In this study, performances comparison to discriminate five mental states of five artificial neural network (ANN) training methods were investigated. Wavelet Packet Transform (WPT) was used for feature extraction of the relevant frequency bands from raw electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. The five ANN training methods used were (a) Gradient Descent Back Propagation (b) Levenberg-Marquardt (c) Resilient Back Propagation (d) Conjugate Learning Gradient Back Propagation and (e) Gradient Descent Back Propagation with movementum.

Cr(VI) is a widespread environmental contaminant and a known human carcinogen. Biosorption is a very common method to remove toxic Cr(VI) from industrial waste water. In biosorption Cr(VI) is reduced to less toxic Cr(III) and adsorbed in biosorbent as Cr(III). Effective biosorbents contain hydroxy groups;it may be aliphatic or aromatic. kinetics of reduction of Cr(VI) by an aromatic alcohol, benzyl alcohol, (which is an important volatile component of flowers of some night blooming plants) in micellar media have been studied spectrophotometrically. Micellar media is a probe to establish the mechanistic paths of reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Effects of electrolytes are studied to support the proposed reaction mechanism. Suitable surfactant & suitable concentration of electrolyte enhance the biosorption property.

Objective: (TVNOTES) [1], currently the most popular of the NOTES procedures being performed, offers the safest access point while avoiding a breach in the gastrointestinal tract to gain intraperitoneal access. But are women ready to embrace TVNOTES? Although similar studies have been conducted in developed nations, the authors aimed to seek the opinions of Indian women towards TVNOTES. Design: This study presents the results of a survey on attitudes of Indian women towards TVNOTES. 300 women attending a gynaecology out patients’ clinic were administered a questionnaire which sought out the percentage of Indian women concerned with surgical scars, their preference between TVNOTES and conventional laparoscopic surgery and apprehensions towards the vagina being used as an entry site for surgery. Results: 85.67% of the participants opted for scarless intra-abdominal surgery. Upon revealing that the surgery would be performed transvaginally (TV), reservations were unveiled, with 67.33% of all respondents being either unhappy or unsure about undergoing TV surgery. Results were initially equivocal when asked to choose between TVNOTES and conventional laparoscopic surgery, but when informed that TVNOTES may be as safe and efficacious as conventional laparoscopic surgery, the scales tipped in favour of TVNOTES, with three-fourths of the respondents opting for the latter. Conclusions: Although TVNOTES has captured the imagination and attention of surgeons, existing data suggest that the beneficiaries (i.e. women) remain to be convinced. This study suggests that Indian women will embrace TV surgery once its safety is proven, improved cosmesis being a predominant factor in making this choice.

More than 60% human infectious diseases have zoonotic origin. Cross species transmission of pathogens is a continuous, dynamic process that occurs throughout the world, giving rise to epizootic (temporary, limited infection), endemic (on-going infection limited to a defined geographic region) and pandemic viral infections (infection spreading to every part of the world) like the current COVID-19 pandemic, which depends on the existing conditions on the ground. In Nov 2021, sudden mortality of numerous migrating demoiselle cranes was reported from their resting site near Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The symptomatic cranes became gradually weak and were unable to fly. They eventually fell dead which caused concern locally, given the current prevailing SARS-CoV-2 pandemic situation the world over. By the end of Dec 2021, the number of cranes with mortality and morbidity reduced, making it a temporary “epizootic infection”. Molecular diagnosis carried out at a specialized laboratory identified the etiological agent to be the highly pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus H5N1 (HPAIV), which has been responsible for morbidity of avian species from different parts of the world. There was no report of spreading the H5N1 AIV infection from the infected migratory cranes to nearby chicken farms or pig farms for now. In the absence of vaccines against the highly pathogenic H5N1 AIVs, and the inherent ability of influenza viruses, both avian AIV and human IAVs to constantly mutate its envelope gene or the surface antigens, resulting from the error-prone nature of the viral RNA Polymerase enzyme are the roadblocks for development of a universal, broad-spectrum influenza vaccine. Even when such a universal vaccine against H5N1 is available, vaccinating a large number of wild migratory cranes would be difficult. However, it is possible and indeed necessary to vaccinate chickens in poultry farms and pigs in farms that raise pigs for human consumption.

