Glutaraldehyde(Glut)is an extensively used sterilant and fixative for the crosslinking of natural soft tissue biomaterials like bovine pericardium(BP)to provide stability and is required for its application in vivo.There is plenty of debate around the reaction mechanism of Glut with natural biomaterials.Differential scanning calorimetry(DSC)is a commonly used technique that is typically used to measure the thermal profile of polymers.However,a variation known as quasi-isothermal modulated differential scanning calorimetry(QiMDSC)has been utilised for the analysis of polymorphic transformations in both the pharmaceutical and food industries.This communication will address QiMDSC as a method for analysing soft tissue biomaterials and their crosslinking mechanisms and how it can be applied to other biomaterial applications.

Malaria is responsible for approximately three-quarters of a million deaths in humans globally each year.Most of the morbidity and mortality reported are from Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia,where the disease is endemic.In non-endemic areas,malaria is the most common cause of imported infection and is associated with significant mortality despite recent advancements and investments in elimination programs.Severe malaria often requires intensive care unit admission and can be complicated by cerebral malaria,respiratory distress,acute kidney injury,bleeding complications,and co-infection.Intensive care management includes prompt diagnosis and early initiation of effective antimalarial therapy,recognition of complications,and appropriate supportive care.However,the lack of diagnostic capacities due to limited advances in equipment,personnel,and infrastructure presents a challenge to the effective diagnosis and management of malaria.This article reviews the clinical classification,diagnosis,and management of malaria as relevant to critical care clinicians,highlighting the role of diagnostic capacity,treatment options,and supportive care.

Comparison of vergence mechanisms between university students with good and poor sleep quality

AIM:To compare the vergence mechanisms between good and poor sleepers in university students.METHODS:A total of 64 university students were recruited in this study.The validated Malay version of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire(PSQI-M)was used to measure the participants’sleep quality over the past month.Participants were categorized as good sleepers(n=32)and poor sleepers(n=32)based on the PSQI-M scores.Heterophoria and fusional vergences were measured at distance and near.Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare heterophoria,negative fusional vergence(NFV),and positive fusional vergence(PFV)at distance and near between good and poor sleepers.Spearman correlation analysis was used to study the relationship between PSQI-M score and PFV at distance.RESULTS:Both distance and near heterophorias were not significantly different between good and poor sleepers(P>0.05).There was a difference in distance PFV(P0.05).Distance PFV was negatively correlated with PSQI-M score(rs=-0.33,P<0.05).CONCLUSION:University students with poor sleep quality demonstrates a reduced ability to maintain fusion with increasing convergence demand at distance.Sleep quality assessment during binocular vision examination in university students is recommended.

Background:The mastoid process can be utilized in forensic identification due to its resistance to alterations and population variations in its morphology.The study investigated the role of mastoid parameters in the determination of sex in a Nigerian population.Aims and Objectives:The aim of this study was to determine the gender differences in measurements of the mastoid process.Furthermore,the study aimed at assessing the percentage accuracy of using the mastoid variables in sex discrimination.Materials and Methods:This cross-sectional study used computed tomographic images of the brain,stored in the radiology unit of a referral hospital in Delta State,Nigeria.Permission was granted by the hospital’s Ethics Board.The measurements of the mastoid process were taken on images of 310 patients(170 males and 140 females)aged 20-80 years.Data were summarized using means and standard deviations.Gender,side,and age group comparisons were assessed using the independent t-test,paired t-test,and analysis of variance,respectively.The association between variables was probed using Pearson’s correlation test.The discriminant function analysis was used to determine the accuracy of correct sex allocation.The probability value was set at<0.05.Results:All the measurements were larger in males than in females(P<0.05).All except the conventional height,oblique sagittal diameter,and mediolateral inclination angle showed significant differences between age groups(P<0.05).The true height and oblique coronal diameter showed a significant positive correlation with age(0

Social determinants of health(SDOH)affect quality of life.We investigated SDOH impacts on self-perceived resilience among people with adult congenital heart disease(ACHD).Secondary analysis of data from two com-plementary studies:a survey study conducted May 2021–June 2022 and a qualitative study conducted June 2020–August 2021.Resilience was assessed through CD-RISC10 score(range 0–40,higher scores reﬂect greater self-perceived resilience)and interview responses.Sociodemographic and SDOH(education,employment,living situa-tion,monetary stability,ﬁnancial dependency,area deprivation index)data were collected by healthcare record review and self-report.We used linear regression with robust standard errors to analyze survey data and performed a thematic analysis of interview data.Survey participants(N=127)mean age was 42±14 years;51%were female,87%white.ACHD was moderate(75%)or complex(25%);41%functional class C or D.Resilience(mean 30±7)varied by monetary stability:compared to people with difﬁculty paying bills,resilience was 15.0 points higher(95%CI:6.9–23.1,pknowledge can inform the development of resilience interventions for this population.

The mining process involves drilling and excavation, resulting in the production of waste rock and tailings. The waste materials are then removed and stored in designated areas. This study aims to evaluate the mechanical strength and the environmental and economic impact of using Coltan Mining Waste (CMW) as a substitute for aggregates in concrete and mortar production. To achieve this, the CMW needs to be characterised. The Dreux Gorisse method was primarily used to produce concrete with a strength of 20 MPa at 28 days. The mortars, on the other hand, were formulated according to the NF P 18-452 standard. The environmental impact of using CMW as substitutes for natural aggregates in the production of concrete and mortar was analysed using SimaPro software. The results showed that mortars and concrete made with CMW have comparable compressive strengths to the reference mortar and concrete;reduce the negative impact on ecosystem quality, human health, resources, and climate change. It has also been shown that the substitution of aggregates by CMW reduces the cost of concrete and mortar as a function of the distance from the aggregate footprint.

Delivery of acupuncture in the setting of a clinical trial is a unique practice that diverges significantly from the delivery of acupuncture in a real-world clinical setting. Research acupuncturists, particularly those trained in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), are often required to set aside valued precepts of traditional care, including diagnosing imbalances, individualizing treatment, and forging a therapeutic relationship with patients. TCM-trained acupuncturists express mixed feelings about participating in clinical trials. Many are eager to play a vital role in the advancement of acupuncture science and appreciate the need for strict protocol adherence to minimize bias. However, the acupuncturist(s) may also have concerns about clinical trial methodology, including but not limited to the delivery of a control condition, e.g., sham acupuncture. Investigators should anticipate certain questions and even a level of resistance to the requirements of research among acupuncturists and be prepared to address them. This manuscript presents a brief review of the subjective experience of the research acupuncturist within the available scientific literature as it pertains to the delivery of active and sham clinical research protocols. Our goals are to better understand the perspectives of acupuncturists who may participate in clinical research, so that their concerns may be addressed in study design and methodology. To that end, we suggest the creation of a novel training program specifically for clinical trial acupuncturists, intended for qualified TCM-and Western-trained practitioners, that would help to standardize the research acupuncturist’s role and help to strengthen the design and execution of acupuncture studies.
