Effects of Phosphate-Solubilizing Bacteria, Rock Phosphate and Chemical Fertilizers on Maize-Wheat Cropping Cycle and Economics

A two-year field study was conducted to test the effects of two phosphate-solubilizing bacteria(PSB), Pantoea cypripedii(PSB-3)and Pseudomonas plecoglossicida(PSB-5), inoculated singly or together with rock phosphate(RP) fertilization on maize and wheat cropping cycle by comparing with chemical P fertilizer(diammonium phosphate, DAP), mainly in the crop yield, soil fertility and economic returns. Inoculation of PSB together with RP fertilization increased the crop growth in terms of shoot height, shoot and root dry biomass, grain yield and total P uptake in both maize and wheat crops compared to the other treatments. Soil fertility in the context of available P, enzyme activities and PSB population in both maize and wheat crops was significantly improved with PSB inoculation together with RP fertilization compared to DAP treatment. The combined use of PSB inoculation and RP fertilization was more economical due to minimal cost and maximum returns. These results suggested that PSB inoculation along with RP fertilization would be an appropriate substitute for chemical phosphate fertilizer application in sustainable agriculture systems.

Aim: Purification of glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) from rat testis; separation and identificationunits and their role in eicosanoid biosynthesis. Methods: Purification of mt testicular GSTs by affit?phy, employing S-hexylglutathione-linked epoxy-activated Sepharose 6B column and separation of indiby reverse phase-high pressure liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). Characterization of affinity purified,um dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and Westem blot analysis. The roGSTs in eicosanoid biosynthesis was determined by incubating GSTs with 5, 6-Leukotriene A_4Me (prostaglandin H_2 (PGH_2) and analyzing the products formed on HPLC/TLC. Results: The present stumajority of rat testicular GSTs are of Y_b size (60%) with molecular weight of 27 kDa. The most preunits, however, are GST Y_(n2) (27% ), followed by GST Y_c (24% ) and GST Y_(nl) (20%). These testiculavery high Leukotriene C_4 (LTC_4) synthase activity with 5, 6-Leukotriene A4Me (LTA_4Me) as theprostaglandin D (PGD) synthase activity with prostaglandin H_2 (PGH_2) as the substrate. Conclusion:testicular GSTs are Y_b sized and are involved in the synthesis of eicosanoids like LTC_4 and PGD_2.(Asian J Androl 2000 Dec; 2: 277-282)

To identify and establish beneficiation techniques for banded hematite quartzite （BHQ） iron ore, a comprehensive research on BHQ ore treatment was carried out. The BHQ ore was assayed as 38.9wt% Fe, 42.5wt% SiO2, and 1.0wt% Al2O3. In this ore, hematite and quartz are present as the major mineral phases where goethite, martite, and magnetite are present in small amounts. The liberation of hematite particles can be enhanced to about 82% by reducing the particle size to below 63 μm. The rejection of silica particles can be obtained by magnetic and flotation separation techniques. Overall, the BHQ ore can be enriched to 65.3wt% Fe at 61.9% iron recovery. A flowsheet has been suggested for the commercial exploitation of the BHQ ore.

Background and Aims:Acute kidney injury(AkI)is com-mon in patients with cirrhosis but the incidence is heteroge-neous among *** performed a meta-analysis to describe the incidence of AkI and its impact on patient mor-tality in patients with *** also evaluated the admis-sion variables predicting development of ***:A systematic search of various databases was performed up to November ***-analyses were performed using ran-dom effects ***:Of 18,474 patients with cirrho-sis from 30 selected studies,5,648 developed AkI,with a pooled incidence of 29%(95% confidence interval[CI]:28-30%,I2 of 99%).In-hospital mortality assessed in eight stud-ies was six-fold higher among AkI patients,as compared to those without AkI(odds ratio[OR]6.72,95%CI:3.47-13,pkI patients(OR 5.90,95%CI:3.21-10.85,p>0.0001).Mor-tality remained significantly high,at days 30 and 90 and even at 1-year follow up after development of *** 12 admission variables analyzed,model for end-stage liver disease score,Child-Pugh-Turcotte stage C,presence of ascites,and pres-ence of sepsis/septic shock were statistically significant risk factors for ***:AkI occurred in about 29% of patients with cirrhosis and is associated with a six-fold in-creased risk of in-hospital *** remained high even in long-term follow-up of 1 *** at risk for AkI development can be recognized at *** studies are needed to develop strategies for improving out-come of these patients.

A series of novel 2-（5-substituted-[ 1,3,4]oxadiazol-2-yl）-benzoxazoles （Ta-h） were synthesized in good yields in two different directions by involving benzoxazole-2-carboxylic acid （1） as raw material and benzoxazole-2-carbonyl chloride （2）, benzoxazole-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester （3）, benzoxazole-2- carboxylic acid hydrazide （4）, benzoxazole-2-carboxylic acid N＇-acetyl hydrazide （Sa-d） and benzoxazole-2-carboxylic acid-ethylidene-hydrazides （6a-d） as reactive intermediates. The chemical structures of all the synthesized compounds were elucidated by their IR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR and mass spectral data. Further, the target compounds were screened for their antimicrobial activity against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

AIM: To report various ocular lesions caused by accidental instillation of superglue. METHODS: Three cases of ocular injuries are described in children aged 6 years, 3 years and 8 months, following accidental instillation of superglue in the eye. RESULTS: In the first case there was sticking of eyelashes in the medial 1/3 of eyelids in both eyes. In the second case sticking of eye lashes was present in the lateral 1/3 of eyelids in the left eye. In the third case, superglue was present on the right cheek, above the right ear and sticking of eyelids in medial 1/3 in right eye. The eyelids were separated by pulling the lid margins with fingers in the first case and later on superglue was removed by trimming the eyelashes; and by direct trimming the eyelashes in second and third cases. There was no injury to other structures of anterior segment in the first two cases. However, removal of the superglue on the cornea resulted in corneal abrasion in the third case which healed with medical treatment and patching of the right eye. CONCLUSION: Accidental instillation of superglue is possible because of the appearance of the tube like eye ointment tube. Immediate medical aid will prevent ocular morbidity.

·AIM:To report various ocular injuries caused by durian fruit. ·METHODS:Three cases of ocular injuries were described in young patients, due to accidental fall of durian fruit on the forehead and face, while they were taking rest/sleeping /playing under the durian tree. ·RESULTS:The ocular injuries observed were lacerating injury of cornea with iris incarceration, hyphema, superficial penetrating injury of sclera and angle recession glaucoma in the right eye of first patient; lacerating injury of cornea with iris prolapse in the left eye of second patient; subconjunctival haemorrhage, traumatic mydriasis and superficial penetrating injury of sclera, commotion retinopathy and macular edema in the left eye of third patient. Vision improved to normal in all the eyes following surgical/ medical/optical treatment. ·CONCLUSION:Evidence of penetrating injury (because of thorns) and blunt injury (because of weight) can be seen in the eyes when durian fruit falls on the face. Vision can be recovered fully with immediate and appropriate treatment in these cases. The ocular injuries can be prevented by educating the public to wear protective metal frame wide goggles and not to sleep/take rest under the durian tree.

Intralenticular metallic foreign body: a case report

A case of retained intralenticular iron piece with signs of mild anterior uveitis at the time of presentation is reported in a 45 year-old man. His vision improved with topical cycloplegics and corticosteroids. After six months, his vision deteriorated grossly due to cataract formation. He regained good vision following removal of foreign body, extracapsular extraction with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation. This case highlights the conservative management of the condition till the patient develops cataract resulting in visual disability; and good visual recovery following cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation.
