Peripheral nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, including the use of tubular nerve guidance conduits(tnGCs). however, the use of tnGCs results in poor functional recovery and central necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which limits their application to short nerve lesion defects(typically shorter than 3 cm). Given the importance of vascularization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabling the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tnGC would help eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the application of macroscopic holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tnGCs and compared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tnGCs with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tnGCs) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histological analyses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tnGCs induced the growth of blood vessels from the adjacent tissue to the intraluminal neovascular formation. A significantly higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found compared with autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal coaptation point compared with the silk^(–) tnGCs at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(critical size) sciatic nerve defect model, we again observed a distinct ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tnGCs, but without improved functional recovery at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that macroporous tnGCs increase the vascular supply of regenerating nerves and facilitate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defect model but not in a critical-size defect model. Precision livestock Farming(PlF)is potentially one of the most powerful developments amongst a number of interesting new and upcoming technologies that have the potential to revolutionise the livestock farming *** properly implemented,PlF or Smart Farming could(1)improve or at least objectively document animal welfare on farms;(2)reduce greenhouse gas(GhG)emission and improve environmental performance of farms;(3)facilitate product segmentation and better marketing of livestock products;(4)reduce illegal trading of livestock products;and(5)improve the economic stability of rural ***,there are only a few examples of successful commercialisation of PlF technologies introduced by a small number of commercial companies which are actively involved in the PlF commercialisation *** ensure that the potential of PlF is taken to the industry,it is recommended to:(1)establish a new service industry;(2)verify,demonstrate and publicise the benefits of PlF;(3)better coordinate the efforts of different industry and academic organisations interested in the development and implementation of PlF technologies on farms;and(4)encourage the commercial sectors to assist with professionally managed product development.

nonlinear stability of advanced sandwich cylindrical shells comprising porous functionally graded material and carbon nanotube reinforced composite layers under elevated temperature

The nonlinear stability of sandwich cylindrical shells comprising porous functionally graded material(FGM) and carbon nanotube reinforced composite(CnTRC)layers subjected to uniform temperature rise is investigated. Two sandwich models corresponding to CnTRC and FGM face sheets are proposed. Carbon nanotubes(CnTs) in the CnTRC layer are embedded into a matrix according to functionally graded distributions. The effects of porosity in the FGM and the temperature dependence of properties of all constituent materials are considered. The effective properties of the porous FGM and CnTRC are determined by using the modified and extended versions of a linear mixture rule, respectively. The basic equations governing the stability problem of thin sandwich cylindrical shells are established within the framework of the Donnell shell theory including the von k’arm’an-Donnell nonlinearity. These equations are solved by using the multi-term analytical solutions and the Galerkin method for simply supported *** critical buckling temperatures and postbuckling paths are determined through an iteration procedure. The study reveals that the sandwich shell model with a CnTRC core layer and relatively thin porous FGM face sheets can have the best capacity of thermal load carrying. In addition, unlike the cases of mechanical loads, porosities have beneficial effects on the nonlinear stability of sandwich shells under the thermal load. It is suggested that an appropriate combination of advantages of FGM and CnTRC can result in optimal efficiency for advanced sandwich structures.

Gamma and X-ray radiation compatibility of Ti–Ta–hf–Zr alloys used for coronary stent applications

We have studied the gamma and X-ray radiation compatibility of Ti-based alloys such as Ti–37 Ta–26 hf–13 Zr-24(wt%) [Alloy 1], Ti–40 Ta–22 hf–11.7 Zr-26.3(wt%) [Alloy 2], Ti–45 Ta–18.4 hf–10 Zr-26.6(wt%) [Alloy3], Ti–50 Ta–15 hf–8 Zr-27(wt%) [Alloy 4], Ti–55 Ta–12 hf–7 Zr-26(wt%) [Alloy 5], and Ti–60 Ta–10 hf–5 Zr-25(wt%) [Alloy 6]. Gamma and X-ray radiation compatibility is studied by evaluating the mass attenuation coefficient,mean free path, hVl, TVl effective atomic number,effective electron density, exposure buildup factor, and relative dose. We have compared these parameters for studied alloys with that of arteries. The alloys Ti–55 Ta–12 hf–7 Zr-26 and Ti–60 Ta–10 hf–5 Zr-25 have added properties such as gamma/X-ray radiation compatibility,high elastic admissible strain, high mechanical strength,and excellent biocompatibility. hence, we may suggest that, among Ti–Ta–hf–Zr alloys, these alloys are best materials for coronary stent applications.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy(ARPES)and torque magnetometry(TM)measurements have been carried out to study the electronic structures of a correlated topological insulator(TI)candidate Yb *** observed clear surface states on the[001]surface centered at theГ^- and М^- points of the surface Brillouin ***,the fermiology revealed by the quantum oscillation of TM measurements agrees excellently with ARPES ***,the band structures we observed suggest that the band inversion in Yb B6 happens between the Yb5 dand B2bands,instead of the Yb5dand Yb4fbands as suggested by previous theoretical investigation,which will help settle the heavy debate regarding the topological nature of samarium/ytterbium hexaborides.