Ayurvedic and other alternative medical practi-tioners throughout the world have been using pulse diagnosis to detect disease and the organ at distress by feeling the palpations at three close yet precise positions of the radial artery. This paper presents a robust electro-mechanical system, ‘Nadi Yantra’ which uses piezoelectric based pressure sensors to capture the signals from the radial artery. Morphology of the waveforms obtained from our system concurs with standard physiological arterial signals. Reproducibility and stability of the system has been verified. Signal processing techniques were applied to obtain features such as amplitude, power spectral density, bandpower and spectral centroid to reflect variations in signals from the three channels. Further, wavelet based techniques were used to process the pressure signals and percussion peaks were identified. The interval between the percussion peaks was used to calculate Heart Rate Varibility (HRV), a useful tool for assessing the status of the autonomic nervous system of the human body non-invasively. Time domain indices were calculated from direct measurement of peak-peak (PP) intervals and from differences between the PP intervals. Frequency domain indices such as very low frequency (VLF) power, low frequency (LF) power, high frequency (HF) power, LF/HF ratio were also calculated. Thereafter, nonlinear Poincare analysis was carried out. A map of consecutive PP intervals was fitted to an ellipse using least squares method. Results from 7 datasets are depicted in this paper. A novel pressure pulse recording instrument is deve loped for the objective assessment of the ancient sci-ence of pulse diagnosis. The features calculated using multi resolution wavelet analysis show potential in the evaluation of the autonomic nervous system of the human body.

Hand gestures are powerful means of communication among humans and sign language is the most natural and expressive way of communication for dump and deaf people. In this work, real-time hand gesture system is proposed. Experimental setup of the system uses fixed position low-cost web camera with 10 mega pixel resolution mounted on the top of monitor of computer which captures snapshot using Red Green Blue [RGB] color space from fixed distance. This work is divided into four stages such as image preprocessing, region extraction, feature extraction, feature matching. First stage converts captured RGB image into binary image using gray threshold method with noise removed using median filter [medfilt2] and Guassian filter, followed by morphological operations. Second stage extracts hand region using blob and crop is applied for getting region of interest and then “Sobel” edge detection is applied on extracted region. Third stage produces feature vector as centroid and area of edge, which will be compared with feature vectors of a training dataset of gestures using Euclidian distance in the fourth stage. Least Euclidian distance gives recognition of perfect matching gesture for display of ASL alphabet, meaningful words using file handling. This paper includes experiments for 26 static hand gestures related to A-Z alphabets. Training dataset consists of 100 samples of each ASL symbol in different lightning conditions, different sizes and shapes of hand. This gesture recognition system can reliably recognize single-hand gestures in real time and can achieve a 90.19% recognition rate in complex background with a “minimum-possible constraints” approach.

Aim: To determine the relationship of carotid plaque, intima media thickness (IMT), resistivity index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) and prevalence of different risk factors with acute ischemic stroke and stroke subtypes in both diabetic and non-diabetic subjects. Materials and methods: 80 cases of acute ischemic strokes and 40 healthy controls were included in the study. The plaque, IMT, RI and PI were measured by carotid duplex ultrasound. Results: 31 subjects were Type 2 diabetic, 54 hypertensive while 25 were both diabetic and hypertensive. 23 cases (28.75%) had lacunar stroke (LACI), 32 (40%) stroke involving partial anterior circulation(PACI), 10(12.5%) stroke in posterior circulation (PACI) and 15(18.75%) stroke involving total anterior circulation(TACI) respectively. The mean IMT (0.88 ± 0.19mm), RI(0.76 ± 0.05) and PI(1.71 ± 0.19) of patients and mean IMT (0.6±0.09mm), RI (0.61 ± 0.06) and PI (1.53 ± 0.11) of controls were statistically significant (p-0.000). The mean values of IMT, PI and RI were significantly higher in diabetics (IMT-0.90 ± 0.16 VS 0.64 ± 0.11, p-0.013;PI-1.76 ± 0.20 VS 1.49 ± 0.09, P-0.000 and RI-0.76 ± 0.04 VS 0.59 ± 0.06, P-0.000) and similarly the mean values for IMT, PI and RI in hypertensives as compared to controls (IMT-0.88 ± 0.16 vs 0.65 ± 0.10, P-0.006;PI1.69 ± 0.18 vs 1.49 ± 0.09, P-0.000 and RI 0.76 ± 0.04 vs 0.59 ± 0.06, P-0.000). The mean IMT, PI and RI were increased significantly in smokers compared to controls (IMT-0.93 ± 0.20 vs 0.63 ± 0.06, P-0.000;PI-1.82 ± 0.22 vs 1.49 ± 0.09, P-0.000 and RI-0.77 ± 0.04 vs 0.59 ± 0.06, P-0.000). Type 3 plaque accounted for 27 (56.2%) cases and Type 2 plaque 12 (25%) cases. The total number of plaques in patients as compared to controls were significantly more (P-0.0034) and the mean plaque area was 46 mm2 for cases and 20 mm2 for control (P-0.0001).
