Electric potential near a wall for plasma with the surface produced negative ions with magnetic field increasing toward a wall is investigated analytically. The potential profile is derived analytically by using a plasma-sheath equation, where negative ions produced on the plasma grid （PG） surface are considered in addition to positive ions and electrons. The potential profile depends on the amount and the temperature of the surface produced negative ions and the profile of the magnetic field. The negative potential peak is formed in the sheath region near the PG surface for the case of strong surface production of negative ions or low temperature negative ions. As the increase rate of the magnetic field near the wall becomes large, the negative potential peak becomes small.

This paper discusses the idea that the industry can have a differentiator of program quality by encouraging the activities of the Broadcasting Ethics ＆ Program Improvement Organization （BPO） in Japan. The BPO, a worldwide independent organization, has a mission of a breakwater against state power, and thus can be regarded as a kind of media accountability system, as proposed by Claude-Jean Bertrand. We review some controversial affairs in the TV industry and discuss BPO＇s activities aimed preventing ＂yellow journalism＂ and improving the quality of programming. High-quality content may be a differentiator for viewers faced with a choice of media, and thus, we focus on BPO and its role as a differentiator of the Japanese TV industry among the other, especially, Internet media. We also propose four ideas in response of critiques of BPO. Those are to strengthen transparency of governance of BPO, to improve the conformity of the TV industry to BPO＇s assessments of it, to establish a new committee to examine the whole concept of journalism, and to introduce a new certification institution to guarantee quality.

Heart failure (HF) is known to be associated with sleep-disordered breathing(SDB). In addition to disturbing patients’ sleep, SDB is also associated with a deterioration in the cardiac function and an increased mortality and *** sleep apnea (CSA), typically characterized by Cheyne-Stokes breathing(CSB), is increasingly found in patients with HF compared to the general population. An important pathogenetic factor of CSA seen in HF patients is an instability in the control of the respiratory system, characterized by both hypocapnia and increased chemosensitivity. Sympathetic overactivation,pulmonary congestion and increased chemosensitivity associated with HF stimulate the pulmonary vagal irritant receptor, resulting in chronic hyperventilation and hypocapnia. Additionally, the repetitive apnea and arousal cycles induce cyclic sympathetic activation, which may worsen the cardiac prognosis. Correcting CSB may improve both patient’s quality of life and HF syndrome itself. However, a treatment for HF in patients also experiencing CSA is yet to be found. In fact, conflicting results from numerous clinical studies investigating sleep apnea with HF guide to a troubling question, that is whether(or not) sleep apnea should be treated in patients with HF? This editorial attempts to both collect the current evidence about randomized control trials investigating CSA in patients with HF and highlight the effect of specific CSA treatments on cardiovascular endpoints.

Detection of Photoacoustic Signals from Blood in Dental Pulp

Photoacoustic waves from hemoglobin solutions in dental roots are detected by using a 1064-nm laser and an ultrasonic soft probe based on a composite transducer on the tooth surface. The high-frequency ultrasonic waves are detected from a tooth with a hemoglobin solution in the pulp cavity due to the large heat transfer coefficient and absorption coefficient of hemoglobin. The spectral intensities of frequency components higher than 1 MHz show good correlation with the hemoglobin solution concentrations, and maps of frequency spectra calculated by taking short-time Fourier transforms clearly exhibit the effect of absorbance in dental pulp.

Exploring the Lives of Mothers Raising Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Japan

Background: Examining the lives that mothers experience and build will allow us to deepen our understanding of children with ASD and their mothers and facilitate developing support methods. The study aimed to examine the lives of mothers raising children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and investigate their sources of support. Method: We conducted a qualitative inductive study using semi-structured interviews to identify characteristics of the lives that mothers have created. Results: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 mothers having children with ASD. The analysis comprised three stages of coding and yielded eight categories. The lives of these mothers contained three themes: preoccupation with parenting children with ASD and their siblings;evolving mother;and using social resources. Mothers engaged in “assessing the characteristics, growth, and changes in the child with ASD”, had a “preoccupation with parenting children with ASD”, and were “thinking about the future of the child with ASD”, and “having goals and plans for parenting” while having “consideration toward the child’s siblings”. During this process, mothers experienced “changes in perspective or approach” and created lifestyles while “receiving help from people around them” and engaged in the “use of social resources”. Conclusions: To avoid becoming preoccupied with parenting and being burdened by their lifestyle, mothers require social support to monitor their perceptions. Furthermore, the utilization of social resources requires the supporting individuals to understand the characteristics of children with ASD, provide appropriate information, and assist in decision-making.

Impact of Smoking on Lifestyle and Vitality in College Students

There is a long history of studies on the bad influence of smoking on our bodies, with many study results accumulated to date indicating a decline in the smoking rate. However, the smoking rate in Japan is still higher than that in other countries. In order to reveal the various influences due to smoking, we examined the changes in lifestyle and vitality prior to and the following smoking, targeting college students who are at the early age of starting to smoke. The subjects were 213 college students (83 men and 130 women). Smoking frequency as well as sleeping, eating habits, exercise, and vitality as a lifestyle were surveyed through a questionnaire survey. As a result of comparing smoking and lifestyle between the smoking group and non-smoking group, in terms of sleep, the bedtime and wake-up time tended to be late in the smoking group. Regarding eating habits, there was a tendency for the smoking group to have a high rate of skipping breakfast and a high intake rate of midnight snacks. Regarding exercise, the number of people exercising on a daily basis was small in both the smoking group and the non-smoking group, with no significant difference observed. Therefore, this study revealed that smoking has a negative influence on some aspects of lifestyle. There was no significant relationship in terms of the effects of smoking on vitality. Going forward, it will be necessary to clarify the negative effects of smoking on mental health.

CO₂ Capture at Room Temperature and Ambient Pressure: Isomer Effect in Room Temperature Ionic Liquid/Propanol Solutions

A CO2 capture system without supercritical CO2 was optimized for mixtures of hydrophobic room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) and propanol. We tested RTILs using bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, TFSI-, anion and four quaternary ammonium cations, two quaternary phosphonium cations, and one imidazolium cation. The addition of 2-propanol into the RTILs clearly promoted the capture of normal CO2(nCO2) at ambient temperature and pressure. When combined with 2-propanol, the most efficient RTILs for nCO2 capture were N-butyl-N,N,N-trimethylammonium TFSI-. This enhancement of nCO2 capture was not observed in RTIL mixtures with 1-propanol or in propanol mixtures containing other phosphonium- and imidazolium-based RTILs. The torsion angle of TFSI-, which was calculated using density functional theory, is thought to be related to high nCO2 capture efficiently.

Oxone-Mediated Preparation of Ester Derivatives Using Indium(III) Triflate and Various Alcohols

Esters are known as one of the most fundamental chemical moieties and also essentially useful components, especially for medicinal agents. Herein, using benzaldehyde and its derivatives as starting materials, Oxone-mediated preparation of ester derivatives in the presence of a catalytic amount of indium(III) triflate is described. Alcohols with various chain lengths, which functioned as solvents and substrates, were examined. Overall, the oxidative esterification starting with benzaldehyde derivatives possessing electron withdrawing groups proceeded smoothly and gave sufficient yields, in comparison to the reactions with the derivatives having electron donating groups.
