New non-and less-invasive techniques have been developed to overcome the procedural and operator related burden of the fractional flow reserve(FFR)for the assessment of potentially significant stenosis in the coronary *** FFR-techniques can obviate the need for the additional flow or pressure wires as used for FFR *** review provides an overview of the developments and validation of the virtual FFR-algorithms,states the challenges,discusses the upcoming clinical trials,and postulates the future role of virtual FFR in the clinical practice.

This article reports the latest development of a wireless sensing system,named Martlet,on high-g shock acceleration *** Martlet sensing node design is based on a Texas Instruments Piccolo microcontroller,with clock frequency programmable up to 90 *** high clock frequency of the microcontroller enables Martlet to support high-frequency data acquisition and high-speed onboard *** addition,the extensible design of the Martlet node conveniently allows incorporation of multiple sensor *** this study,a high-g accelerometer interface board is developed to allow Martlet to work with the selected microelectromechanical system(MEMS)high-g *** low-pass and highpass filters,amplification gains are also implemented on the high-g accelerometer interface *** impact experiments are conducted to validate the performance of the Martlet wireless sensing system with the high-g accelerometer *** results of this study show that the performance of the wireless sensing system is comparable to the cabled system.

This study aimed to propose climatic zones in the Brazilian semiarid region using multivariate statistical techniques and to characterize these zones for energy efficiency applications in *** component analysis(PCA)was used to select the variables with the greatest practical *** this selection,hierarchical cluster analysis(HCA)was used to spatially define climatically homogeneous *** each defined zone,the most feasible constructive thermal conditioning strategies were defined,and the thermal indexes of heat and degree-hours of cooling and heating were *** result,PCA reduced the dimensionality of the initial database from 104 to 48 variables,among which the climatic and bioclimatic variables related to temperature stood *** the HCA,three climatic zones were defined for the Brazilian semiarid *** all zones,there was a high demand for constructive conditioning strategies,which have to be adopted in more than half of the total annual *** proposed zoning is adapted to the climatic aspects of the Brazilian semiarid and has significant potential for applications in construction planning in this ***,the methodology presented can be applied for establishing climatic zones in other regions,which can contribute to increasing the energy efficiency of buildings.

Population genetic structuring is common among herbivorous insects and frequently is associated with divergent host plants, such as crops and their wild relatives. Previous studies showed population genetic structuring in corn leafhopper Dulbulus maidis in Mexico, such that the species consists of two sympatric, host plant-associated populations: an abundant and widespread "pestiferous” population on maize (Zea mays mays), and a small and localized "wild" population on perennial teosinte (Zea diploperennis). a maize wild relative with a limited distribution. This study addressed whether assortative mating and immigrant inviability mediate genetic structuring of corn leafliopper by comparing the mating and reproductive successes of pestiferous and wild females that colonize their nonassociated host plants against the successes of females colonizing their associated host plants. Assortative mating was assessed by comparing mating frequencies and premating and mating times among females of each population on each host plant: immigrant inviability was assessed by comparing, across two generations, the fecundity, survival, development time, sex ratio, and population growth rate among leafhopper populations and host plants. Our results showed that on maize, and compared to resident, pestiferous females, wild females were more likely to mate, and greater proportions of their offspring survived to adult stage and were daughters;consequently, the per-generation population growth rate on maize was greater for immigrant, wild leafhoppers compared to resident, pestiferous leafhoppers. Our results suggested that wild leafhoppers emigrating to maize have a fitness advantage over resident, pestiferous leafhoppers, while immigrant pestiferous and resident wild leafhoppers on teosinte have similar fitnesses.

Simple Food Group Diversity as a Proxy Indicator for Iron and Vitamin A Status of Rural Primary School Children in Uganda

Children in resource poor settings are at a high risk of inadequate iron and vitamin A intake when diets lack diversity and are dominated by staple foods. Yet comparative information on diet quality among school children is scarce. The objective of the study was to assess the potential of simple food group diversity to serve as a proxy indicator of iron and vitamin A status among rural school children in Uganda. A cross sectional correlation model of associations between Food Group Diversity (FGD) and iron and vitamin A status was used. We analyzed 8 schools in kumi District, Uganda, randomly selected from the 34 schools that participated in the main part of the study. Our sample included primary school children, aged between 9-15 years (n = 172). Food group diversity and food variety (FV) were calculated from both a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and a 24-hour dietary recall. The FGD and FVS were tested against iron (as serum ferritin) and vitamin A (as serum retinol) status. The FGD (based on FFQ data) was 9.6 (±1.9). There was a positive correlation between 24-hour recall and FFQ for consumption of cereals (Corr. Coef = 0.28;p 0.05), which was also the most highly consumed group (98.9% & 86.9% by FFQ and 24-hour recall;respectively). Consistent with other studies, increase in the number of food groups significantly increased serum ferritin and serum retinol measures (p 0.001). Presence of at least one food item in the “roots & tubers”;“cereals”;and “pulses/nuts”, significantly increased serum ferritin and serum retinol concentrations (p 0.01). We speculate that simple food group diversity may reflect intake and serve as a simple indicator of iron and vitamin A status among school children. Strategies aimed at increasing dietary diversity in the community may benefit the families of these children and improve their micronutrient status.