lug joints are preferred joineries for transferring heavy loads to parent components in aerospace *** experience corrosion due to environmental conditions,improper surface finishes and rubbing displacement between the pin and *** causes damage of different sizes and shapes near the *** degradation due to corrosion-induced damage is modelled as a through-pit at one of the identified critical locations through stress *** effect of this pit on fatigue crack initiation life is ***-hole is pre-stressed by cold-working and the benefits of inducing plastic wake on the intended performance of the lug joint during the damages due to corrosion are brought out and compared with non-cold-worked *** analysis is performed on this lug joint with *** results obtained highlight the benefits of cold-working and the methodology can be extended to damage growth and analyse the effect of surface treatments for better structural integrity of components of aerospace vehicles.

A critical fault detection analysis & fault time in a UPFC transmission line

This paper discusses a critical study of fault detection and fault time analysis in a Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) transmission line. here the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) approach are used for processing the faulty current signal to obtain fundamental current signal. The extracted fault current signals from the current transformer are fed to DWT and DFT approach for computing spectral energy (SE). The differential spectral energy (DSE) of phase currents are evaluated by taking the difference of SE obtained at sending and receiving end. The DSE is the key factor for deciding the fault in any of the phase or not. The Daubechy mother wavelet (db4) is used here because of its high accuracy of detection with less processing time. The novelty of the scheme is that it can accurately detect the critical fault variation of the line. number of simulations are validated at the extreme condition of the line and compared to other conventional existing scheme. Multi-phase fault in double circuit line, CT saturation, UPFC operating condition (series voltage and angle), UPFC location and wind speed variation including wind farm simulation are validated to verify the performance of the scheme. The advantages of the scheme is that it works effectively to detect the fault at any stage of critical condition of the line and fault detection time remains within 20 msec (less than one cycle period). This scheme protects both internal and external zone including parameter variation of the line.

Empirical model for fusion cross sections of Ca-induced reactions

A new empirical formula for the astrophysical S-factor has been suggested as a function of the Coulomb interaction parameter,center of mass energy,and barrier *** 22 fusion reactions with ^(40,48)Ca as projectiles were considered for different targets,leading to compound nuclei with atomic and mass numbers varying between 40≤Z≤≤Z≤112 and 88≤A≤27888≤A≤278,*** fusion cross-sections have been estimated using the geometric factor,the Gamow-Sommerfield factor,and the empirical formula for the *** study's findings showed better agreement with those of available experiments when compared to Wong's *** present work leads to a smaller standard deviation value than Wong's formula when used to correlate the experimental data of calcium-induced fusion ***'s formula provides a good approximation of fusion cross-sections when the center of mass energy is below the fusion barrier when compared to above the fusion barrier.

A dynamic analysis of an elastic gradient-dependent polymeric fiber subjected to a periodic excitation is considered. A nonlinear gradient elasticity constitutive equation with strain- dependent gradient coefficients is first derived and the dispersive wave propagation properties for its linearized counterpart are briefly discussed. For the linearized problem a variational formulation is also developed to obtain related boundary conditions of both classical （standard） and non-classical （gradient） type. Analytical solutions in the form of Fourier series for the fiber＇s displacement and strain fields are provided. The solutions depend on a dimensionless scale parameter （the diameter to length radio d = D/l） and, therefore, size effects are captured.
