High velocity ballistic impact deformation behaviour of Titanium/GFRP Fiber Metal Laminates(FML)has been explored.Both single and multiple projectiles impact conditions were considered.Ti/GFRP FML targets were fabricated with addition of 5%and 10%weight percentage of boron carbide(B_(4)C)particles.Mechanical properties of Ti/GFRP FML targets were determined as per ASTM standards.High velocity ballistic experiments were conducted using Armour Piercing Projectile(APP)of diameter 7.62 mm and velocity ranging between 350 and 450 m/s.Depth of penetration of the projectile into the target was measured.The deformation behaviour of Ti/GFRP targets with and without the presence of ceramic powder(B_(4)C)was investigated.“Ductile hole growth”failure mode was observed for pure GFRP target when subjected to single projectile impact whereas“plugging”failure mode was noted for Ti/GFRP targets.The presence of B_(4)C(5%by weight)particles has significantly improved the ballistic resistance of the Ti/GFRP FML target by offering frictional resistance to the projectile penetration.Further addition(10%by weight)of B_(4)C has reduced the ballistic performance due to agglomeration.None of the targets showed‘brittle cracking’or‘fragmentation’failures.When compared to the published results of Aluminium(Al 1100/GFRP and Al 6061/GFRP)FMLs,Ti/GFRP FML showed lesser DoP which increases its potential application to aerospace industry.

COVID-19 is a growing problem worldwide with a high mortality rate.As a result,the World Health Organization(WHO)declared it a pandemic.In order to limit the spread of the disease,a fast and accurate diagnosis is required.A reverse transcript polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR)test is often used to detect the disease.However,since this test is time-consuming,a chest computed tomography(CT)or plain chest X-ray(CXR)is sometimes indicated.The value of automated diagnosis is that it saves time and money by minimizing human effort.Three significant contributions are made by our research.Its initial purpose is to use the essential finetuning methodology to test the action and efficiency of a variety of vision models,ranging from Inception to Neural Architecture Search(NAS)networks.Second,by plotting class activationmaps(CAMs)for individual networks and assessing classification efficiency with AUC-ROC curves,the behavior of these models is visually analyzed.Finally,stacked ensembles techniques were used to provide greater generalization by combining finetuned models with six ensemble neural networks.Using stacked ensembles,the generalization of the models improved.Furthermore,the ensemble model created by combining all of the finetuned networks obtained a state-of-the-art COVID-19 accuracy detection score of 99.17%.The precision and recall rates were 99.99%and 89.79%,respectively,highlighting the robustness of stacked ensembles.The proposed ensemble approach performed well in the classification of the COVID-19 lesions on CXR according to the experimental results.

An endophytic fungus Pestalotiopsis microspora isolated from the fruits of Manilkara zapota was cultured in potato dextrose broth media.Chromatographic separation of the EtOAc extract of the broth and mycelium led to the isolation of a new azaphilonoid named pitholide E(1),in addition to previously identified pitholide B(2),pitholide D(3),pestalotin(LL-P880α)(4),PC-2(5),LL-P880β(6),tyrosol(7)and 4-oxo-4H-pyran-3-acetic acid(8).An endophytic fungus P.microspora from M.zapota and the isolation of compounds 1-5,7 and 8 from P.microspora are reported here for the first time.

Objective: To review the management experience of a consecutive series of patients presenting as acute surgical abdomen whom were ultimately diagnosed to have DF(Dengue fever)/ DHF(Dengue heamorrhagic fever),Methods: Clinical data of all cases of apparent acute abdomen(AA) which were later confirmed as having DF/DHF reviewed by two surgical units from December 2012 to December 2013 were analyzed,Initially confirmed patients with DF/DHF who developed abdominal symptoms were not considered,Results: Out of the seventeen cases(7 males,age range 10-71 years) presented with fever and AA; appendicitis,cholecystitis,pancreatitis and non-specific peritonitis were suspected initially in 8,5,1 and 3 cases,respectively,Neutropenia or thrombocytopenia signifying DF/DHF occurred only in 11 patients at first evaluation thus six remained as surgical candidates beyond 24 h,One patient underwent appendicectomy with a prolonged hospital stay,DF was confirmed by serology in all patients,latest by fourth day of admission,One required blood product transfusion,4 needed critical care treatment and there was 1 death,Conclusions: DF/DHF misleads the clinicians when it presents as AA,Initial heamatological and ultrasonographic findings may be equivocal creating a diagnostic and management dilemma,Vigilant clinical suspicion and early dengue serological assessment is advisable in equivocal cases of AAs with fever in dengue endemic areas,to confirm/exclude the infection in order to avoid unnecessary surgical morbidity in the presence of DF.

