial blood samples were collected for a period of 12 h. A reliable, simple, and robust liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectro-metric （LC-MS/MS） method has been developed and validated for estimation of metformin in human plasma using propranolol as internal standard. The analytes were extracted from plasma by using the protein precipitation extraction technique. The assay was found to be linear over the range of 50-3000 ng/mL with a lower limit of quantitation of 50 ng/mL. Various pharmacokinetic parameters including AUC0-t, AUC0-∞, Cmax, Tmax, and T1/2 were determined from plasma concentrations of both formulations and found to be in good agreement with reported values. The pharmacokinetical and statistical analysis was conducted with kinetica 4.4.1. AUC0-t, AUC0-∞ and Cmax were tested for bioequivalence after log-transformation of data. No significant difference was found based on ANOVA; 90% confidence interval （[91.62 %, 115.66%] for AUC0-t, [92.07 %, 115.53 %] for AUC0-∞; [94.58%, 119.58 %] for Cmax） of test/reference ratio for these parameters were found within bioequivalence acceptance range of 80-125%. The objective of this work is to study the effect of obesity on the intervertebral discs and provide system analysis of the spine between multiple configurations of people, and know the risks due to this eccentric load (Big Belly). The results show that in all three previous loadings (obese people), the distributions of stress and strain are high in both D1 and D10 intervertebral discs. This shows that the distance between the point of load application and the spine axis has an important role in solicitation increasing and therefore its deformation: as main conclusion is that the concentration of the mass of stomach fat is a risk factor that leads to pain problems, deformation and herniated disc.

Due to developments of information technology, most of companies and E-shops are looking for selling their products by the Web. These companies increasingly try to sell products and promote their selling strategies by personalization. In this paper, we try to design a Recommender System using association of complementary and similarity among goods and commodities and offer the best goods based on personal needs and interests. We will use ontology that can calculate the degree of complementary, the set of complementary products and the similarity, and then offer them to users. In this paper, we identify two algorithms, CSPAPT and CSPOPT. They have offered better results in comparison with the algorithm of rules;also they don’t have cool start and scalable problems in Recommender Systems.

The new coronavirus, officially responsible for COVID-19, has spread rapidly internationally despite multiple countermeasures to limit its transmission. Morocco recorded his first case of COVID-19 on March 02, 2020. The main data on the pandemic and its evolution come from the Moroccan Ministry of Health. This paper aims to describe the evolution of the pandemic in Morocco and to highlight the different measures taken to stem its progression between March 02 to April 07, 2020. The measures were taken very early since the declaration of the first case in Morocco on March 2, 2020. After 5 weeks of the epidemic, the number of confirmed cases in Morocco reached 1184 including 90 deaths and 93 recoveries. The evolution of the curve seems to be slowed down compared to neighboring countries like Spain. The wearing of a mandatory mask was implemented on April 7 by the Ministry of Health as an additional measure to flatten the curve and allow the health system to effectively cope with the pandemic. The impact of this measure could be assessed by analyzing the evolution of the curve in the coming weeks. Sharing these results can serve as an example to other countries, especially for low-income countries, in their fight against the COVID-19.

Comparative Performance of Fixed-Speed and Variable-Speed Wind Turbine Generator Systems

In the early development of the wind energy, the majority of the wind turbines have been operated at constant speed. Subsequently, the number of variable-speed wind turbines installed in wind farms has increased. In this paper, a comparative performance of fixed and variable speed wind generators with Pitch angle control has been presented. The first is based on a squirrel cage Induction Generator （IG） of 315 kW rated power, connected directly to the grid. The second incorporated a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator （PMSG） of 750 kW rated power. The performances of each studied wind generator are evaluated by simulation works and variable speed operation is highlighted as preferred mode of operation.

Optimization of the Water Distribution Networks with Differential Evolution (DE) and Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP)

Nowadays, due to increasing population and water shortage and competition for its consumption, especially in the agriculture, which is the largest consumer of water, proper and suitable utilization and optimal use of water resources is essential. One of the important parameters in agriculture field is water distribution network. In this research, differential evolution algorithm (DE) was used to optimize Ismail Abad water supply network. This network is pressurized network and includes 19 pipes and 18 nodes. Optimization of the network has been evaluated by developing an optimization model based on DE algorithm in MATLAB and the dynamic connection with EPANET software for network hydraulic calculation. The developing model was run for the scale factor (F), the crossover constant (Cr), initial population (N) and the number of generations (G) and was identified best adeptness for DE algorithm is 0.6, 0.5, 100 and 200 for F and Cr, N and G, respectively. The optimal solution was compared with the classical empirical method and results showed that implementation cost of the network by DE algorithm was 10.66% lower than the classical empirical method.

Cancer Stem Cells (CSC) have the ability to self-renew and are present in most tissues including breast, brain, lung, prostates, testis, ovary, esophagus, colon, and liver. Their origin is yet to be discovered, though a series of hypotheses have been proposed in this regard. CSCs play a role in not only the creation of cancer, but also in its evolution, metastasis, and recurrence. CSCs have an important role in cancer therapy and the resistance towards chemotherapeutic agents. This article reviews the characteristics of cancer stem cells in terms of origin, resistance towards chemotherapy, methods of isolation, and cancer therapy.

Background: Abdominal cocoon is a rare disease where small intestine is enclosed in a membrane and commonly presents with features of bowel obstruction. Case Reports: We present two cases: one 28 years old male presented with abdominal pain and was diagnosed as abdominal cocoon at laparotomy;and another 81 years old female, a case of sigmoid cancer, was diagnosed at laparotomy as abdominal cocoon. In both cases membrane enclosing small intestine was excised. Histopathology of membrane was reported as fibro-collagenous tissue. Discussion: Abdominal cocoon is a rare entity, and its etiology is poorly understood. In most of cases preoperative diagnosis is not made with certainty despite of advancement in imaging. So, most of cases are diagnosed at laparotomy. Excision of membrane is the definitive treatment of abdominal cocoon. Conclusion: A high index of suspicion is required for diagnosing abdominal cocoon.