Soils used for rice(Oryza sativa L.) cultivation in some areas contain high concentrations of arsenic(As) due to irrigation with groundwater containing As and intensive use of agrochemicals or industrial residues containing As. To restrict rice uptake of As in these soils, approaches to reduce As input and bioavailability must be considered. One approach to reduce As input into rice soils or uptake by rice is cultivating rice under aerobic, intermittent flooding, or alternate wetting and drying(AWD) conditions, rather than in submerged soils, or use of irrigation water low in As. For reducing As bioavailability in soil, aerobic or AWD rice culture and application of biochar, sulfur(S), and/or rice polish to soil are promising. Moreover, use of As-hyperaccumulating plant species(e.g.,Pteris vittata L.) in rotation or combinations with favourable plant species(e.g., Azolla, Chlorella, or Nannochloropsis species) can also be promoted, in addition to using rice cultivars that are tolerant to As. Though applications of high doses of phosphorus(P), iron(Fe), and silicon(Si) fertilizers have shown promise in many instances, these methods have to be practiced carefully, because negative effects have also been reported, although such incidents are rare. Major factors affecting As speciation and bioavailability in soil are chemical properties such as redox status, p H, and Fe, P, Si, and S concentrations, physical properties such as texture and organic matter, and biological properties such as methylation activity by soil microorganisms. However, as many of these factors interact,long-term examination under field conditions is needed before measures are recommended for and implemented in farmers' fields.

Batteries often show the coupling change of multiple physical field characteristic parameters in the charging or discharging processes.Conventional battery modeling and characterization methods mainly focus on electrical or thermal parameters.Considering that battery state change can cause a change in the mechanical structure,research on the vibration characteristic modeling and characterization of a plastic-cased lithium-ion battery is carried out.By analyzing the mechanical structure of the battery,the first principles modeling method is selected to model the battery's mechanical performance.The vibration data in the process of battery charging and discharging are measured by a laser Doppler vibrometer(LDV).The obtained experimental data are used to identify the mechanical parameters of the battery.Based on the experimentael results,the root mean square error(RMSE)of the frequency domain amplitude fitting result of the model is less than 11.36%.The effectiveness of the battery mechanical vibration model is verified.The model and the characterization method provide tools for nondestructive battery state evaluation.

Nutrient resorption from senescing leaves of epiphytes,hemiparasites and their hosts in tropical forests of Sri Lanka

Aims Epiphytes and hemiparasites do not have direct access to soil nutri-ents.Epiphytes acquire nutrients through symbiosis,foliar leachates and throughfall,whilst hemiparasites have specialized structures(haustoria)to acquire nutrients from their host.Irrespective of the green leaf nutrient concentrations of epiphytes,hemiparasites and their hosts,nutrient-resorption efficiency and proficiency are expected to be the greater in epiphytes than in their hosts and in hemiparasites.These hypotheses were tested.Methods Green and senescing leaves of epiphytes(n=23),hemiparasites(n=9)and their hosts were collected,and leaf area,leaf dry weight,nutrient(nitrogen-N,phosphorus-P,potassium-k,calcium-Ca)and sodium(Na)concentrations were measured,and resorption effi-ciency(%)and proficiency were calculated.Important Findings Concentrations of N,P,k,Ca and Na in green leaves of epiphytes and hemiparasites were either similar or greater than those of their hosts,except for lower green leaf N concentration in hemiparasites.Epiphytes resorbed N,P,k and Na,while their hosts resorbed only N,P and k.Hemiparasites and their hosts resorbed P,k and Na while N was not resorbed.Overall,resorption efficiency was great-est in epiphytes>hemiparasites=hosts,while the resorption pro-ficiencies were similar or greater for epiphytes and hemiparasites compared with their hosts,except for N in hemiparasites.Relatively high nutrient concentrations in epiphytes were associated with greater resorption efficiency.Understanding contrasting nutrient concentrations in epiphytes,hemiparasites and their hosts will be important in recognising their contribution to ecosystem nutrient cycling.

Neofusicoccum parvum,an endophytic fungus isolated from Elaeocarpus serratus(Ceylon Olive;family Elaeocarpaceae),was grown for 3 weeks in potato dextrose broth.Chromatographic separation of the ethyl acetate extracts from the culture filtrate and mycelium over silica gel,Sephadex LH-20 and preparative thin layer chromatography furnished(R)-7-hydroxymellein(1),(3R,4R)-4-hydroxymellein(2),(3R,4S)-4-hydroxymellein(3),(R)-5-hydroxymellein(4),(R)-mellein(5),(3R,4R)-4,7-dihydroxymellein(6),(6R,7S)-dia-asperlin(7),CJ-14445(8)and 13,14,15,16-tetranorlabd-7-ene-19,6β:12,17-diolide(9).The structures of known compounds 1–9 were determined by spectroscopic methods and comparison with reported data.This is the first report of the isolation of an endophytic fungus from E.serratus,and the isolation of compounds 1,4,6,8 and 9 from N.parvum.It is important to note that compounds 1–7 are small molecules with an oxygen heterocyclic ring system.These compounds can be used as starting materials in the synthesis of pharmaceutically important large molecules with oxygen heterocyles.

An endophytic fungus Aspergillus fumigatus,isolated from the fruits of Solanum insanum L.,was cultured in potato dextrose broth medium.Chromatographic separation of the EtOAc extract led to the isolation of six secondary metabolites,identified as pseurotin A(1),fumigaclavine C(2),monomethylsulochrin(3),trypacidin(4),fumiquinazoline C(5)and guignasulfide(6)by spectral means.Compounds 2 and 3 showed brine shrimp toxicity with IC50 values of 147 and 74.2μM,respectively,while compounds 4 and 5 showed slight inhibition on the growth of fungal pathogen Cladosporium cladosporioides.This is the first report of the isolation of guignasulfide(6)from A.fumigatus,which has been previously isolated only from an endophytic fungus Guignardia sp.
